Bug#123084: r-base: R documentatio search engine unusable with Mozilla 6 (OK with netscape 4.7x) (PR#1202)
As there is nothing Debian-specific in this bug report (and the .deb of the
JVW is not from Debian either), I am forwarding this to R-bugs. My
recollection from recent discussions on the R mailing list is that currently
/no/ browser other than Netscape supports the Java search engine -- is that
correct or was there some Netscape derivative (galeon?) which does?
Maybe the documentation should be

To best of my knowledge, this R feature dates from a time when
Netscape was essentially the only browser out there. It also had
a most useful feature: you could attach new request (resulting in
a new "frame" in X11 / window manager

display URLs in browsers
Maybe someone knows the answer right away, but I am afraid that all of
us are on Netscape ...
With Netscape, we can do
netscape -remote -openURL($url)
Does anyone know how to get browsers other than Netscape to display
URLs?
I am specifically interested in
gnome-help-browser
mozilla
but would welcome any pointers.

Using the Search Engine & Keywords
Dear R experts,
Can anyone running R on Linux share how they use the "Search Engine &
Keywords" page of R documentation? I cannot do any javascript on this page,
either searching for a term or following the keyword links. I tried Konqueror
(3.0.4, with javascript globally enabled), Mozilla (1.1), and Galeon (1.2.5),
but none of them do anything...
Sorry, I don't know

display URL in browser
Does anyone know whether one can ``remotely'' make konqueror display a
URL a la netscape -remote 'openURL(url)', and how this can be done?
Thanks

R-beta: modified "help.start()"
Hi,
this modified version of help.start() makes it possible to store R Documentation
on your (intranet) webserver.
This could be necessary if you run netscape and R from different systems on one
X11 display (if there is no $RHOME directory on the host running netscape).

R search engine broken (PR#6653)
Full_Name: St?phane Gourichon
Version: R 1.7.1 (2003-06-16).
OS: GNU/Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (132.227.205.226)
The HTML help is great. But the search engine is broken.
It used to work in Galeon 1.x, not Konqueror 3.0 .
Now it doesn't work, neither on Mozilla 1.6 / Firebird 0.6 / Firefox 0.8 nor
Konqueror 3.2 which are IMHO the latest versions of those advanced,

Documentatio: typo in Writing R Extensions (PR#557)
Full_Name: stephen eglen
Version: 1.0.0
OS: Unix (OSF/1)
Submission from: (NULL) (129.215.238.26)
Hi,
in the documentation `Writing R Extensions', the section 3.6.1 (handling the
effects of garbage collection) has the following typo:
Protecting a SEXP pointer protexts ...
Should that be `protects'?

calling browser in Windows
I'm working on the interface to LiveGraphics3D (Java applet for dynamic
3D graphics) that I mentioned earlier on the list, and I've hit a
cross-platform problem.
I want to allow the option of popping up a browser or opening the file
in a browser automatically. On Unix, the following (stolen from
help.start()) works:
system(paste(browser, " -remote \"openURL(", url,

With invaluable help here, I've just gotten 6.0 onto a PC. I went
through the listings in PackageKit, removing things I know I'll never

browseURL question
I have a quick question about the browseURL function. When I use the function in a UNIX environment, I have to use two sets of quotations if I have the & symbol in the URL. For Windows I only need to use the first set. For example, on Windows:
browseURL("http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Bioconductor&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-tab-web-t&n=20&fl=0&x=wrt")

swat error
I am getting the following error when trying to connect to

chdir failed - the server is not configured correctly
Are there any known fixes for this ?
Also:
I noticed that some of the directives, such as datadir, might be
non-functional or ignored elsewhere in coding of swat
Could this be the cause of the above errors ?
Finally here is the cli output

How do you make wine do real uninstalls?
I have tried installing various GPS/topo map software suites on
four Fedora machines under wine. On three of them, the install claims to
succeed; the suite fails even to launch; I try to uninstall it; the
uninstall either admits failure, or pretends to succeed while leaving the
software still there and clickable (but, of course, not launchable).
On one, I then ran a Fedora search (beagle, I
