Subversion 1.8 / FreeBSD 8 x86 STABLE Symlinks
When using svn 1.8 I have come across a situation where when it is used pointing to a symlink that refers to a working directory that a update will either segfault or exit prematurely and leave a lock held on the working directory that the symlink points to.
This leaves you with one choice but to run cleanup on the referenced actual working directory which was AFAIK never the case for any version

Restricting users from certain privileges
Hi:
I could not figure out how to restrict users or other users from certain
privileges to execute certain commands in FreeBSD/NanoBSD?
What I meant is I want to create a NanoBSD image in which there will be an
additional user, say 'admin'. I need to give this new user (admin) some
privileges to run some root-can-only-execute commands, but not all (ACL
similar to the firmwares in adsl

Rooting FreeBSD , Privilege Escalation using Jails (Pétur)
I read this (http://www.petur.eu/blog/?p=459) blog post today. It's
about that a remote user with root privilegs to a FreeBSD jail & user
privileges to the jails host machine can obtain root privileges on the
host machine.
Can someone confirm if this bugg/exploit works?

bad email address
Every time I send a message to this list, I get a bounced email reply
from some Russian exchange server for email address xlino@bvpress.ru.
Is there an admin or a moderator for this list that can remove that
email address from the list?

Problem with MTU > 1500, ifconfig segmentation fault
Hi all,
I am using Xen 2.0.7. I have Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet
(rev 02) cards which support frames greater than 1500.
However when I boot into Xen and try to set the MTU to anything higher
than 1500 (e.g., 4000, 8000 etc) I get a segmentation fault. After this
fault, every command fails with a segmentation fault. I saw a similar
bug report posted here:

Is this a DDoS to reach Asterisk?
Hi Everyone,
I have pfSense running which supplies Asterisk with DHCP. I had some testing
ports opened for a web server which I have totally closed now but when I
chose option 10 (filter log) on pfSense I get all of this type of traffic
(note that it was only 1 single IP and once I blocked that one it was like
opening a can full of bees with all different IPs):
tcpdump: WARNING: pflog0: no

audit events confusion
On a rather full customer web server, I am trying to track down whose
web site script is trying to make outbound network connections when they
should not be. In /etc/security/audit_control, I added to the flags line
dir:/var/audit
flags:lo,aa,-nt
minfree:5
to log failed network connection. When I try an make an outbound
connection to something that is blocked in pf, it seems to sometimes
work.

"server string" ignored by Windows 7?
I'm upgrading the desktops on my LAN from Windows XP to Windows 7 (x64
Ultimate, if that matters). The samba version is 3.5.6 on FreeBSD 8.1
amd64.
I can successfully map the samba shares on both XP and 7, but while XP
shows the expected description which includes the server string (for ex-
ample, "data on 'RAIDzilla II (rz2)' (Y:)", 7 shows only "data (\\rz2)

samba-3.0.24 on openbsd: low throughput
greetings list. am serving SMB using the samba-3.0.24 package on an
openbsd 4.1-release machine and am seeing really low throughput from the
server, even when both the server and client are on gigabit ethernet.
the maximum throughput i've been able to attain is ~6 MBps, which is
pretty slow, both on 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps segments. this top speed is
identical on both 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps.

em2: watchdog timeout -- resetting
Hello, I have a server pfsense in bridge mode to function as transparent
FW, the problem is that once I connect the pfsense between my router core
and my core switch catalyst a few seconds begin to appear several messages
like these:
em2: watchdog timeout - resetting
em2: watchdog timeout - resetting
em2: watchdog timeout - resetting
em2: watchdog timeout - resetting

AMD64 vs i386, ifstat and bsnmp
Couple of little things I noticed with a new RELENG_7 AMD64 box (as
of yesterday)
ifstat from the ports cannot seem to find interfaces for some reason
? It works fine on i386

ifstat: no interfaces to monitor!

Strange IPv6 in FreeBSD 9.1RC1
HI Folks,
I've got two boxes that I recently moved from -stable to 9.1rc1. I did
them one at a time, with about a week between the upgrades. After the
first upgrade, I noticed something strange with networking but didn't
really dig into it much. After the second upgrade immediately experiencing
the same issues, I figured it seemed to be something related to 9.1rc1.
What I am finding

Samba 4.9.3 and the "10 hour problem"
We have a setup with a bunch of Dell servers acting as fileserver for the university here, running FreeBSD with Samba (and NFS & SFTP) to provide service for staff & students.
This works in general really (very) well. We have around 4000-5000 SMB connections spread over 6 servers during “rush hours” (8am-5pm).
However, due to some strange (I bet it’s due to the service ticket timeout)

Dubious ifconfig / tcpdump behaviour
Hi, I have a FreeBSD 4.8 box connected to the net
which until recently hasn't had any problems. Today
DNS lookups mysteriously stopped working (the box has
tinydns & dnscache installed to handle dns requests).
I noticed some strange things while checking the
problem with tcpdump. Tcpdump appears not to show any
traffic whatsoever on either my external interface or
internal lan interface,

OpenVPN ifconfig
I''m new to openvpn and maybe I should be asking on
openvpn''s list...
But I read the tutorial:
http://www.shorewall.net/OPENVPN.html#id2452626
and saw the following:
" On System A:
ifconfig 192.168.99.1 192.168.99.2 "
I don''t understand the reason for using these "virual"
IPs.
For instance, I configured openvpn on my peers so that

ifconfig hw ether and -arp
Hi,
Just thought I'd mention that I spent a while battling with tinc today.
I had quite a weird behaviour - in routing mode, tinc would come up fine
on both hosts, but pinging hosta from hostb wouldn't work until hosta
pinged hostb.
I've used an earlier version of tinc before in a different environment
with no problems, and vaguely remembered a more complicated tinc-up
script, so I
