analytic solution for equation
Hello, I have search on R website but do not find any solution. I would like to know if R has some functionalities to produce analytical results of equation. or more generally if it contains some functions to simplify equation. For example: I would like to obtain x1 from: x1+x2=8 (x1=8-x2) x1^2+x2=8 (x1=sqrt(8-x2)) Is is possible in R ? if not, do you know a (free) software that could do the

New package Ryacas
Ryacas is an R interface to the free yacas computer algebra system. Ryacas allows one to send R expressions, unprocessed yacas strings and certain other R objects to a separate yacas process from R and get back the result. It also has facilities for manipulating yacas strings and R expressions destined for yacas processing. It can be used for exact arithmetic, symbolic math, ASCII pretty

computer algebra in R
Dear all, I'm currently working on converting mathematica code (https://github.com/ASDSE/thermosimfit/blob/master/Packages/thermoHD-Comp/thermoCacheHD-1Comp.m) to R. The code is related to solve algebraic systems. > eqthermo = {h0 == h + hd + hga, d0 == d + hd, ga0 == ga + hga, kga == > ???? hga / (h * ga), kd == hd / (h * d)}; > > (* IDA HD*) > sthdIDAcacheHD[fkd_, fkga_,

Package specific dependencies...
Hi, I noticed recently when installing the GDD package for R under GNU/Linux that it required the gd library (http://libgd.org/) for generating graphics. The resolution of this was to simply install the library on my system, and then GDD successfully installed without any complaints. However, the variant of GNU/Linux that I use is Gentoo, so I filed a bug requesting that a USE flag be set for

Translation Dictionary (Rosetta Stone)
Dear List: A while back I found a web site called the Rosetta Stone for Computer Algebra Systems showing how to do similar operations in different symbolic programs. This has been very helpful for moving between Mathematica, Yacas and Maxima. I wonder if anyone maintains something akin to this for translating R to SAS, Minitab, Stata etc? I am familiar with the various (useful) reference

Roots of quadratic system.
Hello, I have a system of quadratic equations (results of a Hamiltonian optimization) which I need to find the roots for. Is there a package and/or function which will find the roots for a quadratic system? Note that I am not opimizing, but rather solving the first order conditions which come from a Hamiltonian. I am basically looking for something in R that will do the same thing as fsolve in

Symbolic Maximum Likelihood in R
Dear List: Is any one aware of a package that would extend the D() function and allow for one to maximize a likelihood function symbolically? Something akin to Solve[x==0, parameter] function in Mathematica? Clearly R has the capacity to _compute_ MLEs given a set of data. But, I'm looking for a package that would allow for me to define the likelihood function, find the 1st order partial

R in rearranging equations
Hi, can anyone tell me if R can be used to rearrange very complicated equations in terms of one of the variables? I have: dx/dt = a*b*m*y*(1-x)-r*x and, having set: dy/dx = 0, need to rearrange in terms of x. The problem I have is that I don't know how to rearrange equations when the variables are not yet defined (I get messages warning me that x etc can't be found). I'm not sure

symbolic and algebraic computation
I needed a symbolic and algebraic computation software. The best solution I've found so far is maxima computer algebra system. I was wondering if there is any R package that has similar features as maxima's or somebody could point me to reference manuals on how to use R for this purpose. Thanks, Angel

symbolic math
Hi all! Does anyone knows if it exists a "symbolic math" package in R, that allows to compute derivatives, integrals, etc.? Does exist a freeware version of Maple? Cheers, Marco [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Is there a facility in R similar to MatLab "syms" that allows using unevaluated numeric symbols in matrices?
Hi, I'm trying to use R to get eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix whose elements are of the form (2 * lambda), -(lambda + mu), etc. I'd like R to treat this matrix as a numeric matrix without treating lambda and mu as variable names but rather as some sort of atomic quantities (and hence give eigenvectors in terms of mu and/or lambda). MatLab and Mathematica both do this,

optimization problem in R ... can this be done?
Im trying to ascertain whether or not the facilities of R are sufficient for solving an optimization problem I've come accross. Because of my limited experience with R, I would greatly appreciate some feedback from more frequent users. The problem can be delineated as such: A utility function, we shall call g is a function of x, n ... g(x,n). g has the properties: n > 0, x lies on the

Question on Variables
Hi everyone, Im quite new to R an I have the following Question: I would like to define Variables which I can add and multiply etc. and that R can simplyfy the terms. The variables should stand for integers. For example I would like to have an entry in an array with variable z and if I add b+z the field should now contain 2z+b. Or if the field contains 1 and I add z
