Geom label lost after expanding partition
I have a GPT formatted disk where I recently expanded the size of a
partition. I used "gpart resize -i 6 ada1" first to expand the
partition to use the remaining free space and then growfs to modify
the FFS file system to use the full partition. This was all done in
single-user mode, of course, but when I enter "exit" to bring the
system up, it failed to mount /usr. This was

FreeBSD 9.0 - GPT boot problems?
Hi,
I just installed FreeBSD 9.0-release / amd64 on a new machine (Acer Aspire X1470).
I installed from a usb memory stick (the default amd64 image), which I booted by pressing "F12" and selecting it from the boot menu on the machine.
I installed on a SSD (which replaced the hard drive originally in the machine), using the default scheme for 9.0 (GPT).
The installation was painless (many

Increasing the DMESG buffer....
Hi,
As a next question to my building this server.
I'm nogt able to get a full verbose dmesg.
Probably because the kernelbuffer for it is too small.
I know there used to be a kernel option to increase it.
But I can not find it with the setting in NOTES or any other place I
looked....
Is it still there?
Thanx,

stable/9: Force ada1 to UDMA-33
Hello,
I've got a (P)ATA disk in a special frame. The disk itself
supports UDMA-100 (and has an 80-ribbon cable), but the
frame isn't compatible with that. By default, FreeBSD
negotiates UDMA-100, and the console starts to fill with
ICRC errors.
In the past, I used a patch to ata-all.c that enabled the
following entry in loader.conf to force the disk to UDMA-33,
so it worked fine:

Installing FreeBSD 9.1 amd64 on IBM x3550 M3
Hello,
I'm trying to install FreeBSD 9.1 amd64 on an IBM x3550 M3 server.
Installation went smoothly, RAID controller and network cards were
successfully recognised.
But, after the installation, the server fails to boot from disk.
There were some posts, about two years ago, in this list implying
that the problem lies in UEFI but I couldn't find any clear
solution.
Any suggestions would

Pioneer DVD-120s probe problem
Hello, I'm building a new system for a friend and I bought a
Pioneer DVD-120s drive for him because it was a newer version of the
drive I use (DVD-116) and my friend uses (DVD-106s) with FreeBSD. The
problem is that FreeBSD cannot probe the drive for some reason. I've
tried twiddling the ATAPI_DMA bit, rescanned the drive, and toyed with
the cable, but nothing seems to work.

Regression in stable for ThinkPad T520 with Intel GPU (Sandybridge) between June 22 and July 18
I will shortly spend a bit of time tracking down the breakage more
closely, but my 9-Stable system of June 22 runs fine. After an update
on about July 10, I noted that it would hang after Xorg was started,
but usually worked. After an upgrade to July 18, my system could no
longer start Gnome. It would start Xorg and Gnome would start
normally, getting many apps started, but about 10 seconds after

4.8 installer failure with intel ICH4 ata controller
I'm trying to install 4.8 from cdrom. I get to the kernel config menu,
select the first option, install without configuring a kernel, and the boot
process hangs accessing the cdrom. ad0 (the hard drive) is recognized fine.
The cdrom does:

FBSD 9.2 RC crashes running as virtualbox host
Hi,
after updating my freebsd amd64 box from 9.1 (r250841) to 9.2-RC
(r254276) virtualbox crashes the machine. Seconds after starting VBOX
the screen freezes and then reboots (probably a trap, cannot see it, as
screen is in graphics mode). The kernel modules of vbox have been
recompiled.
Going back to 9.1 kernel and matching vbox modules works.
In both cases VBOX 4.2.16 is used.
cheers, Thomas

6.1 responsiveness under heavy (cpu?) load + thread monitoring
Hello,
I have a RELENG_6/AMD64 with an AMD64X2 cpu, 1GB of memory, 512MB swap.
I remarked that when I run 2 simulation program [1], sometimes, one of them
run one or several of its threads [2] very slowly, but sometimes, it doesn't
occur.
I remarked that is doesn't depend on SMP/UP, ULE/4BSD, i386/AMD64.
It seems to occur also with the kernel stress test under the same conditions

unable to use gmirror on supermicro 5015b-mt
These are new boxes.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015B-MT.cfm
core 2 Q6600 CPU
8Gb 667 RAM
Boxes were memtested from Fri-Mon okay. 6.3-RELEASE (amd64) installs fine.
Build cycle okay. Running (no load) for a week or so.
However, when I try to configure gmirror they hang on boot.
After some fiddling it appears issuing
#kldload geom_mirror
hangs the boxes very hard.

Problem with large numbers of bpf devices
A STABLE (not updated since 12/13/02) system shows very strange behavior
for devices with a minor mode greater than 256. tcpdump does not work
reliably and ls is, uh, "strange", using hex for the minor mode.

bin/121684: : dump(8) frequently hangs
Any progress here? Does anyone know if this will be fixed in 7.1 latest,
or should we start looking for different backup solution (in this case I
would suggest to remove dump from the source tree - having a backup tool
that doesn't work is worse than having none). After upgrading we
basically cannot backup our servers.
Shouldn't this issue be on

ATA driver not as good in 4.8 as 4.5?
I have a Lite-On 24102B burner on an Epox 7KXA (VIA 686A southbridge)
together with a few SCSI disks. I recently upgraded from FreeBSD 4.5
to 4.7 then almost immediately to 4.8. I've had trouble with the burner
since.
With FreeBSD 4.5, I used "sysctl hw.atamodes=---,---,dma,---" to set
the burner to DMA. Everything then worked fine. As far as I know it
was using UDMA33.

unexpected softupdate inconsistency
Hi there,
System is FreeBSD 4.9 Stable
Had a problem during a portupgrade that when portupgrade did some
cleaning a directory could not be deleted because it were not empty.
However, it was empty. rm -rf didn't help either.
Because I didn't know what to do I decided to boot.
At system startup fsck was started which produced the message: unexpected
softupdate inconsistency and also that

Urgent FreeBSD Boot question!
Dear friends:
I decided to go out and buy the latest issue of Linux Format with the
FreeBSD 6 CD. I am very glad I did. FreeBSD is tough to install, but
after spending several hours I finally succeeded in doing a perfect
installation. ONE BIG PROBLEM: When I removed the CD and rebooted, I got
into my Windows XP (I have two separate disks, one for Windows, one of
FreeBSD). There was no way to get
