How to handle INT8 data
Well I definitely cannot use them as numeric because join is the main
reason of those identifiers.
About int64 and bit64 packages, it's not a solution, because I am
releasing a dataset for external users. I cannot ask them to install a
package in order to exploit them.
I have to be very carefull when releasing the data. If a user just use
read.csv functions, they by default cast the

FreeBSD 4.9 RC1 (more bad news)
A few hours ago I downloaded .../i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.9-RC1-i386-disc1.iso
and made kern/mfsroot floppies from it. If I enable my ICH5R SATA
controller in "native" mode, the 4.9-RC1 GENERIC kernel hangs solidly
(only the system reset button can unwedge it) during device configuration.
The last line of bootstrap monologue written by the kernel is:

How to handle INT8 data
Hello r users,
I have to deal with int8 data with R. AFAIK R does only handle int4
with `as.integer` function [1]. I wonder:
1. what is the better approach to handle int8 ? `as.character` ?
`as.numeric` ?
2. is there any plan to handle int8 in the future ? As you might know,
int4 is to small to deal with earth population right now.
Thanks for you ideas,

Signal handling / alarm timeouts
What are the ramifications of setting up user signal handling to allow
the use of e.g. alarm(2) to send a SIGALRM to the R process at some
number of seconds in the future to e.g. interrupt a routine that is
taking too long to complete.
I can't find any R language support for this (e.g. a timeout argument
to tryCatch() would be ideal), so am wondering what kinds of problems
are to be expected

How to handle INT8 data
Hi,
I do have < INT_MAX.
This looks attractive but since they are unique identifiers, storing
them as factor will be likely to be counter-productive. (a string
version + an int32 for each)
I was looking to https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/csvread/index.html
This looks like a good feet for my needs.
Any chances such an external package for int64 would be integrated in core ?

4-STABLE b0rked in share/locale/zh_CN.GBK
Murray,
Your commits earlier this evening to zh_CN.GB18030 fixed that -STABLE
breakage, but zh_CN.GBK appears still to be missing, which causes
'make installworld' to fail. Can you please fix this as well?

Dell Perc 6 disk geometry problem with RAID5 (both 6.3 final and 7.0 RC1)
Hi,
We bought a new Dell PowerEdge 2950III with Perc 6/i and have the disk
geometry problem using 6.3 final or 7.0 RC1. Seems that we are not alone at
least one guy has similar problem reported earlier:
http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/questions/2008-01/msg00506.html
I was reading the mailing list and found that some of the people are happily

[PATCH] R ignores PATH_MAX and fails in long directories (PR#14228)
Full_Name: Murray Stokely
Version: 2.10.1
OS: Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (216.239.45.4)
The Defn.h header includes limits.h for PATH_MAX and then checks if it hasn't
been defined and if not sets something manually. Some of the R code uses
PATH_MAX but a lot of other functions in unix/sys-unix.c and main/startup.c just
hardcodes a limit of 256 characters.
In my environment this is not

Enhancement suggestion: improve the host not found error message
When I feed a bogus hostname to rsync, it reports "Undefined
error". It would be useful if instead it would say something more
informative, like "Host not found".
Thanks for rsync!

i386: vm.pmap kernel local race condition
Hi!
I've got FreeBSD 8.3-STABLE/i386 server that can be reliably panicked
using just 'squid -k rotatelog' command. It seems the system suffers
from the problem described here:
http://cxsecurity.com/issue/WLB-2010090156
I could not find any FreeBSD Security Advisory containing a fix.
My server has 4G physical RAM (about 3.2G available) and runs

7.2-PRERELEASE/sunx2200/bge/msi broken
Hi,
between March 16 and now, bge on a Sun X2200 stopped working,
turning off msi (via hw..pci.enable_msi=0) got it working again.
I tried first replacing bge with an older version but that did not help.
please advice :-)

freebsd-update and surces of 9.1-RC3
Hi!
I'm trying to use freebsd-update for first time.
I have 9.0-RELEASE installed without sources and I have read Handbook chapter
and manual page for freebsd-update.
"freebsd-update -r 9.1-RC3 upgrade" downloaded updates, its "install" command
installed kernel and after reboot second "install" invocation installed binaries
but not source tree that is needed to
