Variable Importance - Random Forest
Hello, I am trying to explore the use of random forests for classification and am certain about the interpretation of the importance measurements. When having the option "importance = T" in the randomForest call, the resulting 'importance' element matrix has four columns with the following headings: 0 - mean raw importance score of variable x for class 0 (where

Startup/Initialization Memory Leak in R
Is it already known that R does not free the memory that it allocates during start-up (~10MB) when it exits? If so, are there currently any plans to address this problem? I noticed that the 1.6.0 beta leaks slightly more memory (~300k) than the 1.5.1 stable version. I am working on a project that links with the R library, and there is a question about unloading and later re-loading the

A demonstrated shortcoming of the R package management system
CRAN, by relying on the powerful package management system that is part of R, provides an unparalleled framework for extending R with nearly 20k packages. We recently encountered an issue that highlights a missing element in the otherwise outstanding package management system. So we would like to start a discussion about enhancing its feature set. As shown below, a mechanism to force

snip.rpart with R 1.6.0
Hello! I've a question to the rpart package. With the snip.rpart function, you can snip off subtrees. In R 1.5.1 this function works without problems. But in the new version of R (1.6.0) it isn't possible to snip off the subtrees wi th this function. Does someone have a solution for this problem? thsudler at swissonline.ch

recordPlot in 1.5.x, replayPlot in 1.6.0 problem
I have plots that were stored using recordPlot() in a fairly recent but pre-1.6.0 version of R that will not replayPlot() in R 1.6.0. The error message is Error in replayPlot(x) : invalid hex digit in color or lty The plots were stored in June (2002-6-14), each as an element of a list named 'rpl'. The version of R that was current then is what I used. At that time I was able to
