patch for axis.POSIXct (related to timezones)
I am finding that axis.POSIXct uses the local timezone for deciding where to
put tic marks, even if the data being plotted are in another time zone. The
solution is to use attr() to copy from the 'x' (provided as an argument) to
the 'z' (used for the 'at' locations).
I have pasted my proposed solution in section 1 below (as a diff). Then, in
section 2, I'll put some

Strange behavior with time-series x-axis
I recently called plot(x,y) where x was an array of POSIXct timestamps,
and was pleasantly surprised that it produced a nice plot right out of
the box:
z <- as.POSIXct(c("2006-10-26 08:00:00 EDT","2007-10-25 12:00:00 EDT"))
x <- seq(z[1],z[2],len=100)
y <- 1:100
plot(x,y,type="l")
The X axis had nice labels, one tick mark every other month. (Plotting

Problems with addition in big POSIX dates
Have you noticed any problems with big dates (>=1/1/2040) in R?

I() fails on objects of class POSIXct (PR#1587)
Although the documentation is somewhat sketchy, I() can be used to create
objects of class AsIs:

What determines the unit of POSIXct differences?
Dear All,
what determines if a difference between POSIXct objects gets
expressed in days or seconds?
In the following example, it's sometimes seconds, sometimes days.
as.POSIXct('2009-09-01') - as.POSIXct(NA)
Time difference of NA secs
c(as.POSIXct('2009-09-01'), as.POSIXct(NA)) -

proposed change to [.POSIXct
R developers,
The "tzone" attribute is stripped from a POSIXct object when the subscript
command is called ("[.POISXct"). This results in dates being printed in the
locale specific format after a subscript operation is applied to a POSIXct
object which has cause several problems for me in the past.
Here is an example of this problem under R 1.9.1:

Wishlist: more flexible handling of tick labels in axis.Date (PR#7913)
Full_Name: Gavin Simpson
Version: 2.1.0-patched (1-Jun-2005)
OS: Linux (Fedora Core 3)
Submission from: (NULL) (128.40.32.76)
axis.Date() insists on labelling tick marks. It could be made more flexible by
allowing the user to specify if they want the ticks to be labelled, for example,
to add un-labelled minor ticks for "months", added to a plot with "years"
labelled. The user

ISOdate/ISOdatetime performance suggestions, other date/time questions
Dear list:
working with date/times I have come across a problem that ISOdate and
ISOdatetime are too slow on large vectors of data. I was surprised just
until I looked at the implementation and the man page: "ISOdatetime and
ISOdate are convenience wrappers for strptime". In other terms, they
convert data to character representation first in order to create a
POSIXlt object that is then

timezone tests and R-devel
The return value of Sys.time() today with a timezone of US/Eastern is
unchanged between 4.0.3-patched and devel, but on devel the following test
fails
all.equal(x, as.POSIXlt(x))
with
x = Sys.time()
This means that devel does not complete make tests (failure on
tests/reg-tests-2.R)
It is entirely possible that it is an error on my end, I use
export TZ="US/Eastern"

creating POSIXct dates in C
I'm trying to generate POSIXct times in a call to a C function.
However, I'm having trouble generating times with the proper offset from
UTC.
Can anyone offer any help with this issue?
I've looked at R-2.0.1/src/main/datetime.c, but I was not able to find
an example that I could easily pull from that file.
Thanks in advance,
Whit

POSIXct time zone and daylight savings issues

Suppose we need a function that takes a POSIXct object and need to
calculate the time difference between it and GMT time:
gmtDiff <- function(time) {
time.gmt <- as.POSIXct(format(time, tz="GMT"))
time.plt <- as.POSIXlt(time)
dlstime <- ifelse(time.plt$isdst > 0, 1, 0)
timezone <- as.numeric(difftime(time, time.gmt, units="hours"))

Error: Cannot Coerce POSIXt to POSIXct when building package
A newbie here - please forgive me if this is a basic question. We have an
in house package built in R 2.2.1 (yes we're a little behind the times at
our firm)and would like to rebuild it using R 2.5.1. However, when I try
and build the package from source, I keep getting this error:
