str() with attr(*, "names") is extremely slow for long vectors
Hi,
I noticed some time ago that, for instance, named vectors that are
really makes str() really slow when displaying the names attribute. I
don't know exactly when this started, but it wasn't the case say 1-2
years ago. Example (on a WinXP 1.8GHz):
> s <- 1:1000; names(s) <- s
> system.time(str(s))

Round a line
R-help,
I have lloked in the archives found no answer to how to round the line
joint.
I have usedthe arguments lnd, ljoin in par but I get no differences in
the plotting.
x=1:10
par(ljoin="round",lend="round")
plot(x,sin(x),type="l",lwd=2)
Any suggestions?

Controlling line-join style in Lattice

I am creating a series of scatterplots with Lattice's xyplot(). Some of the plotting symbols are squares with thick borders. Cannot rescale a constant/zero column error.
I am trying to run the R Script below, I have actually simplified it to just
this part that is causing issues. When I run this script I continue to get
an error that says "cannot rescale a constant/zero column to a unit
variance". I cannot figure out what is going on here. I have stripped down
my data file so it is more manageable so I can try to figure this out.

Problem with xtable- rescaling a table
Dear R users,
I am new to Latex and I am using the R package xtable to generate tables.
I want to produce a table that is very long. in the landscape format, but
I would need to rescale the table so that it fits in the page. xtable

I recommend instead of no border, that you use a border with the same
color as the fill.
I do this in the likert functions in the HH package.

Rescaling a column in a matrix based on a certain rows
Hi,
Let say I have this matrix:
> mat<-matrix(cbind(rnorm(20),rnorm(20)), ncol = 2)
And I want to rescale values of column [,1] and [,2] using values from row 1
to 5, such that the values of row 1:5 should be rescale to the same
amplitude (kinda like take the z-score of population from row 1:5). column 1
and 2 are two different samples need to be compared.

Dear R-users,
I want to draw a barplot with beside=TRUE.
One halve of the bars are drawn with a border, while the other halve are drawn without a border (i.e. filled bars vs. non-filled bars next to each other).
Because borders are drawn around the bars, doing this leads to one halve of the bars being wider than the other halve, expanding across the 0-point of the y-axis.

Rescaling columns in a multi-plot layout
Dear all,
I am trying to create a 6-plot layout - 3 rows and 2 columns - so that
only the top two plots have variable widths, all else with their default
setting. Using
"layout(matrix(c(1,2,3,4,5,6),3,2,byrow=T),widths=c(5,2))" rescales
column #2 of all three rows, whereas I would like to rescale that of
only row #1. Is there a simple way of doing this?

If these things bother you, could you please supply fixes? For some reason
you omitted the part of the help page dealing with one of these (which is
as documented), and I also think you are confusing `plot' and `device'
sizes. The latter will be the displayed device surface, I believe.
Nothing on the help page suggested that the fine details of the R read-only

how to rescale the limits of yaxis rather than using the data range by default?
Dear Lister,
plot() is using the data range as the default limits of yaxis. Is
there any way I can change the limits? I just look at the help of
plot() and par() and couldn't find answers.

Part 1) is basically that the initial rescaling is done if the window is
too large to fit on the screen. That's true and obvious (no scrollbars)
and intentional and on the help page. As ever, you need to report bugs on
what is documented, not what you would like.
This will be changed for 1.2.1, but was several hours' work. I have also
cleaned up the scrollbar behaviour.

calculate quantiles of a custom function
Hi,
I guess that my problem has an obvious answer, but I have not been able to
find it.
Suppose I create a custom function, consisting of two beta-distributions:
myfunction <- function(x) {
dbeta(x,2,6) + dbeta(x,6,2)
}
How can I calculate the quantiles of myfunction?
