I know that the group 'gc55_data2' will not exist on the Windows machine, but does it exist on the Linux Mint machine ? Rowland, There is no user gc55_data2, it is a

Linux Mint 19.1, Samba 4.7.6 & WIndows 10
Have a Linux Mint 19.1 with Samba 4.7.6 installed. Plan is to use this as a file server. Cannot connect from Windows 10. Win 10 sees the share but says group name could not be found. Everything worked on the previous Ubuntu machine. Any thoughts on where I should look? Tom Thomas Rieff GreenCare 1717 3rd Avenue Mankato, MN 56001

Permissions
Rowland, Thanks for the response. We are using win 7 on desktop pc's and Ubuntu 16.04 w/Samba. Do you have any sample config's for 'vfs_accl_xattr' for Windows. My issue may be more about file locking than permissions??? Connecting with Windows 10???
Samba Guru's, As a point of clarification in our Samba setup... We are currently running Samba 4.3.11 on Ubuntu Server 16.04. When running smbstatus it shows the following... Windows 7 machines connect showing SMB2_10. Windows 10 machines connect showing Unknown (0x0311). Supposedly Windows 10 machines should show SMB3_11. Curious if they are connecting correctly and/or if changes

File Permissions
I have been noticing an issue with file permissions and curious as to your thoughts on this. In the one directory the files started as... ...a 777 file was users[100] and root...now they are gc[1002] and fred_smith [1005], but the permissions changed to 764. I have a mask as 775, but this does not seem to be the case??? Here is my smb.conf...curious as to what I may have wrong on this???

Backup and restore for CentOS 5.5
Hi - I have a NFS/NIS server environment running CentOS 5.5 on a Dell Optiplex 240. I would like to back it up and then move it to a new machine. Couple of questions: 1. This is an older computer Dell Optiplex 240 that I am unable to connect a USB drive to. In the "linux rescue" environment fdisk -l shows only /dev/hda but lsusb shows the three partitions that are on the drive. I

SAMBA 1.9.18p10 problem
I have been using Samba 1.9.18p8 in a Solaris 2.6 machine for months but suddenly this week there is a problem. Nothing's changed. I have some persistent connection of my NTSP3 client to the samba share. When I login as usual, it fails to mount the drive. It either prompt for password but whatever password the samba rejects, or give a "Access is Denied" when you try to access the

Help with backups
I've got a Redhat 5 server running Samba, and two dualboot CentOS 5 workstations. Until we get a better backup strategy, I'm backing up the workstations to the server via mounting a shared samba drive to /mnt. Trying tar cvf /mnt/samba_share/backup.tar /* eventually yields backing up /mnt, which produces an unwanted loop, including /mnt/samba_share I looked at tar with --exclude /mnt
