Linux Editor
Hi Everyone,
I recently have started using R again on a Linux box after spending several
years on a Mac. Last I checked, the best way to use R was through EMACS
using something like ESS. I remember that being serviceable but not always
the most convenient.
Is there anything comparable to the mac version of R with its built in
console, editor, etc??
thanks!

what is the best way for an external interface to interact with graphics, libraries
Another message about the R to TeXmacs interface.
1. Graphics
The TeXmacs interface allows the user to directly insert graphics into the
session.
Since I am not very familiar with programming for R, I implemented the
interaction with graphics in a very primitive way. It was two modes of
working: with X11, and without (for example when working remotely through
ssh without forwarding X11).

Alternativas a pgfSewave

Is an R sub-session somehow possible?
I wrote the interface between R and TeXmacs. Recently, I added tab
completion. However, there is one slight problem. In order to enable easy
interaction with R, I (I.e. my program) interact with the command-line
interface. This means that the user can invoke demo(), and then R will
interact with the user and ask to press enter.
It also means that the user can enter
a<-c(3,4
and then R will

First testing of R-2.0.0 alpha on Gentoo Linux
I just got R-2.0.0 alpha running on my Gentoo Linux system. The only
issue I had was that if I do "--with-lapack" in the "configure", "make
check" fails very early. Once I removed that option, "make check-all"
passed. I have both "blas-atlas" and "lapack-atlas" installed on my
system. The Atlas version is 3.6.0.
There were a few warnings

Dear R programmers,
is there a sensible explanation for the following behaviour? The second

GUI's for R
Hello,
I am not currently using R but I have been using S+ for sevaral years. I
think that I fit in the category of power users, never using the GUI
prefering the flexibility of a command line interface (CLI). In a short
while I will try to move to R, that is if we can convince our IT people
that installing a freeware package on a Unix server will not damaged the
companie's network! The

Formatting axis label numbers on plots
Is there any way to control the format of the axis label numbers on a
plot? More specifically, I have some plots that get axes with label
numbers in exponential format, and I'd like to change that to
non-exponential. Thanks!!

conditional assignments and calculations
Hello!
I am using the TeXmacs interface to R. (Though I encountered a similar
problem when using Sweave)
In doing calculations I often ecounter this scenario: I'll have some
calculations in my file:
--
A=read.lots.of.data()
B=huge.calculation.on(A)
C=another.calculation.on(B)
--
Now, if A has already been read, I don't need to re-read it. If B has
already been calculated, I don't

Everyone wants a RoR framework
It seems like everyone now has a RoR type framework:
Perl:
http://dev.catalyst.perl.org/
PHP:
http://cakephp.org/
Python:
http://www.django.com
ASP.NET:
http://www.castleproject.org/index.php/Main_Page
etc., etc.
Has a revolution begun with the birth of these "Web 2.0" frameworks?
Its going to be interesting when the tech media begins its mass hype

how to limit output to console beyond options(max.print) ?
I have code that generates a structure that includes in it 30 data
frames of size 57*1004.
It isn't so important why I needed shape of data frame, maybe I didn't....
I have options(max.print) set to a low number but it seems that this
does not have much effect - printing my structure still takes hours,
as does str()-ing it.
here is short code that exhibits and doesn't exhibit the

test for bimodality
Dear R users,
I'm looking for a test of bimodality in order to make some decisions about how to procede with an analysis algorithm. I have not come across any such tests in my readings and discussions apart from the Rao which appears to be applicable to cyclic data.
The data I'm interested in characterizing as uni- or bimodal are frequency x amplitude spectra of consonant speech sounds,

Which mysql for a new project?
Hi all,
I am about to start a new RoR project. Which version of mysql is the
current best one to use? I will be using the soon-to-be-released RoR
1.0 for the project. I really don''t want to start a PostreSQL vs.
MySQL vs. Whatever war. I have all databases including Oracle at my
disposal. This project will be my testbed for using RoR with mysql. I
will be doing other tests with other dbs

style question: returning multiple arguments - structure or list
I have a question about what is considered good style in R.
I have a function which returns several arguments, say [x,y,z]=f(),
where sometimes I only care about the first few
(so in Matlab, I can write e.g., [x,y] = f()).
In R, there seem to be 2 ways to write this, both unsatisfying (to me):
LIST
f <- function() {
...
list(x=x,y=y,z=z)
}
res <- f()
x <- res$x; y <- res$y; z

Modulus operator??

version:
R : Copyright 2001, The R Development Core Team
Version 1.2.2 Patched (2001-03-22)
Here's what the R language manual says:
"R contains a number of operators. They are listed in the table below.

Here's what happens on the R console:

save plot graph
Dear all,
I have a lot plot graphs and i would like to save them.
One solution is to use the grab function with xv.
But it is tedious....
So is there a R function that can save automatically
the result of a plot in a gif or ps or bmp file
Thanks

fun/flamebait: Java Web Devel Stacks
I''ll pose a question partly for fun, partly out of interest to see
what everyone else is doing to survive the pain of the day job. It''s
for the professional J2EE developer converts out there.
Let''s say someone hired you to write a Basecamp clone, but it has to
be done in Java, say on the Tomcat or JBoss platform. What does your
stack look like now that you''ve
