Assistance Requested
Hello, I am currently experiencing a bit of a quandry with how to specify default configuration applications to generic nodes. Here is an example setup: Classes: Class A Class B inherits Class A Class C inherits Class B Problem: I have unique hosts (nodes) X and Y and a bunch of other standard hosts. I would like X and Y to be able to override attributes in Class C (thus inherit class C) but

Problem enforcing permissions on remote file copy
Hello, I have been attempting to do the following: file { "/home/test/test.txt": owner => test, group => test, checksum => md5, source => "puppet://puppet/files/test.txt" } At first, this appeared to work, but now I realize that when the file is copied from the server, the permissions are not applied until the next puppet run. Does puppet not apply the

sslcertificates module for debian and darwin
Hey all, i have attached a module which installs SSL-Root-certificates in Debian and Darwin. One thing is left to do for darwin: check whether the certificate is installed already. Until I have figured out how to do this, The test is rather simple. There is a class called dfncertificates defined in this module which gives you a hint how the module is used. Have fun, comments are welcome. udo.

Is there a limit on the size of a template?
Hello, I have recently run across the following error: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/yaml/rubytypes.rb:315: [BUG] Segmentation fault This has happened after adding a particularly large template file with ruby 1.8.1. Re: Subscribe to multiple files - Modification
Hello, I apologize for the duplicate post, but I made a typo last time. I am trying to notify the service, not subscribe to it. Also, I found that notifying a service, in this case nfs, appears to cause the service to load even if the service is configured to be disabled. Is this supposed to happen, or should the ensure => stopped state be enforced even during a notify? Thank you, -- Rob

Unless in exec doesn''t seem to be honored on notify.
This was a fun one to track down... I was trying to use the append_if_no_such_line script from the wiki and it was working fine EXCEPT when I threw a notify at it. The notify appears to completely ignore both unless and onlyif within the exec for some reason. If I put the same test in the actual command line, it works fine. Example: unless => "/bin/grep -Fqe ''$line''

IO lockups and ext3 readonly filecorruption on RHEL4 (pre and post U4)
Has anyone been seeing IO lockup problems on EL4? I've tried multiple IO scheduler options (elevator=) in the boot... I'm seeing the same behavior regardless. Independent of hardware. Whitebox ATA, HA enclosure with dedicated SCSI, megaraid RAID hardware, Dell 2850s... same behavior: A semi-busy system will suddenly go into some kind of IO la-la land where nothing can be written

Some trouble with file and source
Is it possible to have two files that source the same puppet-hosted file in the same File description? Example: [ "/etc/issue", "/etc/issue.net" ]: owner => root, group => root, mode => 644, source => "puppet://puppet/files/issue" Should this work, or am I doing something wrong? Thank you, -- Rob --

Smashing EXT3 for fun and profit (or: how to loose all your data)
Hello everyone, I've just lost my whole EXT3 linux partition by what was probably a bug. For your reading pleasure, and in the hope there is enough information to fix this problem in the future, here the story of a violent ending: This tragic history starts actually on windows: MS Word had wiped out an important file on a floppy, and I got the task of retrieving what was possible. SSL Questions
Hi, I''ve just started using puppet and I have a couple of questions about the SSL capabilities. 1) Can I use my own certs or do I have to use the ones provided by puppetmaster? 2) How can I set the "Not Before" time to be now instead of a few hours from now? Thanks! ____________________________________________________________________________________ It''s here!

Default variable reference
Hello, I have been perusing the documentation looking for the default list of variables that puppet defines such as $operatingsystem. For instance, how is $host translated; <host>.<domain>, or just <host> and where can I find this information. Subscribe to multiple files
Hello, I am attempting to reload both nfs and nfslock when changing my exports configuration file. Unfortunately, I am unable to discern the correct syntax for making a single object subscribe to multiple objects. I have tried: => [nfs nfslock] => [nfs, nfslock] => [[nfs],[nfslock]] => [[nfs] [nfslock]] and none of them seem to work. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank

Remounting after changing mount options.
Unfortunately, this is another "I don''t yet know ruby" question, but I''m hoping that someone can help me out. I''ve just tried to write some mount options via puppet and I noticed that, while fstab is written, the managed mounts are not remounted to effect the stated changes. For instance: Original - /home, options: rw Puppet - /home, options: rw,acl

How to compile OpenSSH on HP-UX10
I did this as a project back in the early 2002, and I had a nice little how-to to walk me through it. Many work places and moves, and I've lost it. I have a friend who asked me about this recently, and I can't seem to find anything on the web, or the how-to I used (not surprised). If I remember correctly, you needed an up-to-date zlib, egd (or prng), OpenSSL, tcpwrappers, and OpenSSH.

Cron jobs not removed when deleted from Manifest
I''m not sure if this has been posted previously, but I couldn''t find any information on it. I added a cron job via the cron type and it installed properly. Next, I removed the cron type from the manifest. The result was that, while the entry was no longer in the yaml file, the cron entry was not removed! Is this a bug, or the way that it is supposed to function? Thank you,

Multiple mounts instead of remounting?
I'm having issues trying to remount any shares using samba. Super Short version mount -o remount /some_windows_share creates a duplicate mount instead of properly remounting. Full details... I have many shares served off of NT4 boxes, mounted via samba on a linux box (RHEL 4). Since long dormant (>12 hour) shares from one server in particular always have problems for a few seconds when
