How to write a printcap entry for remote printer
I am sharing some printers attached to Win95 boxes, and would like to be able to do more than connect from Linux with smbclient and print via translate. I would like to be able to specify a printcap entry for these so as to be able to print from pine or lynx or Netscape (when I get X running here at work). I haven't found anything in Samba docs or LDP docs yet to tell me how to write such

Representation of data in libraries
At present the example data sets in R libraries are to be given as expressions that can be read directly into R. For example, the acid.R file in the main library looks like acid <- data.frame( carb = c(0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.9), optden = c(0.086, 0.269, 0.446, 0.538, 0.626, 0.782), row.names = paste(1:6)) This is great when you have only a few observations. I have one example data

R-alpha: nlm and gradients
At present the documentation for nlm refers the reader to Dennis and Schnabel for details on the algorithms. It also states that the function is liable to change. Can anyone tell me if the current version of nlm uses only function values or if it can use gradients and Hessians when they are available? I would like to get an idea of how difficult it would be to port the development versions of

Netscape profile scripts?
A while back there was a thread in which many people were discussing how to make Netscape work with roaming profiles. There was some talk about how this would require a script to modify the registry, etc. I just talked to one of the NS programmers who said that the problem would be fixed and even enhanced in a version 4.5. He didn't say whether the 4.5 code was going to be an internal or

Netscape Profiles
There was a posting on Netscape Profiles mapped to network drives that I was hoping someone could help me with. Other than setting the key for password encryption, I've never messed with the NT registry keys. I see this folder: \Registry\Machine\SOFTWARE\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Users = But making this part, I could use some help: CurrentUser = Default

Netscape/Mozilla: Windows plugins via Wine?
Many useful Netscape plugins don't come in Linux versions. Is it possible to make my Linux copy of Netscape use Windows-compiled plugins? If so, how?

R-beta: netscape/R interaction
Using netscape 4.03 (or 2.x or 3.x)/ R-0.62.1 with SPARC Solaris 2.4: when netscape is running for help, graphics in R quit with "Color allocation error". Closing netscape removes the problem. netscape does not interfere with other X11 imaging programs including ghostscript and ImageMagick except that it increases the contrast in my mailer windows slightly. (netscape does block

"ifdef"'ing R/S code
I should have saved the messages about this but I didn't. Can someone remind me of what function or object to check from within a function to determine if you are running R? I need to make some changes in code according to whether I am running it under R or under S and I would prefer to keep one source tree. Thomas Lumley: I read your web page on porting S code to R. It looks very good.

How to set Netscape enviroment on Samba home drive ?

You get this kind of stuff by default with roaming profiles.( ie user.dat or ntuser.dat ) If you are referring to netscape 4 then just point the profile to the home directory (mapped to a consistent drive

help.start in R-1.7.0 with Netscape 7.0.
I'm experiencing a new and annoying phenomenon which seems to consist of an unfortunate interaction between R-1.7.0 and netscape version 7. When I invoke help.start(), a netscape window duly appears with the browser pointed at the file .../R/doc/html/index.html as one would hope and expect. However if I then ask for help on a function, e.g. > help(glm) the help does NOT get displayed

help.start() setup with netscape
System info: Mandrake 9.0 R Version 1.6.1 ESS 5.1.21 Emacs 21.2.1 ------------------- Colleagues I understand that help.start() search function works with netscape and although it may also work with latest versions of mazilla it doesn't seem to with the one I'm using (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826). help.start() problem with netscape 6.2.2 (was: R 1.5.0 RPM's for Mandrake)
I've installed Netscape 6.2.2 on Mdk82, but have not had much luck with help.start() (R-1.5.0 compiled from source). When I do help.start(), it just starts up netscape with the default home page, rather than the R help page. Doing ?<anything> at the R prompt starts up yet another netscape instance, but still no R help. Anyone knows why, or even better, how to solve this? Regards,

Message display corrupted or missing in Netscape 7.0 and Mozilla 1.3
Hi, a few days ago, we switched our site from pop3 to imap. We are running about 20 users with Netscape 7.0 on a FreeBSD-4.8 Server . I installed dovecot 0.9.99.1 via the freebsd-ports collection, which was as easy as make install and start dovecot. Our users mailboxes are still standart mbox format in /var/mail/(user), as it is default in Freebsd. Now we suffer from a realy ugly problem,

Bug#168259: r-base-core: help.start() assumes netscape is installed (PR#2275)

Trying to follow the sample To best of my knowledge, this R feature dates from a time when Netscape was essentially the only browser out there. It also had a most useful feature: you could attach new request (resulting in a new "frame" in X11 / window manager
