seemingly random "nesting of readline input" warnings
Recently, while using R-patched and now R-1.6.1 (on RedHat Linux 7.1) I've
been getting the following warning in the course of everyday activity:

In addition: Warning message:

Error: An unusual circumstance has arisen in the nesting of readline input
Hi,
If I have warnings converted to errors, and if I plot a simple plot and
then resize and move the plot's window many times, I eventually get an
error "Display list redraw incomplete", and after a while an endlessly
repeating error "An unusual circumstance has arisen in the nesting of
readline input".
I cannot stop it using Ctrl-C (Ctrl-Z works though).

readline?
We've recently "upgraded" a server to solaris 8, and in reinstalling R
I've encountered a problem in getting it to recognize the readline library.
I have installed readline in what I believe to be the "usual" place:
/usr/local/lib with include files in /usr/local/include/readline.
But ./configure produces:

readline with R-1.4.0
Hi,
I am not sure if this is a bug, so I am posting it here. I also searched
the FAQ file for the readline string and did not find anything about the
behavior below.
I just successfully rsync'ed, compiled and tested R-1.4.0 on my RH 7.2
Linux machine. I encountered one problem though. When running ./configure
I noticed that I was getting errors from the readline library. Although

Barry,
Would you mind providing the necessary patch for this behavior?
Thanks,

building r-devel on RedHat 7.1 with gcc 3.1.1
Has anyone tried to build r-devel on a RedHat 7.1 with the gcc 3.1.1
compiler? I didn't have problems with gcc 2.95.x or gcc 3.0.4, but when I
ran the configure with gcc 3.1.1 I got the following error:

Bug in boxplot(..., add=TRUE) ?
R 1.6.1 on Windows NT4:
The boxplot() function appears to draw its own tick marks
and axis values even when called with add=TRUE. As a toy
example, try
x <- rnorm(100)
f <- factor(rep(1:4, each=25))
plot(c(0,4), c(-3,3), type="n", xaxt="n", yaxt="n")
boxplot(x ~ f, add=TRUE)
My expectation is that a high-level plotting function will
not mess with the axes

Principal Component analysis question
I have a question about princomp(mva) that I hope isn't too newbie.
I used the sample data from Table 1.1 in "Manly (1986/1994) Multivariate
Statistical Methods: a primer. Chapman and Hall" on sparrow body
measurements.
I rescaled the data to mean 0 and SD 1, and the covariance matrix is:
V1 V2 V3 V4 V5
V1 1.0000000 0.7349642 0.6618119

Writing packages with `methods' package
I'm trying to write a package which uses classes/methods as defined in the
`methods' package. I have a single .R file which defines the class and
various methods for that class. At the top of the file I have
require(methods)
and then
setClass("myclass", ...)
setGeneric("intersect")
setMethod("intersect", "myclass", function(x,y) ...)

cdf of the standard normal distribution
Dear Experts,
I need to calculate the cdf of the standard normal distribution, i.e.
H(x) = 1/sqrt(2*pi) integral(exp(-z^2/2) dz), where z is b/w -infi to
infi.
I know there should be a way to do it in R, but did not know to do it.
I'd appreciate any help you could offer.

Contour Plots
r-help,
I can't seem to get the below data organized in such a manner so as to
generate a contour plot
using any of the functions {lattice.contourplot, base.contour,
base.filled.contour}. I was wondering
if anyone could please tell me what I need to do to accomplish this.

geoR question from new R user
Hi,
I'm a new R user. My goal is to do a variogram using geoR.
I started by trying to do the example in the geoR Illustrative Session
using my own data.
I am able to read in my Ascii data using: D <- matrix(scan("file.dat",
n=530*3), 530,3, byrow=TRUE).
Then I use: as.geodata(D, coords.col=1:2, data.col=3) to make the
object D geodata.
I check the descriptive statistics,

gif, jpeg and png image files reader
Hi all,
Although R seems to have jpeg() and png() functions that converts data into
jpeg and png formated files, it
doesn't have functions the other way around.
Does one of R contributed packages have gif, jpeg and png image readers? I
did help.search() but no luck
Regards,
Jonathan

List of lists? Data frames? (Or other data structures?)
Hi, I'm faced with the following problem and would appreciate some
advice.
I could have a data frame x that looks like this:
aa bb
a 1 "A"
b 2 "B"
The advantage of this is that I could access all the individual
components easily. Also I could access all the rows and columns
easily.
Alternatively, I could have a list of

sourcing a file with the plot.lme() function
I ran into a problem trying to make a plot from a file that's read using
source. Basically, I have the following code in a file "plot.R" :
library(nlme)
data(Loblolly)
fm1 <- nlme(height ~ SSasymp(age, Asym, R0, lrc),
data = Loblolly,
fixed = Asym + R0 + lrc ~ 1,
random = Asym ~ 1,
start = c(Asym = 103, R0 = -8.5, lrc = -3.3))

shared ATLAS library?
>From "R Installation and Administration:"
Note that the BLAS library will be used for several add-on packages as
well as for R itself. This means that it is better to use a
shared BLAS library, as most of a static library will be compiled
into the R executable and each BLAS-using package.
Is there an idiots guide on how to do this (or should idiots just not try).

Does the function 'matmult' still exist in R? It has a help page and is
referenced in the help page for 'kronecker', but I can't seem to access
the function itself. Obviously, not an issue of great concern but just a
curiosity.

X11 connection error in web cgi mode only
Dear all,
I am trying to create a web interface using Perl-CGI to call R plots and
to display them.
The following codes works perfectly fine when I copy and paste into the
console directly or if I save it into script.file and then R --no-save <
script.file producing the graphs.
jpeg("graph.jpeg", width=400, height=400)
plot(rnorm(100))

Now, I put the line system("R
