.Rprofile, .Rfirst, and .Rdata
Hi all,
After a short hiatus away from R I have found that it's changed a bit.
I used to keep a definition of .First in .Rprofile that did a couple of
things on startup (load a couple of libraries). Now, I've discovered
that when I change the definition of .First in .Rprofile it doesn't
change anything when I start up, because .First is held over in .Rdata
from the last session.

MakeActiveBinding help needed
Hi,
I wanted a Q&D way to open a new graphics window but keep the focus in
the console window (under Windows and the Rgui), so I wrote a line into
my Rprofile.site file as follows:
invisible(makeActiveBinding('newdev', function(...)
dev.new(restoreConsole=T), .GlobalEnv))
(That is all on one line, incase the mailer re-parses it). This gives me
a command "newdev" which

autoloading .RData files / .Rhistory file
NOTE: WinXP, R2.2.0
All,
a while back I posted a question about using relative filereferencing.
The responses have allowed me to successfully set up the following
directory structure:
...\data\raw
...\data\derived
...\prog
...\lst
...\log
In the \prog directory I have put an RGui.exe shortcut and "pointed it"
at \prog as the "Start In" location. In the same

Execute R with *.RData argument
Dear R developers,
i would like to start R with a *.RData argument under Linux.
Something like R -f /home/user/workspace.RData
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

.Rprofile results in corruption of .RData? (PR#346)
It could be that the following may be due to something wrong that I managed
to do (I cannot think what...) but I submit this report in case it is something
that you want to know about (I have solved the problem by removing .Rprofile as
I describe below).
1. After compiling/installing R 0.90 (an uneventful process), it
worked perfectly the first time, and it read .RData written by the

vanilla session in R Gui or RStudio
As Jeff says, it might be that you have a ~/.Rprofile file with
instructions to load packages when R starts. It could also be that
you have a .RData file, which is saved if you answer yes to:

objects you had when you saved it. If there are objects associated
with packages, then that will

Can you be more specific about what conditions cause R to automatically load a package when a .RData file is loaded? My experience has actually been the opposite.

Assigning functions in Rprofile
I use the ugly hack shown below as my .Rprofile (mainly because I couldn't
find any other way to spawn a new mozilla window on starting R or calling
help.start(), but then send all the help html documents to that new
window).
With a recent change from a cvs checkout to the released 1.9.0 I find that
the new hs() appears if there is nothing of that name in .RData, but if
there is the old hs()

problem with restore and some .RData
Hi,
I have problem with the restore function in some .RData using R 1.9.0
Look the error:
[ronaldo at zeus RAnalise]$ R
...
Error: object 'family' not found whilst loading namespace 'MASS'
Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData
But if I load this .RData with the load() function all objects are recovered.

Reading in a value of .Random.seed in .Rprofile
For reasons that are best known to myself [ ;-) ] I have a value
of .Random.seed
saved (via dput()) in a file ``.Random.seed.save''.
In my .Rprofile I have the lines:
.Random.seed <- dget(".Random.seed.save")
Junk <- dget(".Random.seed.save")
print(all.equal(.Random.seed,dget(".Random.seed.save")))

R-alpha: RData in batch
Just a word to mention that I have lost 2 hours yesterday to find out why
R refused to use a function from a package calling C-code.
R invariably answered that the C code was not in the load table (something
like this). I have tried everything (or nearly) to solve my problem
knowing that this same package used to work on my computer at the
university.
Finally, I found out that running the same

Startup on Windows 2000
I am having difficulty coming to grips with Appendix B.2 of the
otherwise very useful "An Introduction to R" and the related help file
for Startup. I am running RGui 1.6.0 on a Windows 2000 machine from the
default installation. How the concepts discussed in B.2 and the Startup
help file relate to what I see on my machine is something of a mystery.
I quote from the Startup file:

.Rprofile file
Hi,
I want to use the .RProfile to set defaults such as text editor. Is
this a file I need to create? Also, where should I put it? I tend to
create .RData files for different projects, putting each in a different
Windows (Vista) folder. Is one .Rprofile file created that any
instance of R can access (I would imagine so)?
Thanks,
Walt

Can't load workspaces
I've seen a number of issues with the loading of workspaces discussed previously, but here's another one... I simply can't load any saved workspace at all... Here's an example, starting with an empty workspace and creating a single variable "a".

dump.frames in non-interactive mode
Hi,
recover() resorts to dump.frames() when called in non-interactive
sessions. However dump.frames() still puts the dump into last.dump
object and not into a file, which brings the question of how to get hold
of the object once the session terminates.
I guess the supposed answer is that last.dump is saved in .Rdata once R
exits. However I find it more convenient on day-to-day basis to use

R newbie configuration
I think I did enough reading on my

And most of this afternoon )
to not feel uncomfortable asking
for confirmation of my understanding of this startup stuff.
Obviously, the startup process is more complicated
Than below but, for my R newbie purposes,
It seems like I can think of the startup process as follows :
