lib.fixup
My previous post mentions a problem encountered when calling ".Internal(
lib.fixup..." in R1.5.0. I have since found a workaround. It's possible in
R1.5.0 to set attributes of search path environments directly, like so:
> env_ pos.to.env( 3)
> attr( env, 'any.attr')_ 'any.value'
> pos.to.env( 3)
<environment: package:tcltk>

restart
Dear group
I use "restart" in part of my code, in a way that's not easily changed to
"try". As I convert code from R1.5.0 to R1.6.1, I'm getting ugly messages;
the help system says to contact r-devel, so here I am. This one's a bit
complicated-- sorry!
The context is inside a debugger (I have an R and S debugger that offers
stand-alone code windows, line numbered

Questions on Instalation of SJava Package to R1.5.0
Dear Expects,
I tried to install the SJava package to the Library subdirectory of my
R1.5.0. However, when I tried it according to the instructions from
http://www.omegahat.org/RSJava/, I got the following error messages:

Error in .Defunct() : `.Alias' is defunct.
See ?Defunct.

FW: Debug package question
Dear list,
I received the response below from the package author of 'debug'. I
post it to the list, with Mark's approval, in case it is useful to
others too.
Regards, Matthew

wishlist: I miss Frame 0 (PR#1557)

In the process of part-switching from S to R, one thing I find myself missing
greatly is S's Frame 0 feature. This is a very convenient place to put
session-level stuff, and to make temporary copies of things (e.g. system
functions) without overwriting the "real" objects lower down

There is a bug to do with 'load', environment access via '[[', and 'attr<-' or
'attributes<-'. Modifying the attributes of a *copy* of an object can modify the
original too, under certain conditions:

fixup for debug package and R2.4.0
A number of users have spotted a terminal problem with the 'debug' package under R2.4.0, along the lines of

Error in attr(value, "row.names") <- rlabs :
row names must be 'character' or 'integer', not 'double'
This arose from a bug in 'rbind.data.frame' in R2.4.0 itself. The bug is fixed in R2.4.0 patched, so the

Summary: Changing workspace from within an R session
Thanks to Frank Harrell, Brian Ripley, Andy Liaw, Jeff Laake and Sean Davis
for their usefull comments regarding "navigation" between valid R
directories.
Jeff recommanded the Mark Bravington package that can be found at:
(ftp://ftp.marine.csiro.au/software/bravington/). I looked at the package
and found that it can do a lot more than what I asked for. At this time I

savehistory directories and quitting R (PR#2038)
Thanks-- as Duncan Murdoch also noted, R_HISTFILE can be used to solve my
problem, as below. BTW it's not easy to find out about R_HISTFILE in the
help system or manuals, though, unless you already know it exists-- it only
seems to be described under startup options, not things to do with history.
However, Duncan's reply did hint at an inconsistency, in that savehistory()
defaults to

lib.fixup
Hi, all,
Can anyone tell me what this line in library() does?
.Internal(lib.fixup(env, .GlobalEnv))
The reason I ask is that I'm writing a function that uses a bit of library()
code, and I want to know if I should include it:
g.data.attach <- function(dir, pos=2) {
env <- attach(NULL, pos, paste("package",basename(dir),sep=":"))
attr(env,

Difference in 'read.table' between R.1.4.1 and R1.5.0
This sequence of commands worked fine in R.1.4.1. The data file was the
same in both instances:

'end',
+ 'elapsed', 'sys', 'usr', 'cpu', 'char', 'blocks'),

(PR#3658)
The function 'getAnywhere' crashes if given a non-existent name containing a period:
> getAnywhere( 'nomethod.noclassforme')
Error in get(x, envir, mode, inherits) : variable "nomethod" was not found
However, 'getAnywhere' behaves gracefully if the non-existent name lacks a period:

GlobalEnv error
You haven't given much context, but these error message can come from
load() when loading a *.RData file that contains objects reference packages
not installed in the current installation of R. When R starts it will load
a ".RData" file if one exists, this file is typically created when R shuts
down
and you ask it to save the current session. If you recently upgraded R you

tkinsert (PR#4289)
In R-1.7.1, I used to be able to append a character vector to a 'tklistbox' with e.g.
listio <- tklistbox( tktoplevel(), font='Courier', height=20, width=20, setgrid=TRUE)
tkinsert( listio, 'end', letters[1:3])
tkpack( listio,side='left', expand=TRUE, fill='both')
and three items would be added to 'listio'. This doesn't work in R-devel-- it

GlobalEnv error
Previously, the R software was perfectly run without error and I am not
sure why this happens. I have not installed any new R. If the *RData file
is the problem, what should I do?
Thank you

eval using a environment X but resultsin .GlobalEnv
Hello,
Suppose I have an expression, E, which accesses some variables present
in an environment V.
I do this via
eval(E,envir=V)
however all assignments end up in V. I would like the results of
assignments in E to end up in the .GlobalEnv ? Or at least the calling
environment.
Is there a quick way to this instead of iterating over all objects E
and assigning into .GlobalEnv?
Thank you
