R-alpha: Bug in tapply in the Windows version of September
The function tapply is not working in the Windows version of R=20 (Version 0.50 Beta (Sept 29, 1997)) In tapply <- function (x, INDEX, FUN=3DNULL, simplify=3DTRUE, ...)=20 ... The part: if (simplify && all(unlist(lapply(ans, length)) =3D=3D 1)) { ans <- unlist(ans, recursive =3D FALSE) names(ans)<-namelist[[1]] return(ans) } should be replaced by if (simplify

by inconsistently strips class - with fix
summary: The function 'by' inconsistently strips class from the data to which it is applied. quick reason: tapply strips class when simplify is set to TRUE (the default) due to the class stripping behaviour of unlist. quick answer: This can be fixed by invoking tapply with simplify=FALSE, or changing tapply to use do.call(c instead of unlist executable example:

Collapsing data frame; aggregate() or better function?
Hello r-help, I am trying to collapse or aggregate 'some' of a data frame. A very simplified version of my data frame looks like: > tester trip set num sex lfs1 lfs2 1 313 15 5 M 2 3 2 313 15 3 F 1 2 3 313 17 1 M 0 1 4 313 17 2 F 1 1 5 313 17 1 U 1 0 And I want to omit sex from the picture and just get an addition of num,

R-alpha: R 0.50.a3: adj?
Not sure if I already reported this ... it seems that as of 0.50.a2, the adj graphics parameter is completely ignored. Try e.g. plot(1:10) title(main = "This is a title", adj = 0) title(main = "This is a title", adj = 1) No difference ... -k =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- r-devel mailing list -- Read

R-alpha: R 0.50.a3 problem with `make tests'
Not really important, but ... `make tests' fails if a user's .Rprofile asks for libraries which are not found by the binary in the compilation tree (yes I know, we're here perhaps the only ones who use private libraries ...). Perhaps we should have options --no-site-file --no-init-file which inhibit the loading of a global and a user's init file? -k

a patch to tapply (PR#1186)
Though tapply(x, factor, fun, simplify =TRUE) should be equivalent to sapply(split(x, factor), fun, simplify=TRUE), note simplify=TRUE, it is not so if fun() returns a vector rather than a scalar, e.g. > tapply(1:6, c(0,0,0,1,1,1), function(x) c(min=min(x), max=max(x)), simplify=TRUE) $"0" min max 1 3 $"1" min max 4 6 > sapply(split(1:6, c(0,0,0,1,1,1)),

A suggestion for an amendment to tapply
Dear R-developers, when tapply() is invoked on factors that have empty levels, it returns NA. This behaviour is in accord with the tapply documentation, and is reasonable in many cases. However, when FUN is sum, it would also seem reasonable to return 0 instead of NA, because "the sum of an empty set is zero, by definition." I'd like to raise a discussion of the possibility of an

R-alpha: R-0.50-a3(+) Method despatching bug ?
It is very wierd... Can some of you confirm the following behavior ? It is a new bug (feature ?) which was not yet in 0.49 ... noquote <- function(obj) { ## constructor for a useful "minor" class if(!inherits(obj,"noquote")) class(obj) <- c(class(obj),"noquote") obj } "[.noquote" <- function (x, subs) structure(unclass(x)[subs], class =

Groups and bwplot
Dear R-users, A while ago, Deepayan Sarkar suggested some code that uses the group argument in bwplot to create some 'side-by-side' boxplots (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2010-February/230065.html). The example he gave was relatively specific and I wanted to generalize his approach into a function. Unfortunately, I seem to have some issues passing the correct arguments to the

R-alpha: Version 0.50-a1 patches
A set of patches for R-0.50-a1 is now available as ftp://stat.auckland.ac.nz/pub/R/R-0.50-a1.patch1.gz The patches mainly fix problems reported since R-0.50-a1 but some older problems are also fixed. Here is the list of changes. Ross o Many subsetting and mutation problems with the new "expression" type have now been fixed. o When ask=T is set in par() the user is instructed

String in data frame
hello, how can take the string in the data frame. right now i have a table that create as a data frame and stored in the file called "data.xls" and now i want to read data frame as a table in my another r program, i used the following command: the first column of the data frame is just one number called "num", but the second one a list of string, called "name". d

Problem assigning "NA" as a level name in a list
I want to generate a list (called "dataList" below) where each of its levels is named. These names are assigned to nameList, which contains all possible permutations of size two taking letters from a larger alphabet, e.g., "aa",...,"Fd",..,"Z1",... One of these permutations is the character string "NA". It seems that when I try to name one

R-alpha: R-0.50-a3: [logical, drop = FALSE] -- bug in R (and S-plus)
This is a bug both in R and S-plus (in R it's "worse"), I think. Look at this : ma <- cbind(1,1:8); logi <- rep(c(T,F),4) ma[logi,] ##> [,1] [,2] ##> [1,] 1 1 ##> [2,] 1 3 ##> [3,] 1 5 ##> [4,] 1 7 ##-- now the same with [ , drop = FALSE] ## R (-0.50-a3) : ma[logi, drop = F] ##>> Error: invalid subscript type ##

problem subsetting of a reference class
I am trying to define subset operator for a reference class and hitting some problem i am unable to diagnose. To give an example, here is a toy class generator that is a wrapper around a list tmpGEN<-setRefClass("TMP", fields=list( namelist="list" )) tmpGEN$methods('add'=function(obj, name){ namelist[[name]]<<-obj })

Problem to remove loops in a routine
Dear R-users, I have written the following code to generate some trellis plots. It works perfectly fine except that it is quite slow when it is apply to my typical datasets (over several thousands of lines). I believe the problem comes from the loops I am using to subset my data.frame. I read in the archives that the tapply function is often more efficient than a loop in R. Unfortunately ,

Calculating sum of letter values
Hi all If I have a string, say "ABCDA", and I want to convert this to the sum of the letter values, e.g. A -> 1 B -> 2 etc, so "ABCDA" = 1+2+3+4+1 = 11 Is there an elegant way to do this? Trying something like which(LETTERS %in% unlist(strsplit("ABCDA", ""))) is not quite correct, as it does not count repeated characters. I guess what I need is

[Bridge] brctl uses incorrect sysfs path
Hi, I noticed that brctl (or more accurately, libbridge) is using the wrong path when doing various lookups in sysfs: e.g. /sys/class/net/brXXX/stp_state when it should use /sys/class/net/brXXX/bridge/stp_state. This doesn't cause any problems on most systems as it falls back to the ioctl when the sysfs attempt fails; however the ioctl method is apparently deprecated. I believe the
