best practice backup
Hi there,
I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr, lib, sbin, etc, var, home, root).
On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs.
Any opinions?

Turning root partition into a RAID array
I have a CentOS 4.2 system that was set up VERY quickly following the demise
of its former life as a CentOS 3 server - you don't want the full story, but
it had to be done quickly to get a company up and working following a slight
disaster involving an electrician, a portable appliance safety tester and a
pulled power cable - anyway, here's where I am at...
Everything is running fine but

Fiddling with software RAID1 : continue working with one of two disks failing?
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with software RAID1 on a spare PC with two
40 GB hard disks. Normally, on a desktop PC with only one hard disk, I
have a very simple partitioning scheme like this :
/dev/hda1 80 MB /boot ext2
/dev/hda2 1 GB swap
/dev/hda3 39 GB / ext3
Here's what I'd like to do. Partition a second hard disk (say, /dev/hdb)
with three

DRBD Problem
Hi all,
I've been wrestling with a problem with drdb and centos. I have
successfully created one drbd resource, but when I try the create a 2nd, I
get an error on one of the nodes:
Lower device is already mounted.
Command 'drbdsetup /dev/drbd1 disk /dev/hdd1 internal -1' terminated with
exit code 20
The partition is not mounted from fstab etc and is newly created with
parted after

Reinstalled Windows and GRUB - Cannot boot Linux - fstab and grub.conf errors?
Background: This is a dual boot (Windows XP and CentOS 5.2 (32 bit)
box. There were four (4) NTFS partitions. The C partition got full. I
deleted the 4 NTFS partitions and did a clean install of Windows XP,
into one (1) NTFS partition.
I knew that I would need to install GRUB again and I did that, using
the CentOS 5 Installation DVD. When I tried to boot into Linux, no
joy. this is the GRUB error

LVM repairing or back to regular ext3?
Can anyone point me in the right direction for correcting errors on an HD
when using LVM? I've tried e2fsck and indicates bad block. I've tried
with -b 8193, 16384, and 32768 and no good.
I've found some info about reiserfsck on google, but this utility doesn't
seem to be included in Centos4.3. I did find it on my old FC1 box.
I am thinking now I really should have went with

df report
'df' doesn't report my root partition, but does report my
/boot partition when both are mounted with <type> auto. But
when mounted with <type> ext3, both partitions are reported.
Details:
The system has mount-2.11m, tune2fs-1.25 and df (fileutils) 4.1
I just created an ext3 fs on a new Debian Woody install initially
running linux-2.2.19 on ext2, but upgraded to

Replacing a hard drive
I have a CentOS 4.4 system where all of the main filesystems are on a
single hard drive. This drive is starting to give some errors, so I got
a new (larger) drive to replace it with. What is the easiest way to
copy my filesystems over to the new drive?
I considered using dd, but I lose the extra capacity of the new drive
that way.
I tried using SystemImager, but it is giving me some errors.

creating disk images
I am familiar with using dd to create a disk image. dd if=/dev/hda1
of=myimge.img
However, is there a way to capture the entire disk image into a file.
I have 3 partitions:
hda1 /
hda2 swap
hda3 /home
and mbr
How can I wrap them all into 1 image file.
Thanks,

Attempting To Recover, fsck infinite looping on me
Hey all,
Had a power failure and subsequent ext3 disk corruptions. Attempting
to fix, but not working.
Its a 120 gig IDE disk, 3 partitions. /boot, /, and swap.
Basically can't boot up since the box can't get to the system files
in /usr/ or anything.
So I'm booting off of a FC2 disk 1 in recovery mode and trying to fix
the filesystem with e2fsck
The boot partition cleaned up

CentOS 5 Beta Dual Boot Problem
To test CentOS 5, I loaded from DVD adding it to
a system at home running Fedora Core 7 T2.
Partition Layout is:
/dev/hda1 - / for the RH7T2 system
/dev/hda2 - /home
/dev/hda3 - swap
/dev/hda4 - extended
/dev/hda5 - / for CentOS 5
The system loaded cleanly and gave me the
opportunity to tell grub about the other system.
CentOS boots fine. Grub Stage 2 will show me
both systems.

Software RAID & Ext3 v0.0.6b
I've just set up a brand new system with software raid1 (in degraded mode)
with one IDE 20GB drive, using kernel 2.2.19pre16 with ext3 0.0.6b.
It's split like this..
32MB /dev/hda1 /boot
2GB /dev/hda2 /
~18GB /dev/hda3 /home
all partitions are marked as 0xfd (autostart raid) with the patches from
http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches for 2.2.17. And I've made all the

PV guest kernel location
Still new at this and was wondering if someone could give me some
pointers. I have Xen 3.0.4 running great with 5 PV guests. I just
followed setup instructions from a few wiki pages. But the one thing I
noticed, is that the guest kernel is on the host. Below is the cfg file
for my mail server guest.

kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16.33-xen"

Installation problems with large mirrored drives
I am trying to install CentOS 4.6 to a pair of 750GB hard drives. I can
successfully install to either of the drives as a single drive, but when
I try to use both drives and mirror the partitions, I start having
problems. Anaconda crashes as it is trying to format the drives.
This is what I'm trying to create:
/dev/md0: 200MB, /boot
/dev/md1: 2GB, swap
