Freebsd 7.0-RELEASE-p3 panics
Hello, I've been having spurrious crash troubles with this box a while now and I haven't been able to figure out why. I've ran a couple memtest passes on it and it didn't pick up anything. Here's a backtrace I've been able to obtain. The kernel config is at the end. It's the generic kernel with ULE. I'm following chapter 11 of the developers' handbook, so if

syncer causing latency spikes
Hello, I'm trying to investigate and solve some postgres latency spikes that I'm seeing as a result of some behaviour in the syncer. This is with FreeBSD 8.2 (with some local modifications and backports, r231160 in particular). The system has an LSI 9261-8i RAID controller (backed by mfi(4)) and the database and WALs are on separate volumes, a RAID 6 and a RAID 1 respectively. It has

Linux and Solaris performance
We have an interesting quandry here. When I'm rsync'ing my directory tree (100 directories each containing 1000 files) I see some strange results: All of these machines are on their own network segment (100t) in our QA lab Solaris->Solaris - time taken: 11m32s Solaris->RH Linux 7.2 - time taken: 206s RH Linux->Rn Linux - time taken 1m59s In each instance I have rsync running

PATCH: Forcible delaying of UFS (soft)updates
Here's a patch against 4.8-RELEASE kernel that allows disk writes on softupdates-enabled filesystems to be delayed for (theoretically) arbitrarily long periods of time. The motivation for such updating policy is surprisingly not purely suicidal - it can allow disks on laptops to spin down immediately after I/O operations and stay idle for longer periods of time, thus saving considerable amount

Xapian 1.3.5 snapshot performance and index size
Hi, I ran some tests with Recoll to compare Xapian 1.2.22 and 1.3.5 performance. I mostly used two relatively small document sets (realistic/typical recoll data subsets). The first set is a 2.2 GB mbox folder, with approximately 56K messages in 275 files, producing approximately 64K documents (because of attachments). The second set is a 11 GB folder with 5300 PDF files in it (random PDFS

FreeBSD 7-STABLE, isp(4), QLE2462: panic & deadlocks
Hello everybody, we recently got three Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with Qlogic QLE2462 cards (dual FC 4Gbps ports) and an EMC CLARiiON CX3-40 SAN. The servers with the FC cards were successfully and extensively tested with an older SUN StorEdge T3 SAN. However, when we connect them to the CX3-40, create and mount a new partition and then do something as simple as "tar -C /san -xf
