Backward compatibility issues in 0.24.0
Hi all, Hobbeswalsh on IRC has discovered a backward compatibility issue in 0.24.0, preventing 0.23.x clients working well with 0.24.0 servers. Specifically, you can''t specify relationships to builtin resources when the client is 0.23.x, although specifying relationships to defined resources still works. The problem is that prior to 0.24.0 there was no central class

learning the cron module
OK. I thought I would start by looking at how cron.rb in the puppet lib/type works because what I''m trying to accomplish is similar. However, when looking through that, it wasn''t immediately obvious to me how or when the resulting cron file was getting written out. Is this getting stored up in some instance var or something? Maybe getting sent to standard out and some

new puppet providers
I might have the terminology wrong, but how to a give new puppet providers to the puppet clients? I''m thinking a provider is the thing the puppet client uses to implement a task that the master has given it. Am I way off here? Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running?
Just curious as to the functionality of puppet. Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running as long as puppet is running? Ie, I want to make sure ssh is always running, if for some reason ssh get''s shut down, does puppet start it back up when it does it''s config sync run? Thanks! --------------------------------- Pinpoint customers who are looking for

Ideas about learning
I''m looking for some ideas about how to learn how to use puppet. One of my main concerns is dorking up the machine I''m testing it on. For this I''m using a VM. So that concern is mainly taken care of. If some of you experienced puppet users where going to do it all over, what parts would you try to learn first? I have successfully been able to get a cronjob added

The puppet model
It seems to me that when you have a master server and a client computer, the master doesn''t really need to know the implementation details of the client computer. It''s kinda like a browser from my perspective...the server is just telling the browser what needs to be drawn on the local side. Does the puppet model work like this? If not, I guess what I read didn''t

Switching to mongrel
I made an attempt to switch to mongrel today and I''m running into a strange error message I can''t seem to track down: debug: puppetmaster: Setting servertype to ''mongrel'' Server is not a class Tracing through with the debugger shows: [snip] /foo/lib/gems/puppet-0.22.4/bin/puppetmasterd:248: case Puppet[:servertype] (rdb:1) n

Puppet as a push model
I just started digging into puppet and it looks like puppet is using a pull model. You have a master server and clients talk to it to get config info. Is anyone out there using a push model? If not, why not? Are there security reasons you would use one over the other? It seems that cfengine also uses a push model, so I wondered if this is a "standard" or if there are specific

Questions about modules and namespaces
Hello >From my understanding, modules are not autosearched. So, if I have: include ssh ... then puppet will look for a module names ssh and class named ssh defined in /modules/ssh/init.pp Moreover, if I have: include ssh::global ... then Puppet will for class global defined in /modules/ssh/init.pp or /modules/ssh/global.ss. Is that correct? Or am I leaving out some imports

perl updates always break perl programs, how to fix?
I realize this is my fault because once upon a time I installed a package using CPAN and probably other admins on the system have as well but now whenever I update perl I have to jump through hoops to get perl applications to work again (usually updating Scalar::Util and another package with CPAN). I would love to figure out how to fix this so it's not such a headache to keep up to date with

Puppet tgz installs...
Hi I''m anxious to get puppet into production, and although I''d prefer installing puppet as a .deb package (as most of the servers in our shop runs Debian), I think I''ll try to get some of my not-so- important servers into my test setup by installing puppet with the .tgz files. Upon the first installation I realize that puppetd and puppetmasterd is copied to

Puppet is reporting missing libraries
Ok, I installed Ruby/LDAP to try and get Puppet''s ldapnodes support working and despite doing this I am still getting errors from puppetmasterd "notice: Could not set up LDAP Connection: Missing ruby/ldap libraries" followed by "info: Skipping ldap source; no ldap connection". I traced down this particular message to: lib/puppet/parser/interpreter.rb and it appears

Puppet Documentation
I''ve been watching the thread where Luke is having to spend time defending his position about documentation. Can we get off that? From my perspective, Luke, I''m glad you have documented as much as you have. I''m one of the few who have been a little stymied by what documentation is available, but in no way do I believe berating you for your lack of documentation is a

cron and name with ''.''
I dont know if i am missleaded but it seems to me that the cron type does not accept names with a ''.'' in it ? I tried to add a cron with a name cron1-$domainename and it does not accept it. If i remove the ''.'' in the domain it work. I am using .22.3 anyone seeing the same behavior ? If yes i will fill it as a bug. -- Cordialement, Ghislain ADNET. AQUEOS.

latest gem
How often does the gem get generated for "latest?" Is it current with trunk? I don''t have access to svn client at the moment, but am working on that. So my only options seem to be to hand edit or use a gem. It should be obvious which one I would prefer. :) Right now I''m bumping up against the cron errors that were fixed in 2697. Mike B.

Modifying a firewall
I''m trying to be able to use puppet to modify an existing firewall on a web server. The idea is that if I use puppet to do this, then if the machine ever has to be rebuilt, aside from backups, I have a documented configuration. I looked at the module that was on the wiki that had a perl program and what not, but I don''t think I''m clear on what my thinking should be

Best practise guide
Hi, I''m a new puppet user (thanks !) and I''m just looking at moving my homegrown manifest structure into something resembling the best practise guide at : http://www.reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PuppetBestPractice. It seems as if the structure here doesn''t map to the default puppet layout (and thus doesn''t work with the standard puppet config

Problem Managing Ruby Gems
I''m trying to have puppet install a bunch of ruby gems for me, but I''m running into problems with a few of them. This is on CentOS 4.4, ruby 1.8.5 (2006-08-25) [x86_64-linux] and the latest puppet from svn as of yesterday afternoon. I have: package { fastthread: ensure => "0.6.4.1", provider => gem, require =>
