setGeneric?
In the last few days I've received couple of messages pointing out that our SparseM package fails to install on the patched version of 1.7.0. Laurent Gaultier kindly suggested that replacing: setGeneric("as.matrix.csr") by setGeneric("as.matrix.csr", function(x, nrow, ncol, eps) standardGeneric("as.matrix.csr")) was sufficient to fix the problem.

What does is() mean?
Suppose you have a class, say sex, for lack of a better example, and you are tempted, in defining the behavior of the call, is(x,"sex") to check whether certain basic features are satisfied, not to just trust the claim that x is specified to be of class "sex". `Without delving into details further sanity checking of the structure of the object is sometimes prudent to avoid

Rprof/UseMethod
I'm having difficulty with Rprof. I have a documentation example test.qss that runs fine without profiling, but under Rprof, > Rprof() > source("test.qss") Error in standardGeneric("model.matrix") : UseMethod used in an inappropriate fashion Luke wrote about a similar circumstance last summer: # From: Luke Tierney (luke@stat.umn.edu) # Date: Fri Jul

make fails for 1.7.0 on mac os x 10.1
I've been running a binary installation (kindly provided by Jan de Leeuw) on mac G4, but was inspired this morning to try to install 1.7.0 on the G4 as well as on my desktop solaris box. This worked smoothly on my solaris system but on the G4 the make dies shortly after compiling lapack with: /usr/bin/libtool: internal link edit command failed make[4]: *** [libRlapack.dylib] Error 1 make[3]:

setIs?
I've recently updated from an early February version of 1.7.0 to Version 1.7.0 Under development (unstable) (2003-03-25) and am now having problems with errors giving the message: ' getExtends(ClassDef) : @ must be used on an object with a formal class' which seems to be caused by 'setIs("character","character or NULL")' which attempts to define

make? on Macos 10.2.4
Greetings on A.N. Kolmogorov's 100th birthday: I am sure that this is a resolved problem, certainly it has been raised in R help several times before, but I can't seem to find the right clue. I've recently upgraded a G4 to OS 10.2.5 and I thought I would have another go at installing R from source, after failing to accomplish this in 10.1. So with 1.7.0 from CRAN configure seems to

terms.formula
I'm in the very initial stage of expanding the formula processing in my quantile regression function rq() to handle additive nonparametric components, say qss(x), or qss(x,z). I need some advice about strategy for formula processing. My initial foray was to use: terms(formula,specials="qss") and then modify the components of the resulting terms.object. But in changing formula

regression in batches?
Hello, I have a data set that's too large to load into memory all at once to do a simple linear regression on. What would be a good way to do a piecewise (batch) regression on it in R? I've started reading the docs and FAQs and haven't found anything yet that would suggest how to do this, aside from diving into the guts of lm(). Thanks and regards--! David Joerg dsjoerg@yahoo.com

stepfuns: R^2 -> R
Does anyone have any suggestions on perspective plotting of piecewise constant functions? Ideally, I would like something like plot.stepfun for functions that are piecewise constant on polygons. Even pointers to non-R strategies would be welcome at this stage. url: www.econ.uiuc.edu Roger Koenker Dept. of Economics UCL, email rkoenker at uiuc.edu Department of Economics Drayton House, vox:

extract half a matrix
Dear all, I'm new to matrix operations in R. I couln't find a solution to the following problem among earlier help mails or in An introd to R, I guess because the question is really basic. I want to extract all above the diagonal, i.e. from 1 2 3 4 1 0 26 49 49 2 26 0 44 40 3 49 44 0 21 4 49 40 21 0 I want 26 49 44 49 40 21 Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Tord

How to get setGeneric() to work?
Dear all, I can't see how setGeneric() works. I know perfectly well how to define library(methods); setClass("Square", representation(side="numeric")); # Will become the default method. getArea <- function(object) { stop(paste("Method getArea() is not defined for this class:", data.class(object))); } setMethod("getArea",

SetGeneric and formula interfaces
Hi, while playing with the `methods' package I was not able to find what the recommended way of dealing with the following problem is. Suppose there is a generic function `foo' and two functions `foo.default' and `foo.formula', in the classical way: foo <- function(y, ...) UseMethod("foo") foo.default <- function(y, ...) {} foo.formula <- function(formula,

setGeneric(); R CMD check
1. Is it always the case that when defining generic functions in a package, the package needs to be installed as a binary package to avoid having the generic functions in the .GlobalEnv? 2. Defining a generic function in a "non-binary" package triggers a check warning $ R CMD check ... ... * checking for code/documentation mismatches ... WARNING Objects

Maybe it is a good time to remove that and export explicitly the symbols that are meant for export. Georgi Boshnakov ------------------------------ Message: 6 Date: Fri, 28

setClass question
I would like to add a class to the SparseM package. I have a class "matrix.csr" that describes a matrix in compressed sparse row format, now I would like a class matrix.diag.csr that describes such objects when they happen to be diagonal. The idea is that matrix.diag.csr objects should behave (later in life) exactly like matrix.csr objects, the distinction is only needed in order to

UNSOLITED E_MAILS: Integrate R data-analysis projects with Microsoft Office for free
Dear R Admins, I received an unsolicited e-mail from BlueInference as an R user. Does it mean that R that our e-mails (and names) is sharing it's user database with third parties without our consent? Or perhaps the BlueInference guys are using an e-mail address miner to get our contact details? [SNIP] Dear Gorden Jemwa, As a fellow R user, I am sure you agree with me that R is a

gfortran 9 quantreg bug
I?d like to solicit some advice on a debugging problem I have in the quantreg package. Kurt and Brian have reported to me that on Debian machines with gfortran 9 library(quantreg) f = summary(rq(foodexp ~ income, data = engel, tau = 1:4/5)) plot(f) fails because summary() produces bogus estimates of the coefficient bounds. This example has been around in my R package from the earliest days of R,
