Unless in exec doesn''t seem to be honored on notify.
This was a fun one to track down...
I was trying to use the append_if_no_such_line script from the wiki and it
was working fine EXCEPT when I threw a notify at it.
The notify appears to completely ignore both unless and onlyif within the
exec for some reason.
If I put the same test in the actual command line, it works fine.
Example:
unless => "/bin/grep -Fqe ''$line''

Type development for the rest of us
Since I had my type development epiphany a couple of days ago, I''ve decided
to write down my understanding of developing simple types, at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PracticalTypes.
I''d appreciate comments from people who already know how to develop types as
to correctness, and also comments from people who are new to type
development about whether it''s a

Is there a limit on the size of a template?
Hello,
I have recently run across the following error:
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/yaml/rubytypes.rb:315: [BUG] Segmentation fault
This has happened after adding a particularly large template file with ruby 1.8.1.
Thank you,

learning the cron module
OK. I thought I would start by looking at how cron.rb in the puppet
lib/type works because what I''m trying to accomplish is similar.
However, when looking through that, it wasn''t immediately obvious to me
how or when the resulting cron file was getting written out.
Is this getting stored up in some instance var or something? Maybe
getting sent to standard out and some

Weird custom type behaviour
Hey,
I have a very trivial parsedfile based type - http://pastie.org/311146

when being run by the daemonized puppet, it results in this error:

Problem enforcing permissions on remote file copy
Hello,
I have been attempting to do the following:
file { "/home/test/test.txt": owner => test, group => test, checksum => md5, source => "puppet://puppet/files/test.txt" }
At first, this appeared to work, but now I realize that when the file is copied from the server, the permissions are not applied until the next puppet run.
Does puppet not apply the

Negating or removing classes
I have a situation where I''d like to perform some actions when a node is
removed from a class. I have a few (homegrown) services that install ssh
keys in authorized_keys and it''s possible that a node may have the
service enabled and disabled during it''s lifetime. When disabled I''d
like to clean up the ssh keys for security reasons.
This brings up the broader

Default variable reference
Hello,
I have been perusing the documentation looking for the default list of variables that puppet defines such as $operatingsystem.
For instance, how is $host translated; <host>.<domain>, or just <host> and where can I find this information.
Thank you,

overriding included classes
I believe this has already been discussed[1], but I''d like to add a bit
more to that original discussion and see if anyone has any suggestions.
Here''s what I''m trying to do: we have a set of very thorough "wipe"
scripts that run every night on our workstations. I''d like to stash
these into a class so that I can include them as a group:

"Found a bug" message when purging services
I attempted the following:
resources { service: purge => true, noop => true }
service {
sshd: ensure => running;
iptables ensure => running;
}
And got the following message:
notice: Starting configuration run
err: Found a bug: uninitialized constant Parse
notice: Finished configuration run in 0.47 seconds
When I remove the ''resources'' line, everything works

manage cron jobs
Hi All,
is it possible to delete cronjobs by patterns using ''cron'' resource?
I.e. I want to make sure that there is no any cronjob that contains "/
path/to/some/unneeded_file" command in root crontab without knowing
the command possible parameters and schedule.
If no, any suggestions about how it can be performed are welcome.
Thanks in advance

Brainstorming - how to manage Shorewall rules
Shorewall (IP Tables frontend - www.shorewall.net) has been kind of a
headache in trying to move forward with puppet - we just haven''t found
a clean way to manage the "rules" file. With that in mind - would it
be possible to create a "shorewall_rule" type?
The rules file is a simple file with space/tab delimited fields:

Useradd & NIS issue if the user exist
Hi,
I have a class to add users to all the host servers. We are in
the process to have a coexisting user which belongs in NIS & as well as
/etc/passwd.
We have NIS clients (yp running) on all host servers.
So when running puppet is fails to add or modify user, bcos the user
already exists in NIS.
Eg: A user pcruise is an existing NIS user.

Using resource names in templates...
Hi all,
I''ve been turning my head upside down to find a solution on the
following problem:
I have a samba fileserver and need to make puppet do:
1. Create groups
2. Create directories with group rights
3. Create an smb-shares.conf from a template that can be included in
the main smb.conf.
To do this I need to have a combination of sharename and group _and_
create the
