Missing files from share with cifs
Hi everyone,
since its upgrade yesterday, my laptop and desktop computers only see a small
portion of the files (about 500 of 2000) in one of the samba shares on my
samba server. They both miss the same files. There's no apparent system in
what's missing, not date or alphabetic order or size anyway.
The technical details:
Laptop runs Ubuntu Breezy, smbclient 3.0.14a-ubuntu,

Cannot Ping after successful connection?
I apologize for the TLDR-style email, but I wanted to demonstrate that I have done a lot of work (11 hours and at least 8 tutorials including the tinc docs) before asking for help.
My basic problem is this: tinc appears to properly connect and authenticate the client to the server, but I cannot ping or access resources. (yes. I know there is no 'server' in tinc, but 'server'

Samba 2.2.4 with Win 2k
Hi,
I want to implement a small network using Win 2k and Samba... I only
want to create a Windows 'workgroup' and to use user level security with
plaintext passwords... Just trying to keep things very simple....
I have implemented Samba 2.2.4 on Slackware Linux 7.1 .... Using a
minimal smb.conf:
[global]
workgroup = bentley
netbios name = blackie
server string = This is Linux/Samba

Sorry, should've mentioned this is for home/home office. The ReadyNAS is
a four-bay unit, with 500GB disks. Will want a four-bay, probably with
1- or 2-TB disks.

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
We're using Synology boxes with good results so far.
They're built on Linux with ssh access and good support for
things like rsync.
They have options to backup to remote servers including Amazon too.

iXsystems sells rebadged SuperMicro stuff, nothing special (not made in
Silicon Valley).
We bought an iXsystems TrueNAS (commercial version of FreeNAS +

no, RAID is purely availability when faced with single or double drive
failure, nothing else. classic raid is most certainly NOT about data
integrity, as
