Problems with R-0.65.0
Hello,
I installed the new release 0.65.0 of R on our local Solaris system. As I
already (and sucessfully) installed the 0.64.0 and 0.64.1 version of R, I
hadn't had any trouble during the installation. But as I've started R in
order to see the demo I've got horizontal and vertical lines goint to the
left and top of the X11 window at each tick (demo ("graphics")). This

What should dnorm(0, 0, -Inf) return?
Hi,
Apropos of a recent Inf question, I've previously wondered if dnorm "does the right thing" with
dnorm(0, 0, -Inf)
which gives zero. Should that be zero or NaN (or NA)?
The help says "'sd < 0' is an error and returns 'NaN'" and since -Inf < 0 is TRUE, then... is this a bug?

What should dnorm(0, 0, -Inf) return?
Yes, that looks like a bug and an easily fixable one too.
However, I spy another issue: Why do we check the !R_FINITE(x) && mu == x before checking for sd < 0 ? The difference is whether we
return ML_NAN;
or
ML_ERR_return_NAN;
but surely negative sd should always be an error?
I'd be inclined to do
if (sigma < 0) ML_ERR_return_NAN;
if(!R_FINITE(sigma)) return R_D__0;

ISNAN() broken? in ver 2.x on MacOS X
I have a problem building an extension using ISNAN() on R version 2.0.x.
In R 1.9.1 Arith.h and Rmath.h contained code like

formatReal()-bug (or Is there anybody out there w/o IEEE754?)
On a system with IEEE_754 undefined, I run into an bug, when the value
of an element of the first argument (e.g., x[0]) of formatReal() is NA:
1. (format.c:235) if (!R_FINITE ..) gives nanflag=1 (!naflag remains 0)
2. (format.c:272..288) *m gets an value of -2147483643 (from the format
fiddling, should not matter to us)
3. (format.c:289) because naflag is zero, m does not

Ancient C /Fortran code linpack error
In my package 'glmmML' I'm using old C code and linpack in the
optimizing procedure. Specifically, one part of the code looks like this:
F77_CALL(dpoco)(*hessian, &bdim, &bdim, &rcond, work, info);
if (*info == 0){
F77_CALL(dpodi)(*hessian, &bdim, &bdim, det, &job);

This usually works OK, but with an ill-conditioned data

R-beta: 0.62.1 make error on Linux
I get an error trying to make R 0.62.1 on Linux (2.0.30 kernel upgraged
from RH 4.1). I think I saw this mentioned before but haven't been able
find it. Does anyone know the fix?

Optimizing C code
Hi the list,
I need to write some efficient distances function, so I read the code
for the Euclidean distance.
I do not understand the purpose of the line 11 : if x[i] and y[i] are
not NA (line 9), can dev be NA ?

I would have hoped for 0. The problem seems to be specifically for negative
"digits". This is in 1.3.1 on Solaris 2.6 (full description at bottom).

Use of all/any
all/any coerce their arguments to logical (if possible). I've added a
warning in R-devel if coercion is from something other than integer.
This arose because it is easy to make a slip and write all(X) > 0 rather
than all(X > 0): thanks to Bill Dunlap for bringing that to my attention.
However, it has been useful in detecting quite a few other things:

RFC: hexadecimal constants and decimal points
These are some points stimulated by reading about C history (and
related in their implementation).
1) On some platforms

points(*, pch=NA) does *not* not draw the point (PR#6876)
We say in ?points that 'pch' (among others) can be set to NA
for omitting a point.
While this works in cases where there's at least one point left
to draw, it fails in a simple case like this :

This only happens if 'file' is a text connection, and is the expected
behaviour in that case: you cannot capture an incomplete line to a text
connection.
There seems no reason to break the documented behaviour in other cases to
change something that you consider to a bug when file=NULL and the user
does not produce complete output. It would be possible to make use of
isIncomplete()
