Inaccuracy in svd() with R ubuntu package
On two laptops running 32-bit kubuntu, I have found that svd(), invoked
within R 2.9.1 as supplied with the current ubuntu package, returns very
incorrect results when presented with complex-valued input. One of the
laptops is a Dell D620, the other a MacBook Pro. I've also verified the
problem on a 32-bit desktop. On these same systems, R compiled from
source provides apparently

solve the quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c=0
If I have matrics as follows:
> a <- c(1,1,0,0)
> b <- c(4,4,0,0)
> c <- c(3,5,5,6)
How can I use R code to solve the equation ax^2+bx+c=0.
thanks!

factor conversion to date/time
Hi, I've been trying to convert numbers from an online temperature database
into dates and time that R recognizes. I've tried as.Date, as.POSIXlt and strptime the problem is that the database has put a T between the numbers and R will not accept any conversions. currently it sees the date as a factor with the format as 1981-01-02T08:00I would like to keep only the year and month, but my

function 'eigen' (PR#8503)
Full_Name: Pierre Legendre
Version: 2.1.1
OS: Mac OSX 10.4.3
Submission from: (NULL) (132.204.120.81)
I am reporting the mis-behaviour of the function 'eigen' in 'base', for the
following input matrix:
A <- matrix(c(2,3,4,-1,3,1,1,-2,0),3,3)
eigen(A)
I obtain the following results, which are incorrect for eigenvalues and
eigenvectors 2 and 3 (incorrect imaginary portions):

A limitation for polyroot ? (PR#880)
Dear R Development Team,
I have encountered the following difficulty in using the function polyroot
under either NT4.0 (R version 1.2.1) or linux (R version 0.90.1). In the
provided example, the non-zero root of c(0,0,0,1) depends on the results of
the previous call of polyroot.

bug in qr.coef() and (therefore) in qr.solve (PR#8476)
[I thought I'd submitted this bug report some time ago, but it's never showed up on the bug tracking system, so I'm submitting again.]
qr.solve() gives incorrect results when dealing with complex matrices or with qr objects that have been computed with LAPACK=TRUE, whenever the b argument has more than one column. This bug flows from qr.coef(), which has a similar problem. I believe

print(big+small*1i) -> big + 0i
Should both parts of a complex number be printed
to the same precision? The imaginary part of 0
looks a bit odd when log10(real/imag) >=~ getOption("digits"),
but I'm not sure it is awful. Some people might
expect the same number of significant digits in the
two parts.

[LLVMdev] [BUG] Incorrect ASCII escape characters on Mac
Hi,
The bug originated when one of our tests failed with an
answer-mismatch on Mac, after upgrading to XCode 6.2. The internal IR
after all our transforms, and just before it hits the final LLVM
lowering is identical on Mac and Linux:
var t6 : int8_T{col}[10] = {34, -48, 18, -12, 33, 0, 21, -7, -20, -31};
The LLVM lowering itself doesn't try to do anything smart. When we

one way to solve bad looking density plots in postscript
Hi,
When R generates density plots and these are exported to postscript(
a=matrix(1:100,10,10);image(a,col=rainbow(100);dev.copy2eps(file="image.eps")
)
The result often looks bad when rendered on screen. The help page states that this is because programs use anti-aliasing. That seems to be true - turning off anti-aliasing for gs (-dGraphicsAlphaBits=1) of in OSX's preview makes

[LLVMdev] LLVM 3.0rc3 Testing Beginning
Good day, LLVMers!
We are starting on our third (and hopefully last) round of testing for LLVM 3.0. Please visit:
http://llvm.org/pre-releases/3.0/rc3/
for the sources. There are also binaries for Darwin up there, with more to come during the week. Please build this release candidate, test it out on your projects, and let us know if you find any regressions from the 2.9 release.
Please keep

Security hole in mgetty+sendfax
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hi,
a security hole has been found in the auxiliary fax scripts "faxq" and
"faxrunq" in the mgetty+sendfax package. It has been in there since
the first day those scripts were written.
Due to improper quoting in these shell scripts, it''s possible to execute
code with a foreign user id, and get root access to the machine. The

I am also using winbind.
Everything works correctly except that (suddenly, as of a few days ago)
newly created printers display the "Unable to display security
information" on the security tab of the printer properties. This
happened suddenly with no changes made to the samba server. Only samba

keep color range constant across three persp() graphs
Hi All.
I have created two, 3-D, color graphs using persp(). Z values range from 1
to 100 on the first plot, and 0.5 to 50 on the second plot.
I would like to keep the color range constant between the two graphs, rather
than each graph showing the full range of colors.
So the first graph should go from yellow to red and the second graph should
go from yellow to orange.
Below I present a

Frequency ploygon help
I can't figure out how to get the x-axis to contain the category lables for
my frequency polygon. I'm also not sure if there is a more elegant
approach. Any insights on the labels?
I tried this:
#generate some pseudo data
x=c(sort(sample(1:1500,5)),sort(sample(1:1500,3),dec=T))
# assign names to the vector

solving cubic/quartic equations non-iteratively -- comparisons
Hi,
I'm responding to a post about finding roots of a cubic or quartic equation non-iteratively. One obviously could create functions using the explicit algebraic solutions. One post on the subject noted that the square-roots in those solutions also require iteration, and one post claimed iterative solutions are more accurate than the explicit solutions.
This post, however, is about

Winbind traffic not encrypted
A problem here getting winbind traffic to be encrypted using Kerberos.
I have set up a test environment with a pair of servers (actually lxc
containers):
- samba server (ubuntu 16.04, stock samba 4.3.11)
- client machine (ubuntu 16.04) joined with "net ads join" and winbind
The client machine has the following in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
