/minus or /hyphen in PS output
Dear R devolepers! Wouldn't you change src/main/devPS.c file (patch will follow). Problem is with minus sign in ps output. The original code forces the name /minus to the character number 45 (-). But /minus symbol is not defined in standard Adobe encoding and (even worse) is not defined in most type1 fonts (where the name /hyphen is used instead), in this case you will have an empty

Quote the path of graphics output in Sweave when it contains spaces
Hi, I'm aware of the definition of a "valid filename" in .SweaveValidFilenameRegexp, but I think it might be better to quote the filename when it contains spaces instead of just giving a warning. This should bring us safer LaTeX code (although I never use spaces in paths). Here is the simple patch: Index: src/library/utils/R/SweaveDrivers.R

ASCII character set and hyphen
Hi all! To add to my previous posting I want to give some more deatils give a more precise I want to print a hyphen to a pdf() or postscript() device. As the documentaion of postscript says ASCII Character 45("-") is mapped to a minus sign (ASCII Character 95) by default. The advice given is to use "\173" for a hyphen. But, the following code produces a curly brace instead

how to make a sub list from a long list using the component name?
Hello, R users, I have a long list with over 20,000 elements (say foo), now I want to make a sub list of 30 elements from this list using the component names such as subname<-c( "a", "b", "d", "f", "g", "h", "o", "q",...). One way to do it is to make rest of elements in the list NULL, that is too silly. Is there

diverting output from nested loops
Dear List, I have a series of nested loops with the structure shown below, and I am struggling to figure out how to divert output to folders created with dir.create() within the loops. What I need is for the output to end up as topNameK/subNameL/objNameM.pdf; what I get instead is a series of directories topNameK/, directories subNameL/, and files objNameM.pdf, all in the working directory. Any

Sweave, cacheSweave, and data frame
Dear All, I have been using Sweave (mainly via the Sweave.sh script) and really like it. I am working a paper (using Sweave, of course) which includes several time-consuming computations, and it gets tedious to re-compile the whoel thing every time I made changes. Then I discover the "cacheSweave" package, which seems the right solution to my problem. I only have on problem. Here is

srt --- slope text with function?
[resent, plus small addition; I do not understand why gmail sent a weird charset.] Dear R wizards: I would love to write a general function that matches the slope of a plotted line in an xy-plot at a particular x,y location. something like x<- (1:10)^2; y<- 40:50; plot( x,y, type="l", xlim=c(0,90) ) srt.at5 = text.at.current.plot.with.slope( x, y, 5); text(

RPM Spec and subpackage architecture
Are there any RPM wizards out there that know how to specify a different architecture for a subpackage in a spec file? I have a package that has a binary component and a non-binary component that I would like split into 2 packages one, the binary which is architecture dependant and the other 'noarch'. I haven't found a spec file that does this yet :-( Ross S. W. Walker

hyphen replaced by period in header when using read.table
To Whom It May Concern: I have noticed that all of the hyphens ("-") are changed to periods (".") when I try to read.table() and the headers contain "-" I am using R 2.13 on a RedHat system. Here is the situation: I have the following a tab-delimited text file saved as test.txt File1-a.txt File1-b.txt File2-a.txt File2-b.txt 1 1 2 1 1 2 3 2 1 1 2 3

XML "Un-Builder?"
I''ve been unserializing XML in PHP with the XML_Serializer class, and I''m wondering if anyone knows of such a class for Ruby. Nothing fancy, just perhaps a simple way of converting arbitrary XML to a Ruby object. Maybe this has been implemented somewhere already? Thanks, Raymond

rpm building and hyphens in Version tags
According to http://www.rpm.org/api/4.4.2.2/specfile.html a Version: tag can contain a hyphen, as the tarball for the source I am compiling is named 2.3-pre4 etc. When I try to build it I get an error about the illegal char? Anyone know about the discrepancy between the docs and RHEL's rpmbuild? Without recreating a new tarball and bungling the name how does one gracefully handle this?

'phrase' default-op mixed with hyphenated words
Hi all, I've come across an issue caused when I try to set the query parser's default op to OP_PHRASE: Xapian raises an Unimplemented Error if the query contains hyphenated words or other terms that implicitly generate a phrase. This can be shown with the following Python extract: >>> from xapian import * >>> qp = QueryParser() >>>

trouble with \SweaveOpts{grdevice=...}
Dear all I've just tried the brand new 'grdevice' option in Sweave but couldn't make it work. When I declare \SweaveOpts{grdevice=pdf} or \SweaveOpts{grdevice=cairo_pdf} trying to plot something simple <<fig=T, echo=T>>= plot(1:10,1:10,main='Some title') @ would result in an Sweave error: 18:16:47.299: 1 : term verbatim 18:16:47.308: 2 : echo term verbatim

pdf default version
R has had the ability to generate pdfs with transparent colors for a couple of years now using pdf(..., version="1.4"). By default, Sweave uses just 'pdf' (without version 1.4), so a hack is needed when using Sweave to create pdfs with transparent colors. See http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/04/11/6655.html I would find my work process simpler if R defaulted to
