Adding a new column to data frame (recoding)

For example, here is a simple data frame: var1 1 1 2 2 3 3 How do I add a new column to data - 'var2' in which I group values in 'var1', for example: var1 var2 1 1 4 2 2 4 3 3 5 It's got to

Sorry to ask such a ridiculous question on a mailing list, but the stuff @ redhat is for the 2.2.x kernel, and I can't seem to find much in the way of a home page/ftp site/anything. Thanks in advance. Derek R. --
