Best practice for users/groups on solaris
Hi all, I''m a new puppet user and I''m running into some weirdness
around creating users on solaris. (puppet version 0.23.2)
The virt_all_users way of managing users seems pretty reasonable, but
I don''t see how to deal with user specific groups with that.
I have:
class virt_all_users {
@user { "seph":
ensure => "present",

size of template file
Hi,
How big a template file can be?
When I tested with a kind of large file (about 23KB, 570 lines),
puppetmasterd ended up with a segmentation fault.
Then I made the file shorter than original (about 6KB, 145 lines),
the file was created but it is shorter than it should be.
What I have is just 3994 bytes and 80 lines.
Replacing the string is done correctly.
I would like to know the limit of

Newbie questions...
I''ve spent the last week or two poring over the documentation and
setting up my first puppet environment, and while I''ve figured out
how to do most of what I want to do with it, I have some questions
that I haven''t been able to find answers for...
* Can I match parts of a facter fact? In particular I have hostnames
that include the environment as part of the

escape regex code
hello,
i wondered if it would not be interesting to have some filters
function in puppet like
filter_integer(), filter_prelregex, filter_text, filter_email or such
so we can validate and make our defines a little more foolproof :)
i particulary see filter_regex as usefull in quite a lot of exec that
manipulates text files. What do you think about this ?

Handling unmanaged resources and their files/configs
We have resources that, from time to time, are selected to be removed
(unmanaged). When it comes to ssh keys, fstab... this leaves a lot
of stuff behind that we don''t want. Is there a simple way to remove
the unmanaged data so we can keep the systems clean.
Thanks.

Testing modules
There''s definitely enough complexity in some of the modules out there to
warrant solid test coverage, especially if people start extending a module
to support more distributions and OSes, while trying to keep the existing
support working. That''s even before you start thinking about functions,
facts, and native types. They''re *really* in need of solid testing, being

Group changes made over and over?
Hi,
I have several Debian servers with puppet 0.23.2. Part of my
manifest looks like this:
class virt_all_users {
@group { "andy":
ensure => "present",
gid => "1000"
}
@user { "andy":
ensure => "present",
uid => "1000",

Pupppet Ruby DSL
I constantly get told I should just create a DSL in Ruby, instead of
having a separate, custom language. This has, unsurprisingly, come
up multiple times here at OSCON.
So, I decided I''d see if I could hack something up and see how it
looked. This is the first thing I could come up with in terms of the
basic functionality:
#!/usr/bin/ruby
class Base
file "/etc/passwd",

vardir as a symlink
hi,
i''m playing with puppet on a few machines, and i''d like to have my
puppet vardir on a volume other than the one on which my /var resides. i
tried creating a symlink, but puppet seems to blow that away and
recreate /var/puppet (!!). i''ve looked around in the source but don''t
see anything obvious.
am i doing something wrong?
thanks,

Scaling Puppet 0.22.1 to hunderdes of nodes.
Hi,
My environment is composed of ~250 workstations hitting a single
puppetmaster server, which has been working fairly well up until now.
The most recent change has been a migration of a lot of remote file copy
objects which were previously handled with cfengine.
client side puppetd calls to the puppetmaster.getconfig method are
taking unreasonably long, on the order of 2-3 minutes. It

puppetd.pid and SMF woes
So when puppetd crashes/whatever, and a pid file is left behind, SMF
in Solaris will try restarting puppet, but fail. And then it sits
there restarting it forever.
I''m not sure if I can adjust the flap detection in SMF.. it isn''t
disabling the service for "restarting too quickly" because it takes so
long to start. Probably because I''m NFS-mounting ruby. The

41 server under puppet today
Hello there.
Just to let you know i have just put in production mode puppet on 41
freeBSD 4.7 virtual servers (yes not real servers but "jailed ones"). I
had some little problems with facter at first but i have manualy
upgraded the servers that where affected by the little "facter does not
read his facts" problem i had. I should have missed something in my
deploiement.

Cron jobs not removed when deleted from Manifest
I''m not sure if this has been posted previously, but I couldn''t find any information on it.
I added a cron job via the cron type and it installed properly. Next, I removed the cron type from the manifest.
The result was that, while the entry was no longer in the yaml file, the cron entry was not removed!
Is this a bug, or the way that it is supposed to function?
Thank you,

How to handle config files used by a combination of classes?
Hi,
How should I handle the combinatorics when one config file must be
built for a combination of possible classes?
Take for example the amd automounter''s configuration file, which on
Debian is found at /etc/am-utils/amd.conf. This is an INI style file
which looks like:
[fsname1]
param1=foo
param2=bar
[fsname2]
param1=baz
param2=quag
In my case I have one class of machines

Node behavior
Hello,
I am rather new to Puppet and am starting to test it out for use on a
client''s servers. I am running into difficulty with node behavior. I
want to specify a different firewall for every server. The default
"basenode" works (applies the various files/functions/etc to all the
servers just fine). However, when I specify the following (see
nodes.pp, specifically),

Type development for the rest of us
Since I had my type development epiphany a couple of days ago, I''ve decided
to write down my understanding of developing simple types, at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PracticalTypes.
I''d appreciate comments from people who already know how to develop types as
to correctness, and also comments from people who are new to type
development about whether it''s a
