Passing character strings from C code to R
Hi,
I have a C code which produces array of integers and potentially a string,
and I have problems passing the string out. Here is the relevant part of the
code:
1 PROTECT(Ret = allocVector(INTSXP, n));
2 ret = (int*) INTEGER(Ret); /* get pointer to R's Ret */
3 for(i=0; i<n; i++) ret[i] = data[i];
4 Free(data);
5 i=1;

using C code to create data frame but always return as list
there is my code, expect return value is a data frame but R say it is list:
SEXP Julia_R_MD_NA_DataFrame(jl_value_t* Var)
{
SEXP ans,names,rownames;
char evalcmd[4096];
int i;
const char* dfname="DataFrameName0tmp";
jl_set_global(jl_main_module, jl_symbol(dfname), (jl_value_t*)Var);
//Get Frame cols
sprintf(evalcmd,"size(%s,2)",dfname);

R_alloc with more than 2GB (PR#7721)
Full_Name: Wolfgang Huber
Version: R-devel_2005-03-10
OS: alphaev68-dec-osf4.0f
Submission from: (NULL) (62.253.128.15)
This report concerns allocation of large (>2^31 byte) chunks of memory with
R_alloc. I suspect it is a bug/typo but please don't hate me if it's actually a
feature:
In R, I can happily create large matrices:
> a= matrix(0, nrow=191481, ncol=3063)
> dim(a)

Safe to UNPROTECT() when object is assigned to a list?
Hi,
I'm troubleshooting some native code on Windows that very occationally
(and semi-randomly) crashes R. Already looked at "everything", I just
want to double check that it is safe to UNPROTECT() allocated
variables as soon as they are assigned to, say, a PROTECTed list.

getAttrib() and setAttrib()
Hello:
I am looking at "Writing R Extensions", subsection 3.6.4, using R 1.1.0,
under NT4.0, with VC++ 6.0. Under these conditions I can use the first
method given for coding the out() function, but not the second, which uses
getAttrib() and setAttrib(). I hope that someone will tell me how this
second method can also be made to work. Details follow, for anyone kind
enough to help.

.Call - applying setAttrib(x, R_DimSymbol, s) to a matrix being an element of a list
Dear R developers,
I am writing some C code that loads multiple images into a list of R
matrices. The whole R object is created within the C code. To simplify
coding, elements of the list are first created as vectors and then
converted to corresponding matrices using setAttrib(x, R_DimSymbol, s).
Generally the code works fine except for one detail. Applying setAttrib
sets ALL elements

Reading text files and readLine
Hi,
I am trying to write a function to read in a whole text file as a single
string ( so I can calculate its "sha1" hash function using package
"digest"). I need a single string containing the whole file, and so far I
was using paste(readLines(fileName), collapse = ""). Unfortunately this
function gives me warnings :

Unexpected error "subset assignment" (bug?)
Hi,
I run into following problem. It seems to me that operation in the 3rd line
should be valid.
> b = matrix(as.raw(0), 8,8)
> q = as.raw(1:8)
> b[1,] = q
Error: incompatible types in subset assignment
> length(b[1,])
[1] 8
> typeof(b[1,])
[1] "raw"
> length(q)
[1] 8
> typeof(q)
[1] "raw"
Is this a bug or a "feature"?

FYI: Problems while loading package "class (VR)"
Hi,
Today, I performed automatic updates of packages and somehow lost "class"
package. I loaded a library that depended on it and got:
Error: package 'class' could not be loaded
In addition: Warning message: there is no package called 'class' in:
library(pkg, character.only = TRUE, logical = TRUE, lib.loc = lib.loc)
I tried to load it by instal-package: class (VR) and

Casting in R
Hi,
I am looking for functions that would allow me to access raw binary data of
R vectors. One way would be to use:
x = (1:10)*pi
writeBin(x, "temp.bin")
r = readBin("temp.bin", "raw", n=length(x)*8)
Other to write my own C code. Is there any other simpler way?

Error list and debugging R code
Hi,
I am trying to debug my code and looking for any tool to help me out with
it. My main problem is with the error messages I can not figure out where
they come from (what function produced them) and what do they mean. Is there
such a think as list of error messages produced by R and standard R
packages, and what do they mean? Or any tool to extract information which
function produced the

Manipulating R lists in C
Hi,
I have been studying the R manual on lists but cannot seem to create a
simple R list in C - I keep on getting "'dimnames' applied to non-array"
whenever I attempt to assign names to the list elements:
Wanted output a list structure something like
[ type="Bid", price=2.0, volume=1000 ]
I can get up to a list of
[ "Bid2, 2.0, 1000 ]
But for the life of

not figure out how to fix it.
When creating my package (caMassClass) I get the

Splitting the string at the last sub-string
Hi,
I need to split a string into 2 strings, with the split point defined by the
last occurrence of some substring. I come up with some convoluted code to do
so:
str = "Chance favors the prepared mind"
sub = "e"
y = unlist(strsplit(str,sub))
z = cbind(paste(y[-length(y)], sub, sep="", collapse = ""), y[length(y)]);
y

Survey of "moving window" statistical functions - still looking f or fast mad function
Hi,
First, let me thank Jaroslaw for making this survey. I find it quite
illuminating.
Now the questions:
* the #1 solution below (based on cumsum) is numerically unstable.
Specifically if you do the runmean on a positive vector you can easily
get negative numbers due to rounding errors. Does anyone see a
modification which is free of this deficiency?
* is it possible to optimize the

Animation of Mandelbrot Set
Hi,
I was playing with Mandelbrot sets and come up with the following code, I
thought I would share:
library(fields) # for tim.colors
library(caTools) # for write.gif
m = 400 # grid size
C = complex( real=rep(seq(-1.8,0.6, length.out=m), each=m ),
imag=rep(seq(-1.2,1.2, length.out=m), m ) )
C = matrix(C,m,m)
Z = 0
X = array(0, c(m,m,20))
for (k in 1:20) {
Z =
