OT: CreekFM - Fifty Thousand Watts of Pow Wow Power!
You may recall that in the early months of 2009 I was asking some
questions about setting up a streaming audio server for a native-owned
radio station.
It is now up and running, and you're welcome to tune in.

Mysterious versioning reported by file command
I just noticed this, which doesn't actually seem to affect anything but does
create a mystery:
[frankcox at mutt temp]$ cat test.c

int main(void)
{
printf("Hello world\n");
return 0;
}
[frankcox at mutt temp]$ gcc -o test test.c

shared cups printers disappeared
I have two computers, one with a HP printer on it and one with a Samsung
printer on it.
Both systems have their respective pritnters listed under
system-config-printer and have "enabled" "accepting jobs" and "shared" checked.
Up to a few days ago this worked fine. Suddenly I can't see either printer
from the other machine and as far as I know nothing has

Clearlooks & Bluecurve icons missing from Centos 6
The Clearlooks and Bluecurve icon directories that were provided
under Centos 5 that have disappeared on Centos 6. Clearlooks icons were
provided by gnome-themes-2.16.0-1.fc6 and has disappeared with
gnome-themes-2.28.1-6.el6.noarch, and Bluecurve icons were provided by
redhat-artwork-5.1.0-28.el5.centos, which doesn't appear to exist at all with
Centos 6.

Centos 6 - vnc - authentication is required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages
A window keeps popping up on my remote desktop stating "authentication is
required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages. An
application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.
Authentication as the super user is required to perform this action" and asking
for the root password. If I hit cancel it comes back several minutes later.

QT menu decorations missing on Centos 6
See this screenshot for an example of what I get when I run qtconfig-qt4 on
Centos 6 and select a menu:
http://www.melvilletheatre.com/screenshot-qt-example.png
If the list is long, the menu extends from the top to the bottom of my
physical screen, with a little arrow at the top and the bottom which, if I sit
the mouse pointer on the arrow, makes the list scroll up and down.
As you can see, the

Completely automatic yum updating on Centos 6
I am about to set up a computer with Centos 6 that I'll probably never see
again. I don't want to give out the root password, but I would like to have it
automatically and transparently update itself.
What is the best way to do this? I have been looking at webpages about yum-cron
and yum-updatesd but nothing directly addresses Centos 6 and it appears that at
least one of those two

Is gnome-devel-docs supposed to work with devhelp?
I just installed gnome-devel-docs with the objective of having a local copy of
the gnome hig-book and now that I have it installed I don't know how to use it.
I had assumed that it would show up in devhelp but it doesn't. What I have is
a bunch of XML files in /usr/share/gnome/help/hig-book/C, and when I try to
view one with firefox it tells me "This XML file does not appear to have

Local privilege escalation bug in kernel
Do we know if this bug affects Centos?
http://www.techworld.com.au/article/413300/linux_vendors_rush_patch_privilege_escalation_flaw_after_root_exploits_emerge
The article states that it affects kernel 2.6.39 and above, but since RH
backports so much stuff I'm not sure if this would actually include the Centos
kernels.

Gnome System Monitor crashes on Centos 6 x86_64
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried it as a brand new username and it
happens every time.
Add to panel - System Monitor
System Monitor shows up in the panel bar for a split second as a black box, then
crashes with the following message:
Package: gnome-applets-2.28.0-7.el6
Latest Crash: Mon 11 Jul 2011 03:52:52 PM

Gimp PDF plugin - Centos 5
Gimp on Centos 5 has somehow lost its ability to load a pdf file on three (i386)
different computers. I'm pretty sure that this used to work.
When I try to load a PDF file I get the initial box titled "Load Postscript"
with rendering and antialiasing options, but when I hit OK I get an error
message: Opening "filename" failed: Plug-In could not open image."

smartd and palimpsest
I notice that the smartd service is not running by default on a new
installation. But palimpsest seems to get updated statistics every so often as
when I check the statistics on a drive it says "last updated" some number of
minutes ago.
So if smartd isn't running, where does palimpsest get its information from and
what is updating it?
Second question, what would enabling the smartd

Does the new kernel in the Centos 6 cr repository have the joystick enabled

totem-nautilus and totem - mp3 duration
I have both totem-nautilus and the assorted gstreamer-plugins installed for
playing mp3 files through Totem.
I note that Totem doesn't appear to know the duration of an mp3. For example,
if I right-click on a wav or ogg file and click on the audio tab, one of the
fields is Duration and it tells me how long that file will play.
If I do the same with a mp3 file the duration field is always 0

Centos 6 - tigervnc - numbers on keypad
I have a ncurses-based program that runs on a vnc desktop on a remote
computer. On Centos 5 you could enter numbers into the program using the
numeric keypad. I just installed a new machine running Centos 6 to do this
same job and now numbers can only be entered using the numbers across the top
of the keyboard. The program still recognizes the keys on the keypad when
numlock is not set (so you

print job gui for remote access
Users on Machine A with rights to log into and run jobs on Machine B using ssh
want to be able to view and cancel print jobs on Machine B.
This is easily accomplished via the commandline with lpq and lprm, but is there
a GUI that I can give them? I have them running things like scribus using
launchers like "ssh -X machineb scribus" and would like to provide similar
functionality for

Data consumption (external connections only)
There's a whole herd of ways to count and track the amount of data that goes
through a given network port. However, I'm looking for a user-friendly (and
pretty, if possible) monitor or counter program with the following features:
1. Grand total amount of data in and out since last counter reset.
2. Resettable counters both manual (reset it when you want to) or timed (reset

SOLUTION: Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics Controller - GDM login doesn't show up
This problem is so damn weird and frustrating that I thought it would be
worthwhile to post this solution for anyone who may run into this situation in
the future, since I was unable to find any mention of this after much
searching, and no error messages appear in any logfiles that I could find
either.
This applies to a machine with a Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated

blue screen instead of login screen
I installed Centos 6.2/i386 on a machine last night with a 1920x1080 monitor.
The installer ran in graphical mode and looked fine. After the install was
finished I rebooted and ran through the "firstboot" stuff (set up user, etc)
with no problem and, again, it looked good.
After that, when I should have seen the gdm login screen, all I got was the
blue background but not the box with
