Group changes made over and over?
Hi, I have several Debian servers with puppet 0.23.2. Part of my manifest looks like this: class virt_all_users { @group { "andy": ensure => "present", gid => "1000" } @user { "andy": ensure => "present", uid => "1000",

Help me understand class namespacing
I asked on IRC but no one responded. Suppose the following: class basenode { include users include security class webserver { include apache, php } } node web1a { include basenode::webserver } Does node web1a imply including users and security specified under class basenode as well? Similarly, does this mean the same thing? class basenode { include users include security }

puppetd and self management
OS: FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE Puppet: 0.22.4 OS: CentOS 5.0 Puppet: 0.23.2 Is it currently not possible for puppetd to upgrade itself (0.22.4 -> 0.23.2)? I tried it, and when puppetd attempted to restart itself (using the init provider), it failed to start back up. Perhaps the init provider needs to close all file handles before executing the rc.d scripts? Additionally, I had puppetd update its

defining client/server configs
Still very new to puppet, so go easy :-) Bit of a braindump I''m afraid, but I''d really appreciate any "Yep", "interesting", "No!!!" comments. I''ll start with an example - adding NTP support. This primarily consists of two configs: a) NTP clients - this is quite easy, it''s a templated file requiring the names of the NTP

ensure => latest forcing recompile?
I''m running puppet from svn - build 2537. I''ve got a functional configuration and am testing it on a couple of development machines prior to moving it into production. I noticed today that the machines are taking ~300 seconds to process their configurations, so i watched a run and saw that it''s recompiling all of the Packages every single time. The only thing

Puppet ldapnodes issue
I am attempting to move our test puppet installation from looking for node information in a manifest to LDAP. I followed the instructions at: https://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/LdapNodes and was able to get the puppet schema loaded into our LDAP. I can now query LDAP and modify/load data without any issues using the OpenLDAP tools. e.g. ldapsearch -h ldapdev1.domain.com -x

Virtual resource not found
Hi All, I asked on IRC but didn''t have everything organized and most people seemed busy. Hoping someone can see what I''m missing here. I''m trying to create a network module, used similar to the ''users'' configuration described in the Best Practices document. I have a users module which has that and it works with similar syntax to below. If I

FQDN nodes in LDAP
Hi, I''ve set up puppet to get node definitions from LDAP as per the docs. It''s been working well, but I now want to use fully qualified domain names instead of simple domain-less hostnames for the node name. I replaced the ou=Hosts entries with equivalent ones using FQDNs, restarted the puppetmasterd, and tried a "puppetd --test" from one of the nodes. However, I

Is this a bug with namespacing?
Yesterday, I switched our node structure from using node basenode, node nodetype inherits basenode, to using node classes per the changes discussed recently on this list and as defined in the wiki:GlossaryOfTerms. In the manifest, we have a syslog module which sets up all the components of syslog-ng we''re using. The ''syslog'' class is used by default on clients and then

looking for a way to remove module interdependencies
Hello List, i''m running into an issue with puppet where I don''t know how to solve correctly. We''re managing applications and our monitoring (nagios) using puppet using the following schema: class nagios { // ensure nrpe ist installed // export a host definition nagios::check { ''ping'': } nagios::check { ''load'': } ...

new puppet config - fileserver issue
Hi I am a newbie to puppet. I have tried an initial config serving a simple file & dir from the puppetmaster, but the client will not mount. What obvious mistake am I making, I wonder? puppetmaster is a DNS alias for osiris3. Config files: [root@osiris3 puppet]# cat fileserver.conf [config] path /data/puppet/manifests/files allow *.pinnacle.co.uk [root@osiris3 puppet]# cat puppet.conf

Some ''in service'' questions
Hi, Just a quick query about some things that crop up when I run ''puppetd --test''. Every time I run this command I always see the following output, which I think is strange as the ''man'' package has been installed previously and the firewall service is definitely running. Has anybody got any suggestions as to why puppet thinks it needs to install the man

Node behavior
Hello, I am rather new to Puppet and am starting to test it out for use on a client''s servers. I am running into difficulty with node behavior. I want to specify a different firewall for every server. The default "basenode" works (applies the various files/functions/etc to all the servers just fine). However, when I specify the following (see nodes.pp, specifically),

Template errors
Hi, I''m having a problem with templates and a remote node. I have a working puppetserver and and puppet client (on the same server) which successfully runs my manifest(s) and now I''m trying to add a new client on a separate server. It all seems to work except for when I try to use templates. For example : file { "/etc/apt/sources.list":

Puppet newbie: using defines
Hi folks, I''m trying to get my feet wet in puppet-land. I''ve successfully installed a puppetmaster and client and managed to get them to do something (the sudo file-permission example as explained in the tutorials). Now I''m trying to do something a bit more complex using defines but nothing seems to happen anymore. Config files involved: ###### site.pp filebucket {

Starting out with lots of problems.
So I am beginning the long process of learning puppet... and it seems that I am missing some vital things. My systems are RHEL-4, and i have installed the puppet/facter/puppetmasterd from dlutter@redhat.com''s archive. [root@canopus puppet]# rpm -qa | egrep ''puppet|facter'' | sort facter-1.3.6-1.el4 puppet-0.22.2-1.el4 puppet-server-0.22.2-1.el4 on the client I

Global Variables?
What is the view of having / not having global variables in Puppet? Facter variables are global in the sense they are defined in every scope (whereas ''normal'' variables are only available within the scope they are defined in). I could simply add a custom fact for my DoesTheServerNeedASerialConsole flag to Facter, but I''m not 100% sure I should be having the client

Not so complex CompleteConfiguration example of a Complete Configuration?
I am new to Puppet and very eager to apply it to a project. But I am somewhat stymied by the learning curve. So far I''ve found many very simple examples of how to modify a file or add a user and a very complex example http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/CompleteConfiguration . I have not been able to find any other examples of a total configuration tree (ie /etc/puppet/*)

cert problem with client
I recently had a working puppet server serving around 4-5 clients. One of the clients needed to be re-built and now only that client cannot connect. puppetca --clean hostname did not work So here is what I did on both the server/client I removed /var/lib/puppet/* Then I restarted the server via puppetmasterd --mkusers --verbose I then connect in via the client with /usr/bin/ruby
