Documenting different OO-aproaches in R as a package?
Hello, I see some people including myself confused by the different object-oriented approaches in R (S3, S4, OOP, R.oo etc.). Would it be ok to collect examples and solutions for the different OO-packages in one package and add a vignette for documentation? (assuming I find time for this task) I mean in this case the package would not add data or functionality to R or serve as a companion

save() size in XDR
Dear R-devel, Is there a way to find the size in bytes of a save() command --before-- the file has been saved? If not, can anyone point me to some resources on XDR so I can find a way to calculate it? C vs. C++ as learning and development tool for R
I have 3 years of experience with R and have an interest in becoming a better programmer so that I might someday be able to contribute packages. Other than R, my only experience was taking Lisp from Daniel Friedman in the 1970's. I would like to learn either C or C++ for several reasons: To gain a better concept of object oriented programming so that I can begin to use S4 methods in R. To

Object-oriented programming in R for Java programmers?
Hi, I was wondering if anybody might have a reference for me: My R code is growing and getting more and more confusing. Thus, I figure it's time to switch to object-oriented again. I have done oo programming in C++ and Java before but the first few tutorial on R oo were a bit confusing for me. Is there any brief tutorial on oo programming in R especially for people who have done oo in Java

OO programming & S3/S4 paradigm - General question
Hi, Being relatively new to OO programming and not so old on R, I noticed the possibility to do OO programming in R. But it seems there is two "paradigms" S3 that seems the old one but is the one used in the R.oo package and S4 which seems more recent As a starting point, which one is best to use? Is R.oo useful? what are the main difference between the two? Any feedback

From Java to R OOP
Hi, I'm new to OOP in R so please forgive the naiveness of some of the questions. Here are a couple of them. It would be great if you can contrast to OOP in Java. 1. R's S4 appears to centered around a dispatch mechanism which in my understanding is just a way to implement polymorphism. Now, here's the snag, I thought polymorphism was an aspect of OOP not by itself the definition of

Question re:S4 classes and design; clashing classes?
Thanks to Duncan's recent work on SJava, I've got a (so far) stable platform to put together the R-Orca interface (dynamic graphics, including brushing, subseting, etc). While the first version will be looking at installation issues and study basic user interfaces for providing a few working examples, it will be important for this particular package to look at how one integrates a

Object-oriented programming (OOP)
Hello everybody, please excuse my bad English. I am Alfredo Naime and I'm from to Venezuela. I want to make a lib with tools for simulation (queues, inventories, factory, etc.) using object-oriented programming (OOP). You have any manuals on the handling of data types, classes, inheritance, etc. in R with examples and how to make a R lib. Thank you, very much. Alfredo

S4 Objects [Sec=Unclassified]
I am new to R programming but have dived into a medium sized modelling software development project. Having come from a Java OO background I have a couple of questions about S4 objects. Is there a way to make S4 slots (and methods) private and hence force the use of accessor methods? Is there a straight-forward way to implement pass-by-reference for method parameters? I am currently

S4 vs Reference Classes
Hi, I'm looking for some guidance on whether to use S4 or Reference Classes for an analysis application I'm developing. I'm a C++/Python developer, and like to 'think' in OOD. I started my app with S4, thinking that was the best set of OO features in R. However, it appears that one needs Reference Classes to allow object methods to assign values (other than

S/R programming books
Hi, I have been using R for a few months now and I am confident that the language has everything I will need to complete my PhD. I can create functions, script files and packages, but I would like to write my programs more efficiently (maybe using OO). Can anyone recommend a good book on the "art" of good R programming? Kind Regards, Sam.

V2.9.0 changes [Sec=Unclassified]
Hi all, Prefix: I am a frustrated Java coder in R. I am coding a medium sized ecosystem modelling program in R. I have changed to using S4 objects and it has cost me an order of magnitude in execution speed over the functional model. I cannot afford this penalty and have found that it is the result of all the passing-by-value of objects. I see that you can now safely inherit from

S4 tutorial
I'm looking for some tutorial on S4. I only find the following one, which is not in English. Can somebody let me know if there is any introductory material? I'm very familiar with OO and C++. If there is some material that suits my background, it will be great. https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2009-January/184108.html

S4 pass-by-value work-around?
Howdy all, I have a problem that I'd like some advice/help in solving---it has to do with R's pass-by-value system. I understand the issue, but am wondering if anyone has found a working solution in dealing with it for cases when one wants to modify an object inside of a method, specifically when working with S4. I'm aware that R.oo is able to deal with this using S3, but I'd

So far, I've decided to use the "cairoDevice", "RGtk2", "gWidgets", and "gWidgetsRGtk2" packages to develop the GUI. I am trying to decide what would be the best way to structure the GUI would be. Oriented object programming
Hi all Two questions: - I would like to learn more on oriented object programming with R. Is there any tutorial for that? - Without waking up a troll, I am not very familiar with diffusion list, I am more use to forum. On a diffusion list, how can I check if someone already asks a question? I mean, I went on CRAN-R website, I find the R mailing list archive. But is there a way to search
