abbreviate or wrap dimname labels
For a variety of displays (mosaicplots, barplots, ...) one often wants to either abbreviate or wrap long labels, particularly when these are made up of several words. In general, it would be nice to have a function, abbreviate.or.wrap <- function(x, maxlength=10, maxlines=2, split=" ") { } that would take a character vector or a list of vectors, x, and try to abbreviate or wrap

Dropping unused levels of a factor that has "NA" as a level
Is this a bug? > f1 <- factor(c("a", NA), levels = c("a", "NA") ) > f2 <- f1[, drop = TRUE] > f2 [1] a <NA> Levels: a <NA> I would have expected f2 to have only one level, "a". It seems to me that the code in [.factor does not follow the advice in help("factor") on how to set factor codes to be

help combining mtext and strwrap?
Hi all, I've got some image plots on which I'd like to include some gene information (in the margins using mtext). Unfortunately, the description is rather long and will need to be wrapped to fit on several lines. From what I know about mtext, it's really only meant for single-line labels, not paragraphs. Here's some sample code of the idea I'm trying to accomplish:

Suggested Patch: Adding commas to list of packages after R CMD check
Dear R-devs, Scenario: When checking a package via `R CMD check package_tar.ball`, required / suggested packages may be missing. R subsequently returns a list of packages that are missing (delimited by spaces). Example: ``` R CMD check glmSparseNet_0.99.13.tar.gz * using log directory '/home/ubuntu/Bioconductor/glmSparseNet.Rcheck' * using R Under development (unstable) (2018-06-06

How to wrap or split labels on plot
Dear R gurus, I want to wrap labels that are too long for a plot. I have looked at strsplit(), substr(), nchar(), and strwrap(). I think it's some combination but I'm having difficulty trying to figure out the right combo. I think I need to create some new matrix containing the labels already split, though I'm not sure if maybe there is a quick and dirty way to address this

A version using regular expressions, regexpr() and substr() functions is attached. Finally everything is packed into splitSeq() function (chunk 14 in the attached file) Seq<- "GCCTCGATAGCTCAGTTGGGAGAGCGTACGACTGAAGATCGTAAGGtCACCAGTTCGATCCTGGTTCGGGGCA" Str<-

sprintf("%d", integer(0)) aborts
In R's sprintf() if any of the arguments has length 0 the function aborts. E.g., > sprintf("%d", integer(0)) Error in sprintf("%d", integer(0)) : zero-length argument > sprintf(character(), integer(0)) Error in sprintf(character(), integer(0)) : 'fmt' is not a non-empty character vector This comes up in code like x[nchar(x)==0] <-

Re: [R} stars graphs
I thought about that star graph again, and realized that it would be quite a handy thing for visualizing cyclic data like time or compass direction. Here is a cleaned up (and renamed) version to do a polar plot that starts at the right and goes counterclockwise or a 24 hour clock plot that starts at the top and goes clockwise. There are probably other varieties that would be interesting. Jim

Use of hosking.sim R function
Dear all: My experience in using hosking.sim to generate random time series is that it requires an n-length autocorrelation function (ACF; order 0 to n-1) to generate n-length random vectors. I have attempted to utilize shorter than n-length (i.e. truncated) ACF's with hosking.sim to generate n-length random vectors, but the function will not operate for n-length time series without the

Nested objects not propagating from view
I thought I had this fixed, but apparently not. It works okay from the console, but not from the view. I have the following: # partial schema create_table "users", :force => true do |t| t.string "login", :null => false t.string "first_name" t.string "last_name" t.string "email", :null => false

Problem with spacing
I''m having the devil''s time trying to get things laid out correctly. I''ve attached a screenshot so that you can get an idea of what I''m seeing. I''ve got a very unattractive space under the two combo boxes, and another one under the buttons. I don''t understand how to reduce this. I know it''s impossible to guess what idiocy I might have

how to assign "writeLines" function
hi, what I want to do is assigning following code to any object. k<-paste("thank") writeLines(strwrap(k, width = 80,indent = 7,exdent = 6)) To assign the "writeLines" code, I try this a<-writeLines(strwrap(k, width = 80,indent = 7,exdent = 6)) or assign(a,writeLines(strwrap(k, width = 80,indent = 7,exdent = 6))) but it doesn't work. is there any way to solve

str(..., strict.width="wrap") changes alignment of colons
Hi, This was surprising to me and does not appear to be documented in ?str. After reading ?strwrap, I see that the problem is that "Whitespace ... in the input is destroyed". However, I thought I'd mention it because I'm not sure it is intended behavior for str(). I have a list, and the names of the list have a variable number of characters. > x <- list(A=1:10,

Installing packages
Hello, I have upgraded from Mandrake Linux 8.0 to Mandrake 8.1 and try to reinstall my favourite R... Everything is OK for the base software but I have trouble to get some packages installed. Specifically, for some packages, a "collect2" binary seems to be necessary during the compilation/linking process of the library, and LD complains about not finding it : Installing source

Problems with the Speex Jitter Buffer
(Sorry about the delay -- currently attending ICASSP) Hi, Haven't looked at all the details, but what's clearly wrong is that you need to put the *compressed* packets in the jitter buffer and decode them only when you _get() them. documentation fixes (cvs) (PR#5632)
The patch below attempts to correct some unclear sentences in the R documentation. In the case of coplot.Rd it wasn't clear whether "shingle" bar had a special meaning or was a typo for "single". I've just put a comment in that case. regards -- Brian Gough Network Theory Ltd -- Publishing Free Software Manuals 15 Royal Park Bristol BS8 3AL United Kingdom Tel: +44
