SPSS and R – do they like each other?
Hi, I wonder how well SPSS and R communicate, because I need SPSS but would like to do some data manipulations in R. However I am very afraid of never ending import-export-complications ? especially with all those labels and extra information my SPSS files contain. My data come from SPSS and have to be exported to SPSS again (because I need to produce special output tables, which would be hard to

R vs SPSS
Dear all, in last weeks you discussed about R vs SAS. I want to ask your opinion about a comparison between R and SPSS. I don't know this software, but some weeks ago I went to a presentation of this product. I found it really user-friendly with GUI (even if I'd prefer command line) and very usefull and simple to use in creation and managing tables, OLAP tecniques, pivot table. What you

read.spss: variable.labels
Hi, how can I attach variable labels originally read by read.spss() to the resulting variables? <pre> X <- read.spss('data.sav', use.value.labels = TRUE, to.data.frame = TRUE, trim.factor.names = TRUE, trim_values = TRUE, reencode = "UTF-8") names(X) <- tolower(names(X)) attach(X) </pre> Thank you S?ren

How good is R at making publication quality tables?
Hello Everyone,   I have just started learning R and am in the process of figuring out what it can and can't do. I must say I am very impressed with R so far and am amazed that something this good can actually be free.   Recently, I finished reading R for SAS and SPSS Users and have begun reading SAS and R and Data Manipulation with R. Based on what I've read in these books and elsewhere,

Table of basic descriptive statistics like SPSS
Dear list readers, I want to: 1. Get a table of basic descriptive statistics for my variables with the variable names one below the other like SPSS descriptive statistics: Varname N Min Max Mean SD xxxx x x x x x xxx x x x x x .... 2. Delete some variables from a data frame or exclude variables from beeing analyzed. 3. Create a text file / redirect the terminal output to a

Inefficiency of SAS Programming
If anyone wants to see a prime example of how inefficient it is to program in SAS, take a look at the SAS programs provided by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for risk adjusting and reporting for hospital outcomes at http://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/software.htm . The PSSASP3.SAS program is a prime example. Look at how you do a vector product in the SAS macro

Test of Parallel Regression Assumption in R
Hi, I am running an analysis with an ordinal outcome and I need to run a test of the parallel regression assumption to determine if ordinal logistic regression is appropriate. I cannot find a function to conduct such a test. >From searching various message boards I have seen a few useRs ask this same question without a definitive answer - and I came across a thread that indicated there is no

Dates in read.spss
I am using read.spss in the foreign package to read an SPSS save file. For date variables I get huge values such as 11489990400. Does anyone know how to convert these values to R POSIXct date objects? Thanks in advance -Frank platform i686-pc-linux-gnu arch i686 os linux-gnu system i686, linux-gnu status major 1 minor

Stepwise regression and PLS
Dear all, I am a newcomer to R. I intend to using R to do stepwise regression and PLS with a data set (a 55x20 matrix, with one dependent and 19 independent variable). Based on the same data set, I have done the same work using SPSS and SAS. However, there is much difference between the results obtained by R and SPSS or SAS. In the case of stepwise, SPSS gave out a model with 4 independent

FW: logistic regression
Sorry. Let me try again then. I am trying to find "significant" predictors" from a list of about 44 independent variables. So I started with all 44 variables and ran drop1(sep22lr, test="Chisq")... and then dropped the highest p value from the run. Then I reran the drop1. Wishlist: merge and subset to keep attributes (PR#8658)
Full_Name: Ulrike Gr?mping Version: 2.2.1 OS: Windows Submission from: (NULL) (84.190.139.94) When importing data from SPSS, it is a nice feature of the package foreign that it allows (option use.value.labels=F) to work with the original SPSS codes while keeping the value labels as information in an attribute. Unfortunately, after merging or subsetting, these attributes disappear. The code

Use of R in clinical trials
Dear all, There have been a variety of discussions on the R list regarding the use of R in clinical trials. The following post from the STATA list provides an interesting opinion regarding why SAS remains so popular in this arena: http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2008-01/msg00098.html Regards, -Cody Hamilton

Help with Latex (Hmisc)
Dear R Users, I have three questions. 1) Is there a way to get the output tex file to include \documentclass{report} \begin{document} and \end{document} so I can generate a PDF straight away. (I am trying to generate hundreds of these and don't want to have to manually type this in every time I load a tex file). 2) When I have have a table of greater than 9 columns, the columns to

Which JAGS interface to use?
Frank (or anyone else), can you offer any comments comparing runjags, R2jags, rjags ? I couldn't find any vignettes, nothing except a brief mention on Task Views. Adding per-panel text to panel strips in lattice xyplot
I would like to add auxiliary information to the bottom of two strips on each panel that comes from a table look-up using the values of two variables that define the panel. For example I might panel on sex and race, showing 3 randomly chosen time series in each panel and want to add (n=100) in the bottom strip to indicate the 3 curves were sampled from 100. Is there a not-too-hard way to do

R-question
Hello Colleagues, I programmed in SAS for 3 years and would like to switch to a not so costly software product. Hence I started to evaluate R, and my first test look promising. However I have some question: 1. Is it possible to query R files by SQL internally on data frames (not on a database) and how is the syntax (I have the RODBC package installed). I would like to extract year, Quarter,

/usr/lib/R/library vs /usr/local/lib/R/site-library
I would appreciate getting a clarification of /usr/lib/R/library vs /usr/local/lib/R/site-library. I am running R 1.8 on Debian Linux. On one occasion doing update.packages() resulted in versions of one or more libraries being placed in one of these directories without removing the old version, and the old version took precedence over the new. I'm sorry I did not save the steps I used. I

Sweave template
Dear Group, I have made significant improvements to our Sweave template, have made the template self-contained (i.e., you can run it yourself and it will find the datasets it needs), and have included the output pdf file. This is at http://biostat.mc.vanderbilt.edu/SweaveTemplate . You will see in the pdf file the enhancements in how R code is pretty-printed, and I have added an example
