Maths in R documentation (PR#523)
The document R-exts contains the following example of using
mathematics in R documentation.
\deqn{p(x) = {\lambda^x\ \frac{e^{-\lambda}}{x!}}
{p(x) = lambda^x exp(-lambda)/x!}
There is a syntax error in there, but that's not my point.
The problem is that using "R CMD Rd2dvi" I find that putting
the alternate forms of the equation on top of each other doesn't
work.

R-beta: Still want restart() in R
People's valiant efforts to sort out CODA aside, the burning question remains:
has anybody made any headway with restart()? or any other way (and there may
well be better) of trapping `fatal' errors from calls within a function.

getting started on Bayesian analysis
I am an economist who decided it's high time that I learned some
Bayesian statistics. I am following An Introduction to Modern
Bayesian Econometrics by T. Lancaster.
The book recommends using BUGS, but I wonder if there are any
alternatives which are free software and fully integrated to R (which
I have been using for more than two years for numerical computations.)
I would like to learn

mcmcsamp shortening variable names; how can i turn this feature off?
I have written a function called mcsamp() that is a wrapper that runs
mcmcsamp() and automatically monitors convergence and structures the
inferences into vectors and arrays as appropriate.
But I have run into a very little problem, which is that mcmcsamp()
shortens the variable names. For example:

yet another lmer question
I've been trying to keep track with lmer, and now I have a couple of
questions with the latest version of Matrix (0.995-4). I fit 2 very
similar models, and the results are severely rounded in one case and
rounded not at all in the other.

How do you create a "MCMC" object?
I have been running a Gibbs Sampler to estimate levels of efficiency in the
Louisiana Shrimp Industry. I created a matrix (samp) where I stored the
results of each iteration for 86 variables. I run 10,000 iterations. So, the
matrix samp is 10,000 x 86. I want to use the gelman-rubin test to check for
convergence. To do that, I need at least two chains. If I run second chain

Matrices given to pt? [was: [R] for loops and counters]
Hi, people.
I was a bit intrigued by the message quoted below. Indeed, if pt() is
given a matrix, it returns a matrix. Should this feature be documented?
?pt speaks about "a vector of quantiles", and says nothing about the
type of what it returns.
The same might presumably apply to other distribution-related functions.

bayesm - question about 'rscaleUsage function'
Hi all,
I have managed to get the r-scale usage algorithm to work, but I need to obtain the final results from this. As I understand it, this code is designed to generate a matrix after processing and store it somewhere?????
Here is the code.....
I get this part of the code, it all makes sense.

R package RPMs for Fedora
Hi all,
Three months ago, I wrote to Martyn Plummer (to his Warwick email) and
offered my help to maintain and modernize this [1] rather updated
README, but received no response. Does anyone know how to reach him,
or maybe I should contact CRAN directly?

fix and a patch is supplied below. I hope this is useful for the
current source (if these haven't been fixed already :)

R CMD check
I have been checking my package coda with the current R-devel
using "R CMD check". As usual, this has uncovered a large number
of errors and inconsistencies in my documentation, for which I
am very grateful.
The only problem I have is with code/documentation mismatches when I
have written a method for a generic function, e.g.

R-beta: R has underflows on sparc-redhat-linux
Hi --
I'm trying to package R for inclusion on some upcoming Red Hat
Powertools distribution. I have started with the 0.61 version
packaged by Martyn Plummer <plummer at iarc.fr> (Thanks Martyn!)
and have upgraded to 0.62-2. I have succeeded in running R demo's
on i386-redhat-linux-gnu, and now I am also trying to get the
alpha and sparc versions working.

Installing R in Fedora Core 4
R is included in Fedora Extras. You can skip downloading Extras and updating the packages on the CD by using:
yum index | grep R
and installing the half dozen or so individual packages that will be listed. The number of packages may be mildly annoying but if you install this way you will be notified of R updates along with all of your other security and application updates through the Red Hat

Help with syntax error
Hi,
I have written boxplot commands of this form before, but I don''t quite understand why the function call is reporting a syntax error in this instance. All parameters passed to the function are strings.
Thanks in advance.
