Orthogonal Polynomial Regression Parameter Estimation
Dear all, Can any one tell me how can i perform Orthogonal Polynomial Regression parameter estimation in R? -------------------------------------------- Here is an "Orthogonal Polynomial" Regression problem collected from Draper, Smith(1981), page 269. Note that only value of alpha0 (intercept term) and signs of each estimate match with the result obtained from coef(orth.fit). What

nls() newbie convergence problem
I'm sure this must be a nls() newbie question, but I'm stumped. I'm trying to do the example from Draper and Yang (1997). They give this snippet of S-Plus code: Specify the weight function: weight < - function(y,x1,x2,b0,b1,b2) { pred <- b0+b1*x1 + b2*x2 parms <- abs(b1*b2)^(1/3) (y-pred)/parms } Fit the model gmfit < -nls(~weight(y,x1,x2,b0,b1,b2),

S4 method setClass prototype definition question
Dear list, this is not a problem report -- I would like to ask for advise what the recommended and safe way to perform the following is or what problems might arise in doing it differently. The question is: What is the recommended way of providing a default value in a prototype statement for a derived class for a slot provided from a parent class? I have first consulted the methods package

Output table from for loop
Hi, this might be basic but can't get it to work and it is hampering my R usage: #the loop is checking variance of rows, and cutting out rows with var>numVec[i] #I define outMat as object names I want to output to (does this make sense? how else #can I define sequential numbered output?) #numVec is numbers I use in the loop head(Counts) AN1 AN2 AN3 AN4 var GENE1

[LLVMdev] C Backend Ressurected
It provides a useful starting point, but I agree with Jim that it is not a complete solution and requires rework of the results in a lot cases. I think we could improve it further to address these issues but that work is nontrivial. If you are deciding between a quick and dirty implementation of a custom backend vs. the C backend, then the C backend is sometimes preferable in my experience

[LLVMdev] C Backend Ressurected
I don't know how good it is, but the applications seem obvious. e.g. compiling programs in any of a number of original formats to run natively on CPUs that have a working simple C compiler (maybe only K&R or C89) but don't have an LLVM back end. The source program could be in modern C, C++, or any other high level language or assembly language with a translator to LLVM. On Tue, Aug

Hello R users, I'm using SOM() to cluster a gene expression data set the syntax i used was dataGrid <- c(somgrid(xdim = 3, ydim = 3, topo = c("rectangular","hexagonal"))) dataClusters <- SOM(dataMatrix, grid = dataGrid) plot(dataClusters) it seems that this works just fine but the thing i can't figure out is how to determine where each data point has been

Fwd: cfl-aa
dear LLVMers, I am trying to use some of the LLVM alias analyses, and I would like to check two things with you: is scev-aa being maintained in LLVM 3.7? Second question: I run cfl-aa, and I got a very small number of pointer disambiguation (no alias) with it. My results for SPEC CINT 2006 follow below. Is this low number of no alias responses something to be excepted? Below the results that I

Why software fails in scientific research
I came across this notice of an upcoming webinar. The issues identified in the first paragraph below seem to me exactly those that the R project is designed to address. The claim that "most research software is barely fit for purpose compared to equivalent systems in the commercial world" seems to me not quite accurate! Comments! Unable to change file permissions on samba mount.
Hello, We share out user home dirs from a a solaris server via samba. On a windows machine I can change file permissions to files in my samba home dir. From OS X 10.4.2 all the files are at 700 and chmod does nothing to them. From the GUI get info just says that I can read and write. The smb.conf on the sun server has the following entries under the [home] section: browseable = no read only =
