R-beta: survival4
Hmm... I have the same problem on hpux10.20. I put the additional libs into a
subdir called contrib, and R INSTALL from there. I have R-0.61.1 Alpha Dec21
1997. Without restored data they work OK.

Large discrepancies in the same object being saved to .RData
Hi developers,
After some investigation I have found there can be large discrepancies in the same object being saved as an external "xx.RData" file. The immediate repercussion of this is the possible increased size of your .RData workspace for no apparent reason.
The function and its three scenarios below highlight these discrepancies. Note that the object being returned is exactly

Dear R team,
I had a strange problem that appeared suddenly, and which I'd like to
to mention in case it is of interest (although I suspect that I
may have unwittingly done something dumb: if so please accept my apology)

Tip: Working directory in titlebar
I hope others may find this useful. I use R in many different
directories. By adding the following line to the .Rprofile file:
utils:::setWindowTitle(paste("-",getwd()))
the titlebar of each R instance shows the directory from which it was
started. I have tested this with rterm.exe and rgui.exe under Windows
and with RECENT versions of R only.

R-beta: dyn.load() on a Linux Red Hat 3.0.3 system
I'm trying to install R on a Red Hat 3.0.3 system, but cannot seem to
get dyn.load() to fuction.
The configure script says:
checking for dlopen in -ldl... no
And compiling fails at
../lib/libunix.a
Any suggestions? What should I do to be able to use dyn.load()? I
cannot upgrade the system to a higher version of Red Hat, but I will
probably get away with installing some new

Summary: Changing workspace from within an R session
Thanks to Frank Harrell, Brian Ripley, Andy Liaw, Jeff Laake and Sean Davis
for their usefull comments regarding "navigation" between valid R
directories.
Jeff recommanded the Mark Bravington package that can be found at:
(ftp://ftp.marine.csiro.au/software/bravington/). I looked at the package
and found that it can do a lot more than what I asked for. At this time I

difficulties with the save.image() function
Dear list,
I've had difficulty saving my workspace to an .RData file.
This causes considerable frustration as it means that I have to regenerate
my analysis every time I want to update it. For microarray data in
particular, this can be quite time consuming.
I'm saving my data to a network folder on my system in Windows XP, something
like an "H:\" drive or a "P:\"

Relationship between dyn.load and library.dynam
I am a little confused about the relationship between library.dynam and

Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData
Hello,
I am unable to start an R session by double-clicking on an existing
.RData file from the Windoze file explorer.
A dialogue appears with the message
"Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData",
and I notice in the R Console the last few lines are:
"Loading required package: R2HTML

error in function () : unused argument(s) (1:43)"

RE workspace vs. image
As an alternative to the use of multiple shortcus to gain entry to different
R environments on WIndows platforms I would like to suggest the use of two R
functions written by my colleague John Miyamoto. I have taken the liberty of
attaching their definitions to this message. Their efficient use is based on
adopting the following regimen or something like it: (1) at startup attach

double-click in RData file versus load( file )
hello all,
when I start up the R and I execute o follow code:

R-beta: R-0.61.3 released
I've just put up R-0.61.3.tgz and R-0.61.2-0.61.3.diff.gz for
anonymous FTP on ftp.stat.auckland.ac.nz.
As usual: Don't get it from there unless you are in a desperate hurry.
It will migrate to the CRAN sites within a day or two. (See the FAQ
for the list of CRAN sites. And see the footer for the FAQ location....)
This release mainly fixes a couple of embarassing bugs in 0.61.2. It

Loading of namespace on load of .Rdata (was strange behaviour of load)
Last week Giovanni Parrinello posted a message asking why various packages were loaded when he loaded an .Rdata file. Brian Ripley replied saying he thought it was because the saved workspace contained a reference to the namespace of ipred. (Correspondence copied below).
This begs the question: how did the reference to the namespace of ipred come to be in the .Rdata file? Brian did say it is

Excluding objects from save.image
When dealing with object holding pointers that are only valid during a
single session, it would be convenient to exclude them from being saved
with the session image. (I am assuming that `quit` calls `save.image`
before quitting or is it internal?) Currently they are saved with the
pointer converted to NULL. Its a bit surprising for users not realizing the
object is no longer valid.

bug: sticky symbol refs? (PR#9555)
Hello. What happens in the following is that I create two simple functions, f and g, on the workspace. Then I
replace g. When I then call f, it uses the old version of g. Now clearly, the circumstances for this to happen
must be quite special and rare. But I'd say they're not pathological. It seems to require two things: 1) masked versions
of f and g on a search position lower down the

Cannot re-start R after bus error
Hi,
I ran a program that was exhausting the (unix) server's available memory. I got a bus error and then chose to save and quit workspace (option 4).
That may not have been a smart idea - when I try to use R now, I get the error message:
Error in load(name, envir = .GlobalEnv) :
ReadItem: unknown type 0, perhaps written by later version of R
Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in
