Dots are not fixed by make.names()
Hi It seems that names of the form "..#" and "..." are not fixed by make.names(), even though they are reserved words. The documentation reads: > [...] Names such as ".2way" are not valid, and neither are the reserved words. > Reserved words in R: [...] ... and ..1, ..2 etc, which are used to refer to arguments passed down from a calling function, see

writing text on graphics' window
Hi, Does anyone know of a method for writing text to the graphics window, where there is *no* plot? Basically, I have developed a 'significance test' and I would like the output on the graphics window to say something about the input parameters and the stats of the significance test. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Sam.

Margins on tables
It has long been a nuisance to me not being able to form margins on multiway tables in a simple fashion, so i wrote margins(). In my opinion it should go into the base package. The code and the documentation is in: http://www.biostat.ku.dk/~bxc/R/margins/ Please help yourself, and enhance and rename as you see fit. tab-complete for non-syntactic names could attempt backtick-wrapping
Consider: x <- list(`a b` = 1) x$a<tab> (i.e., press the 'tab' key after typing 'x$a') The auto-complete mechanism will fill the buffer like so: x$a b This is not particularly helpful because this is now a syntax error. It seems to me there's a simple fix -- in utils:::specialCompletions(), we can wrap the result of utils:::specialOpCompletionsHelper() with

replacing " with &quot;
Python-markdown currently replaces all straight quotes (`"`) with the html entity (`&quot;`). Someone recently complained about this in a [bug report][]. As it turns out the quote was the symptom that brought the real problem to light[^1]. In any event, the reporter pointed out that markdown.pl does not replace straight quotes with the html entity. I know John Gruber has mentioned before

backticks
I noticed just now that package.skeleton() produces R files in which the function names are escaped with backticks. ?Quotes says that "The preferred quote is the backtick (`)", but I don't understand _why_ this is preferred. ?formula gives some clues but points out that there are no guarantees that formulae using non-syntactic names such as `like this` will be accepted. What

inconsistency with names on call object
With most sorts of objects the following three expression have the same value: names(obj) attr(obj, "names") attributes(obj)$names However, for call objects the last gives NULL, whether there are names or not. > obj <- quote(func(one=1)) > obj func(one = 1) > names(obj) [1] "" "one" > attr(obj, "names")

Mocking system/`
This drives me insane on a regular basis. How does one mock system(''blah'') or `blah` ? Adding expectations on Kernel doesn''t do it. Adding expectations on Object just makes me sad: Object.any_instance.expects(:system).with(''ls'') # => #<Mock:0x12b584e>.system(''ls'') - expected calls: 0, actual calls: 1 And this really

authentication with mysql - problem with table name escaping
Found a problem with dovecot 1.0.3 and mysql authentication I got a problem with escaping of mysql table names. Usually, when a mysql table name has some special character (in my case there is a table beginning with the # character) one has to put into these special quotes --- ` ---; others like ' oder " are not recognized. But dovecot somehow doesn't allow me to do that. After

using names with functions..
Dear all, I have the following (rather) strange problem.. For some reasons, I finally work with a variable whose name includes an R function, "a.log(z)", say. And that is a problem when I call it in a formula, for instance: > myname<-"a.log(z)" > dd<-data.frame("a.log(z)"=1:10,y=rnorm(10)) > o<-lm(y~1,data=dd) >

Backtick Hickup
I'm using Michel Fortin's MDTest cases to rewrite my html2text.php script. Just now I stumbled upon this bug (in PHP Markdown at least): # Input: Backtick: ``\``` # Output: <p>Backtick: ``&#96;``</p> # Should-Be Output: <p>Backtick: <code>`</code></p> If you (Michel) are already aware of this, just ignore me ;-) -- Milian Wolff

Inconsistency, may be bug in read.delim ?
Dear friends, I stumbled into beheaviour of read.delim which I would consider a bug or at least an inconsistency that should be improved upon. Recently we had to work with data that used "", two double quotes, as symbol to start and end character input. Essentially the data looked like this data.csv ======== V1, V2, V3 ""data"", 3, """" The

Backquote in R syntax
Hi Folks, Can someone satisfy my curiosity (well, at least about the following query!) Reading the draft proofs of an article I've been asked to look through, I find the typesetter has set what would normally be entered as source("xyz.R") or source('xyz.R') as source(`xyz.R') i.e. it has come out with an opening backquote, then xyz.R, then a closing forward

Escaping inside code blocks?
I am doing unit-tests for Maruku and every once in a while I run into some doubts. I am posting a lot to the list, but all of these messages should be in-topic (tell me if not). Consider the input: --- `There is a literal backtick (\`) here.` `There is a literal backtick (\\`) here.` ``There is a literal backtick (`) here.`` --- The documentation says that line 2 and 3 are equivalent.

MySQL backticks and column names
The upgrade to Rails 1.1 hurt my ability to run tests because it generated the following MySQL error: Mysql::Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''key ON config (key)'' at line 1: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX key ON config (key) I have a table called `config` with a column

Deprecation of scp protocol and improving sftp client
It seems that there are a few camps here: * The scp power users - this camp believes that scp supporting backtick notation is fine and that running arbitrary commands is a perfectly fine thing to do. * The restricted shell users - this camp believes that scp supporting backtick may not be the best, and there are various restricted shells which can prevent this. Power users may belong to this
