"#!/usr/bin/R"
Hi all,
Is there any documentation on running R like one would run a shell or
Perl script, with out/input directed appropriately, environment variable
access, and command switch processing?
I looked some, and even remembered to check the FAQ, but couldn't find
anything.
Thanks

label separators in boxplots with conditioning
Hi R-helpers,
I have a data.frame with three columns (lots more reps though in each),
like so:
'FOO' 'BAR' 'RESULT'
1 .01 75
1 .05 12
1.1 .01 100
1.1 .05 50
1.2 .01 75
1.2 .05 12
I am calling boxplot(RESULT ~ FOO:BAR, ...) This

weirdness in sourc()ing a dump() (bug?)
Hi all,
I dump the result of a long simulation, which I know has run to
completion and returned a fairly complex list of lists of things.
However, when I try to read it back in, I get the following error:
> source ('../SIMULATIONS/run.1.R')
Error in structure(list(do.extinction.runs, alpha = 1.8, delta.change =

cgi/servlets/httpd in R
Hi R-helpers
Has anyone had any experience doing CGI or Servlets or using an httpd
server in R?
Context: we are interested in running dynamic demographic calculations
on the internet (life tables, and such) in response to form submissions.
I might do simple cgi to get started, but loading in data each time
seems like it would be quite, quite slow.
I have looked at Rserv, but I am most

printing tabular data nicely
Hi R-heplers,
I would like to print various matrices, dataframes, tables, etc to
files, preferably nicely formatted postscript for import into papers.
Is there a way to do this?
I know ?cat, ?writeLines, ?format, ?paste. But I am not sure of a good
combination of these in order to get a nice looking table of information.
Any ideas? I guess I want (almost) publication ready output, just

GUI data browsers
Hi R-helpers,
Does anyone know of a good Tk (or other) script that allows somewhat
intuitive viewing of all of the variables (especially complex lists) in
a session? I would also like to delete, save to file, and rename them
graphically. I would also like a lot of supplemental information like
class, atrributes, names, modes, whatever else...
Context: I am running simulations

vector normal to a plane
Hi All,
(I have a degree in math, but I am too embarassed to ask my colleagues,
so here goes:)
I would like to get a vector normal (orthogonal) to a plane formed by
two other vectors. In matlab I do this:
v1 = [.4, .6, .8]; v2 = [.9, .7, .2]; nn = cross(v1,v2) (gives ~[-.48,
.65, -.24]
if I do R> cross(v1, v2), I get .94. Huh?
Thanks for all your help, again.

adding syslinux mailing list to gmane.org
Hello!
I would like to add the syslinux mailing list to gmane.org so I can read
it with my newsreader (I think it is more convenient).
Is that ok?
For more information go to http://www.gmane.org/
Cheers

Assigning rank based on total count
Hi all,
I am using ACS micro data (PUMS) with one of the columns as a
factor for the place of birth (POBPF). I would like to create
a column (POBR) containing a rank
corresponding to the place of the observation
in the POBPF rankings. For example,
if a person is from Oregon, Oregon is
the most popular Place of Birth, so each
person who came from Oregon should have a 1
in their POBR.

read.spss Error reading system-file header
Is there any documentation on what kind of SPSS file can and cannot be
read by read.spss? Alternatively, how can one modify or "clean" an SPSS
file to make it readable by read.spss? What properties must a *.sav file
before read.spss can read it?
The file in this example is 270KB, with 5 rows and 173 columns. I have no
trouble reading larger files with read.spss, so it's not

PDF text strangeness (PR#7043)
Hi R-developers
I have noticed a strange little bug/feature: I often create pdf's of plots, then edit them in Adobe Illustrator. Generally this works great, but whenever I have text that is aligned vertically (along the y-axis usually), the text is written out as lots of individual objects. When the text is horizontal (x-axis, other stuff), it is all one object. I would prefer one object

plotting planes and lines in wireframe()
Hi R-helpers
I would like to plot some planes which are perpendicular to the x-y
plane, such as x=y. Is there a way to do this in wireframe? I realize
that I am not plotting a function of x, y since there are infinite
number of z's that satisfy the above relation.... Hmm...
Somewhat related, I would also like to plot a line in 3 d space...
Finally, if you are feeling really brave, I

Gmane-interface
Hello,
I got a hint to use the gmane-interface...
...nice tool. :)
But the gmane-server which is mentioned ont he healp-pages of
http://www.r-project.org/
http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general
and the links on that page also,
just only bring me to an gamne-archive, which is outdated.

Writing responses to the R-Help list
A while back Gabor Grothendieck suggested that I try
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general. This was after I asked how
to easily reply to posts on the listserve. Ideally I would like the
functionality that I find in Microsoft Outlook Express newsreader for usenet
groups or what I find in Google Groups.
I started using gmane about 3 weeks ago. I find it fantastic for searching

Zfs and b114 version
http://dlc.sun.com/osol/on/downloads/b114/
This URL makes me think that if I just sit down and figure out how to
compile OpenSolaris, I can try b114 now^h^h^h eventually ? I am really
eager to try out the new quota support.. has someone already tried
compiling it perhaps? How complicated is compiling osol compared to,
say, NetBSD/FreeBSD, Linux etc ? (IRIX and its quickstarting??)

I do not understand this
A few days ago there was a thread on calling R from Delphi to which
there were several useful responses. Now I responded as well, with
what I regard as a useful contribution. Shortly after that, I was not
able to able to see the thread in my newsreader (Thunderbird).
Suddenly, yesterday I could see the thread again, and now it has
vanished, at least from my sight.
Now. Is there an error

Windows cannot access \\server check the spelling of the name 0x800704cf
So then looking at my config files for both machines you see no problems there? I'm testing now, but I'm wondering if this is only happening on windows 10 clients.
Thanks,
