placing x11 libraries in an alternate location
we have close to 50 servers. I would like to have X11 libraries (and devel). Instead of installing them one by one on all servers, I would like to have them in a central NFS location and have my app pick them up like that. Is it possible to do this with yum/rpm ? -- --- Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.--

rpmbuild environment CentOS5 vs CentOS6
On CentOS5 I was used to create a simple spec file where at the end I'll declare files and directories I wan't to package: --< Snip >-- %files %dir /opt/myapp %dir /opt/myapp/bin %dir /opt/myapp/etc /opt/myapp/bin/exec01 /opt/myapp/etc/myapp.conf ---- I'll copy the file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and run "rpmbuild -bb myapp.spec". On CentOS6 rpm-build package no longer

How to handel smtp to public servers
Hi, we do have some subnetworks for private computers, which are allowed to use there public smtp servers like msn, web.de or whatever with the users private accounts. All our own computers have to send mail trough our mailserver with user authentication. From time to time we are faced with the fact, that a virus infected private notebook sends spam and we are told by our ISP to take care :)

Hi, I've just converted my laptop to Centos 6 from Fedora ( gnome 3 made the latest fedora unusable ) and I have one problem. I have several desktops with applications running on them, mainly terminals. At login all the terminals start on desktop 1. How do I get them to start on the desktop they were running on at logoff. That's how it worked on Fedora 13/14 so it must be popssible

Fwd: Bug 800181: NFSv4 on RHEL 6.3 over six times slower than 5.8
Thought I'd post this here, too - I emailed it to the redhat list, and that's pretty moribund, while I've seen redhatters here.... ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: Bug 800181: NFSv4 on RHEL 6.2 over six times slower than 5.7 From: m.roth at 5-cent.us Date: Tue, July 10, 2012 09:54 To: "General Red Hat Linux discussion

stupid bash question
the relevant snippet is... NAME="*.mov" cd $IN if test -n "$(find . -maxdepth 1 -name $NAME -print -quit)" and if there is one file in this directory - ie test.mov, this works fine but if there are two (or more) files in this directory - test.mov, test2.mov then I get an error... find: paths must precede expression So my code is evidently wrong. I just want a test for 1 or

NetworkManager frustration...
I would like to use dnsmasq to cache nameserver query results, and I have set dhcp to prepend the 127.0.0.1 name-server to the list of nameservers. dnsmasq would then automatically exclude the localhost as a name server and use all the others from the list provided by dhcp. But it was too nice to be true, because NetworkManager was there, ready to mess up anything I try to do, including the

off topic - need help registering to the smplayer forum
Hi All, smplayer has no mailing list. I tried to register at http://forum.smplayer.info/ucp.php?mode=register but the capchas are so incredibly impossible to discern that I gave up after 5 tries. I tried the audio option, but the audio option plays so garbled it is impossible to understand. My audio is great. I play youtube vids with great clarity. So I am hoping someone who is on that forum to

Back to eth shuffling ...
Right, I understand that part. However I believe I'm now in the realm of making this specific to this machine as I have no guarantee that another identical machine will pop up with those same bus IDs. Maybe for the internal ports, but I don't know if the same will happen for the PCIe bus. Would that be correct? On Thu, May 14, 2015 at 6:21 PM, Kahlil Hodgson < kahlil.hodgson at

Setting PS1 for ordinary users
CentOS-6 When I login as root I see this prompt: [root at vhost04 ~]# When I login as a non-priviledged user I see this instead: sh-4.1$ .bashrc and .bash_profile have identical contents in /root and /home/user. What causes the difference? Why? How does one change the default so that all normal users get a [userid at hostname pwd]$ prompt? I have loked in/etc/profile.d and /etc/bashrc

How To Record Sound Being Played
Hey all, I've installed MuseScore on my C6.6 machine. MuseScore is able to generate a midi sounding playback through the speakers of the active score. I want to capture that sound directly to a file without using a microphone. I want to send individual sound files to each of the members of my quartet with their part only. Does anyone know how I can capture sound directly to a file? Is

Back to eth shuffling ...
Actually, I know what the MAC is for the builtin Port1 and 2. Those are listed in the BIOS. But ultimately I don't want to rely on them as I want the same kickstart file to work for other machines, so hardcoding those in the kickstart file wouldn't quite work, unless I start writing multiple kickstart files, one per machine. Anyway, lspci reports this: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
Hello, I was not happy with the power consumption of CentOS 6 x86_64 on a new Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet and I worked on reducing it. I just wanted to share with the list one of the changes which gave me the most significant improvement. As per http://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration: pcie_aspm=force

CentOS 7 : keyboard shortcut for mouse gesture?
Hi, I have a CentOS 7 (GNOME) desktop installed as a VirtualBox guest on my Slackware64 14.1 workstation, to fiddle with it. Guest Additions are installed and configured OK, and 3D acceleration is working too. In its default configuration, the GNOME desktop under CentOS shows an "expos?" (I don't know how you call this), a list of all open windows, when you move the mouse cursor to
