SOLVED: Re: Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: Impossible to restore WinXP?
Some thoughts, for anyone faced with this type of problem on a dual
boot box in the future: My first thought was to try to Rescue the
WinXP Spanish language installation that came on the Dell Dimension
2400, out of the Dell factory. Later, I decided to wipe the entire
drive, since I now have a WinXP English language Restore CD and I
wanted to redo CentOS5, so I would have room to experiment with

Ross: In addition to coming up with another slick way to fix this box,
which I truly appreciate, you came up with the below:

Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: Impossible to restore WinXP?
We rarely use M$ Windows, but I let my daughter surf pbskids.org while
using Windows and a Trojan Horse modified or deleted the user32.dll
file. I found the instructions on the Microsoft Support web site, and
it would be very easy for me to expand a new copy of user32.dll if I
could get the MS WinXP CD to work. It boots OK, I press a key so it
will search hardware and it then has hard drive

That's probably "a good thing". You don't know what else was changed
(e.g., registry entries, etc.) that won't keep the system from

Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: ImpossibletorestoreWinXP?
I should have asked how big your setup was currently.
Oh well, yes the Windows apps take a while to install, been there myself.
If I were to re-do the whole drive, not knowing it's size I might do it as such:
/dev/sda - standard 100MB boot
/dev/sdb - 90% of remaining space as an LVM PV
/dev/sdc - remaining space as future Windows volume
In the LVM VG formed from /dev/sdb, create a / lv of

dual boot box: winxp & centos 5: impossible to restorewinxp? -- antair restored
Have you disconnected all your usb hardware before trying the repair? I've repaired my box more times than I can count and the only time I've seen lots of hdd activity is when I had some weird hardware attached.

Partioning Error: Dual Boot, WinXP & CentOS5, 27 GB Free space; my error is?
Hello: Starting Friday afternoon, I blew away the installations on the
three (3) boxes we use as Desktops. On two (2) of them (my Dell
Dimension 2400 and my wife's Compaq Evo D300v), I have MS Windows XP
and CentOS5 running. :-) On my daughters box (Dell Dimension 4300)
I am having problems with the partitioning. Probably this is due to
some mistake I have made, with regard to

Does your rkhunter do an md5 check?
I rebuilt rkhunter-1.2.8-1.noarch.rpm by using the spec and tgz from
the rkhunter site (www.rootkit.nl). (I rebuilt it using his
instructions.) However rkhunter does not do an md5 check. The box
used to have fedora and each time there were updates it would
complain that the some of the md5's don't match. I contacted the
author using his contact feature on Wednesday but he hasn't

Trying to multiboot bartpe & puppy linux on a usb flash with syslinux
Hey list,
I have an older 2005 Uniwill 259ia3 with a Phoenix bios.
Flash booting is limited to keys 512 MB or less!
Here's my setup recipe:
used the HP utility v. 2.0.6 giving me this geometry
---------------- fdisk -l -----------
Disk /dev/sdb: 493 MB, 493879296 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

pxelinux and bar
Has anyone been able to boot a bartpe image successfully using pxelinux or
does anyone know if this is impossible?
For those who don't know, bartpe is a legitimate way to make a trimmed
down installation of Windows XP or Server 2003 using your installation
media.
For more information on bartpe see:

Basically the pebuilder gathers the minimum files needed to

FW: pxelinux and bar
Have a look at the 911cd forums. I wrote the initial thread on RAM
booting WinPE.
To answer to question... memdisk won't work with Windows. Windows uses
32bit access (direct HW access) and memdisk relies on the BIOS. Any
programs that don't use the BIOS disk interfaces will not work. The
other problem is the allocation of memory. Windows doesn't respect the
memdisk allocation.

[off topic] gpxelinux bartpe
I'm trying to boot bartpe from gpxelinux
I'm using gpxelinux and memdisk.
my pxelinux.cfg/default looks as follows
LABEL bartpe
kernel memdisk
initrd http://<path to iso>
append iso raw
Both of these I think I have working correctly. So my question I guess
is for people that may have done this?
Anyways I see the bartpe load screen then the xp load screen and then

SYSLINUX-3.52-pre5: XP BOOTSEC.BIN Bug
I just encountered my only bug w/ the ISOLINUX+VESAMENU combination
from 3.52-pre5. Updated a *working* CD project w/ the new
ISOLINUX+VESAMENU combo just last week. Booting my preferred Linux
distro (Slax-6) from my custom CDs work perfectly, however when I
updated a CD project that includes BartPE/WinPE, BartPE fails to
boot w/ 'CDBoot can not boot CD: error 4" msg. For the

PXE booting BartPE ISO file to Eee Pc
So I've been playing with this for hours and still unable to get everything
working properly. In short I'm trying to boot an ISO image created by BartPE
over pxelinux. When I attempt to do this it goes directly to a blank screen
that just has a blinking cursor. Here's what my setup looks like:

source but with

PXELINUX directory problem
I'm trying to boot multiple ISO files with pxelinux. Booting a single
ISO file works, but if I put them in different sub directories it no
longer works.
I'm using the windows2003 sp1 trick to load my iso's (bartpe, winpe,
erd commander, etc)
pxelinux.0 gives me a menu:
PROMPT 1
DEFAULT hdd
TIMEOUT 100
DISPLAY PXE.MSG
LABEL hdd
LOCALBOOT 0
LABEL bartpe

(hpa-tftpd] remapping with regular expression problem
Hi mailing list,
I'm working on PXE booting a BartPE (=Windows XP) system from a server running
hpa tftpd.
In the initialization phase the files are requested from the boot server by TFTP, later
the transfer is switched to SMB.
Most of the problems during this tftp phase can be solved with the remapping feature
quite nicely like:
*converting filenames into absolute paths
*convert

I may have been rooted - but I may not!?
Morning,
I am going to treat this as a rooted box and reinstall from scratch, but any
thoughts appreciated:
This is a Trixbox Server based on Centos, running kernel 2.6.18-53.1.4.el5
SMP
The phone system stopped working but this was traced to a configuration
error with a replacement switch (it did not get added to the vlan properly),
which meant that Trixbox could not see any DNS servers and

ClamAV thinks Wine contains a rootkit?
Anyone wanna explain why ClamAV thinks Wine has a rootkit in it?
It finds "mountmgr.sys" and "usbd.sys" as "BC.Heuristics.Rootkit.B"
This is not altered Wine.. or even used... but it happens just pure straight up compile from source Wine even if its never been ran.... its finding them in the fakedlls folder.
I have not tried on Linux, only on Mac OS X, using the
