news file included in source but not binary package
Dear R-devel,
I've noticed that when I place a `NEWS' file in the top-level directory for
a package, then do R CMD build mypkg, the file gets included in the .tar.gz
file. However, if I do R CMD build --binary mypkg, the `NEWS' file does not
get included in the .zip file. Is this intentional? Is there a way I can
get such a file included in the pre-compiled package automatically?

.Rprofile, date tagging history, loading packages
Dear R-Helpers,
I'm fiddling with my .Rprofile in Windows XP & R 2.7.0 Beta. I prefer to
manually save my workspace but automatically save my command history via
the .Rprofile. That is working fine once I found that "utils::" was
required before the loadhistory & savehistory functions. What I would
like to do is add a separator line with a date between the histories of
each

Can I read a file into my workspace from Rprofile.site?
I am running R version 2.8.1 on Windows XP OS.
When I launch R, I would like to automatically read a file containing my
database connections, user ids, and passwords into my workspace.
I tried including this in my Rprofile.site file:
...
local({
old <- getOption("defaultPackages")
options(defaultPackages = c(old, "Rcmdr","RODBC", "utils"))
})

Rprofile not executed in R 2.2.0 alpha for Windows
Dear list members (esp. Duncan),
I've run into the following curious problem with Version 2.2.0 alpha for
Windows: Options in the Profile file in R's etc directory don't appear to be
set. (I habitually uncomment options(chmhelp=TRUE), to no effect in this
case.) As far as I can see, the only thing non-standard about my
installation is that I put R 2.2.0 alpha under c:\R rather than

configure help
Hello,
as I just spent a (too long) while searching
for a way how to persistantly switch back the help display
routines from chm to text, here a small documentation
how to do that with the windows version of R.
The windows installer asks which help type
you want to use, I wanted to test the chm
version -- which I didn't like.
If you after installation want to switch back,
you have to edit

Recommended way to change defaultPackages under Windows
What is the recommended way to change the default set of packages that
are loaded at startup by R for Windows? I am writing vignettes for
the Devore6 package which my introductory engineering statistics
students will use and I would like to describe how the R environment
can be changed so that this package is loaded by default.
I understand from the R for Windows FAQ that one way would be to

suppress startup messages from default packages
Hi all,
several packages print messages during loading. How do I avoid to see
them when the packages are in the defaultPackages?
Here is an example.
With this in ~/.Rprofile

| old <- getOption("defaultPackages")
| options(defaultPackages = c(old, "filehash"))
| rm(old)

I get as last line when starting R:

R and R commander
Hi,
I am a student studying Biostatistics at University. We have been advised to install R and R commander. I managed to do this successfully, except I wasn't able to complete the final step - which would enable both R and R commander to launch when I open the R icon on my desktop.
However, I haven't been able to save it and for this to work.
The last instructions we were given are:

undocumented objects in a package
Dear R-devel,
I recall that there used to be a mechanism to get around the requirement
that all objects in a package have associated documentation; i.e., a way to
specify a list of objects (mostly functions) that are not considered as part
of the package API. Is this still available? I cannot find any mention in
R-exts.
I realize that the way to go is to have a name space, and eventually

how to exclude terms preceded by - from model frame
[I believe few users manipulate formulae and model frames like this, so
I'm posting here instead of R-help.]
I just found out that model.frame() includes all terms, including those
preceded by "-" in the formula, in its output (as mentioned on its help
page). Is there a recommended way of excluding "negative" terms? My
guess is that I can use info in the terms attribute

Problem when making refman.pdf on WinXP (R 1.7.1)
Dear R-help,
Can some one tell me what could be the problem? I downloaded the R-1.7.1
source and try to compile it on WinXP. "make", "make bitmapdll", "make
tcl", "make recommended" all ran w/o problem. However, when I ran "make
docs", it failed at creating refman.pdf, with no apparent error that I could
see. I have attached the log file

compilers for R on AMD64
Dear R-devel,
A while ago Prof. Ripley had mentioned that g77 on AMD64 isn't the greatest,
and the Salford Fortran is likely to be better. My question is, has anyone
tried compiling R with Salford compilers (or other commercial compilers)?
If so, do they offer performance advantages over GCC?
TIA for any info.

help diagnosing ftp problem
Dear R-help,
I've been compiling R from source on our Linux boxes for quite a while. One
thing that bugs me is that I always get an error when make check-all where
it choked up running tests/internet.R. That wasn't a big deal, as I can run
install.packages()/update.packages() fine, and that's all I use the 'net
connection for. The problem is that it takes a _long_ time to fail

Lwd ignored when printing on Windows
Dear R-help,
Has anyone notice the problem that, on Windows (NT and XP), when printing a
graph using the "File -> Print..." menu in the graphics window to print the
graph, that line width seemed to be ignored in the printed output? For
example, if I make a plot with plot(1:10, type="l", lwd=5), it looks right
on screen, but when printed out using the menu, it looks like

Solved two problems with Cygwin
While installing software on a new computer, I thought I would try to use
Cygwin to build an R package. (Note: NOT Ripley/Murdoch's Rtools).
I uncovered and solved two issues, one of which appears to be identical to a
problem previously reported (and unsolved) on this list. I offer this
information in case it will be helpful.
(1) Cygwin defaults to UNIX mode when installed, but it appears
