Summary of mails concerning R help system
Hi,
here's a short summary of all the mails I got concerning the R help
system during the last days ... I really want to have all open
questions in this list, so if I forgot your most important topic
please forgive (and remind me again) ... it's probably only because of
lack of time such that I had to compile the list in a hurry ...
Ok, here we go:

Extending www.r-project.org features with a Wiki (PR#8744)
Full_Name: Victor Anyakin

Submission from: (NULL) (212.109.44.52)
This is an enhancement request,
probably, some sort of a Wiki engine could be installed on the web site, or some
other system, which would cover some basic information about various aspectes of
R.
Currently, I am trying to find some information about GUI application
development on R. A number of various projects

R-beta:0.61.1 Problem with "make docs"
The problem is the following
# make docs
Make: Don't know how to make ../src/library/*/man/*.Rd. Stop.
*** Exit 1 (ignored)

I am using a DEC alpha 200/4/233 with Digital Unix 3.2D
My previous version of R was R-0.50-a1. I have installed around 3 or 4
previous versions on the same system and never had a problem (but, then
the Makefile was very different). The first make to compile

Help System (PR#428)
Dear R developers,
sorry about the empty bug-report that I seem to have filed earlier.
(I wrote it via `bug.report()' from within R using `emacsclient'. I
wasn't aware that I have to save the file after pressing C-x # and
before sending it.) Hopefully this time it will work......
I noticed the following problem with the on-line help system:
1) I start an R session and type

R-beta: Submissions to CRAN

which looks like:

R-alpha: CRAN source/contrib
I've put all ``current'' add-on packages into CRAN's source/contrib tree
and created an INDEX file (attached below). As you can see, currently
we have
acepack
bootstrap
ctest
date
e1071
fracdiff
gee
jpn
snns
splines
survival4
(Yes, e1071 and jpn are new ... more on the latter in a later mail.)
In the near future, I am hoping for the following:

R-beta: mlbench-0.1 --- machine learning benchmark problems
I've made a package from some benchmark datasets for use with R and
uploaded it to CRAN.
Here's the Index entry:

A collection of artificial and real-world machine learning
benchmark problems, including, e.g., the boston housing
data from the UCI repository.

R-beta: Corrections to documentation
Thanks to Peter Dalgaard's message, I learned a bit more about the 'par'
function and rewrote my HTML help file accordingly. Is it appropriate
to submit such changes somewhere to improve the documentation? I would
also be willing to write some missing documentation as well.

R-alpha: RData in batch
Just a word to mention that I have lost 2 hours yesterday to find out why
R refused to use a function from a package calling C-code.
R invariably answered that the C code was not in the load table (something
like this). I have tried everything (or nearly) to solve my problem
knowing that this same package used to work on my computer at the
university.
Finally, I found out that running the same

R-alpha: system() ok -- is.R() function
Martin
Your revisions to my S--R compatability code suggest that tempfile() is
in R after 0.49. I don't find that to be the case. It requires code from
Friedrich Leisch which still has to be added as of 0.50 alpha3.

R-alpha: data in contributed packages
I know, we've discussed this several times in the good old days days
of the R-testers list :-), but the problem is still unsolved.
I want to include Tibshirani's data in my port of the bootstrap
package, but we still have no way of including data in a clean way.
IMHO we should have a subdirectory of $RHOME/data for each library,
e.g.
$RHOME/data/base
$RHOME/data/bootstrap

R-alpha: Proposal for a new R doc source format
With help by Kurt and Martin I have written a short proposal for a new
R doc source format that should be easier to parse using, e.g.,
perl. There should be especially a clearer distinction between text
and keywords.
Here we go, please make comments, corrections, etc.
Best,
Fritz

So, there still is no "R beta" around....
- If I didn't know R, would I use a statistics software, if it was still
in alpha testing state?
- Is this really what we want to tell people about R?
More to the point:
I think, we could
