.Rprofile, .Rfirst, and .Rdata
Hi all, After a short hiatus away from R I have found that it's changed a bit. I used to keep a definition of .First in .Rprofile that did a couple of things on startup (load a couple of libraries). Now, I've discovered that when I change the definition of .First in .Rprofile it doesn't change anything when I start up, because .First is held over in .Rdata from the last session.

autoloading .RData files / .Rhistory file
NOTE: WinXP, R2.2.0 All, a while back I posted a question about using relative filereferencing. The responses have allowed me to successfully set up the following directory structure: ...\data\raw ...\data\derived ...\prog ...\lst ...\log In the \prog directory I have put an RGui.exe shortcut and "pointed it" at \prog as the "Start In" location. Assigning functions in Rprofile
I use the ugly hack shown below as my .Rprofile (mainly because I couldn't find any other way to spawn a new mozilla window on starting R or calling help.start(), but then send all the help html documents to that new window). With a recent change from a cvs checkout to the released 1.9.0 I find that the new hs() appears if there is nothing of that name in .RData, but if there is the old hs()

.Rprofile file
Hi, I want to use the .RProfile to set defaults such as text editor. Is this a file I need to create? Also, where should I put it? I tend to create .RData files for different projects, putting each in a different Windows (Vista) folder. Is one .Rprofile file created that any instance of R can access (I would imagine so)? Reading in a value of .Random.seed in .Rprofile
For reasons that are best known to myself [ ;-) ] I have a value of .Random.seed saved (via dput()) in a file ``.Random.seed.save''. In my .Rprofile I have the lines: .Random.seed <- dget(".Random.seed.save") Junk <- dget(".Random.seed.save") print(all.equal(.Random.seed,dget(".Random.seed.save")))

.Rprofile on MacOSX
I'm new to R, so apologies if the answer to my question is very obvious to everyone else! I use the carbon version of R (1.5.1), not the Darwin version. After a bit of a battle, I'm getting to grips with using R, and really getting to like it, but I'm still having trouble customising startup the way I'd like it. Reading ?Startup, I see that I can specify some commands to be run

hiding/protecting utility functions in .Rprofile
[Env: WinXp, R 2.9.2] In my .Rprofile, I define a number of utility functions I'd like to have available in my R session, but don't want them to be *normally* listed by ls(), or more importantly, saved if I save my session variables/functions. How can I do this? -- Michael Friendly Email: friendly AT yorku DOT ca Professor, Psychology Dept. York University Voice: 416

MakeActiveBinding help needed
Hi, I wanted a Q&D way to open a new graphics window but keep the focus in the console window (under Windows and the Rgui), so I wrote a line into my Rprofile.site file as follows: invisible(makeActiveBinding('newdev', function(...) dev.new(restoreConsole=T), .GlobalEnv)) (That is all on one line, incase the mailer re-parses it). This gives me a command "newdev" which

.Rprofile is being executed twice
Hi, After updating to R 2.7, my .Rprofile executes twice on startup. I confirmed this by putting in the following line: print("starting .Rprofile...") When I start R, I see: [1] "starting .Rprofile..." [1] "starting .Rprofile..." This seems like the obverse of the following FAQ:

problem with restore and some .RData
Hi, I have problem with the restore function in some .RData using R 1.9.0 Look the error: [ronaldo at zeus RAnalise]$ R ... Error: object 'family' not found whilst loading namespace 'MASS' Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData But if I load this .RData with the load() function all objects are recovered. When to use RProfile.site or .Rprofile
I would appreciate some advice on what the preferred contents of RProfile.site vs. .Rprofile should be. A .First() function can reside in either one, but is it preferred to place it in .Rprofile? I currently use .First() in .Rprofile files placed in separate directories used for different RStudio projects. Thank you [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Startup on Windows 2000
I am having difficulty coming to grips with Appendix B.2 of the otherwise very useful "An Introduction to R" and the related help file for Startup. I am running RGui 1.6.0 on a Windows 2000 machine from the default installation. How the concepts discussed in B.2 and the Startup help file relate to what I see on my machine is something of a mystery. I quote from the Startup file:

problem loading packages (PR#559)

.Rprofile files (was R newbie configuration)
Thanks a lot. setHook is Currently not in my knowledge set But it's great to save these Thing so I can look them up When I feel more comfortable. Just to add to that Stata versus R discussion : I believe, anyone who uses any other package than R, is probably missing out in the long run. It's truly unbelievable what has been done here. R devel [and R 2.14.1 patched]: R CMD build now sources ~/.Rprofile
I'd like to follow up on this one. It may be that I have misunderstood something, but on both R devel (2012-02-22 r58452) and R 2.14.1 patched (2012-02-18 r58394) I can't seem to avoid loading ~/.Rprofile when I run 'R CMD <cmd>', e.g. R CMD build. For me, the loading of ~/.Rprofile by 'R CMD' started a few weeks ago, and I haven't seen it before. More details

Execution of Rprofile.site
Hi everyone. I have recently installed R 2.14.1 on my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop. I am attempting to include some favourite functions in the Rprofile.site file to run at R start-up as I did with my previous 32-bit XP machine. I have edited the Rprofile.site file in "C:\Program Files\R\R-2.14.1\etc\" but the added code doesn't seem to be executed when I run R, whether through Tinn-R

Startup Files (RProfile) and R-Aqua
Hello, I'm having some difficulty understanding the documentation relative to the startup files with R-Aqua 2.0.1 for Mac OS X. Specifically, I'm wondering: where does R search for the startup files (my home directory at Users:<me>:?); how should they be named (.RProfile will be treated by Mac OS X as a system file and be hidden, so I'm wondering if it should just be
