sysctl maxfiles
By default FreeBSD 7.0 shipped with the sysctls set to:
kern.maxfiles: 12328
kern.maxfilesperproc: 11095
We recently bumped up against these limits in an unfortunate way and
we are going to raise them. I have some questions:
* why are the numbers set the way they are? They aren't round numbers,
they aren't powers of 2. But they were arrived at somehow with
planning and thought

How do I increase the fd limit on OS X?
Hi All,
I just upgraded to the new 1.1rc5 from 1.0 that I had been using and it
advised me to increase the file descriptor limit. I'm not sure how to
do this. There is a command built into tcsh that allows me to do this
called limit, but sudo limit 4224 doesn't work, and usually dovecot is
started from the rc.local file if I recall right, and I'm not sure how
to set this up from

Kerberos5 / Heimdal
I have FreeBSD-6.1 and it appears the default installation has a full
complement of Kerberos5. But, /usr/src/kerberos5/README states:
This subtree is world-exportable, as it does not contain any
cryptographic code.
At the time of writing, it did not even contain source code, only
Makefiles and headers.
Please maintain this "exportable" status quo.
Thanks!

make buildworld ignoring NO_MAILWRAPPER=true
For the last few system builds, I've noticed that the variable in
/etc/make.conf NO_MAILWRAPPER=true is being ignored, resulting in my
sendmail (different than stock version) being overwritten.
This applies to 4.8-STABLE; is this a known issue.

Apple Mail and too many open files?
Hello,
For two days in a row, I've noticed that my dovecot server (hosted on
a PowerMac running OS X) has stopped working, with a bunch of error
messages in /var/log/mail.log like:
May 24 07:31:10 top dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files
To solve this, I have to kill -9 dovecot and the (many) imap
processes running.
The only client accessing the server is a machine running

OS X-centricities? Too many files, temp, indexes, etc...
I'm just writing to see if anyone else is seeing the following issues,
and particularly if they are running OS X (especially 10.4), and/or have
compatible solutions (I've been reading the mailing list quite a bit,
and every now and then, I find a solution that just "doesn't work"
because of the differences in OS:
1) Too many files open - no plimit command on OS X, so I

6.3-RELEASE-p3 recurring panics on multiple SM PDSMi+
We have 10 SuperMicro PDSMi+ 5015M-MTs that are panic'ing every few
days. This started shortly after upgrade from 6.2-RELEASE to
6.3-RELEASE with freebsd-update.
Other than switching to a debugging kernel, a little sysctl tuning,
and patching with freebsd-update, they are stock. The debugging
kernel was built from source that is also being patched with
freebsd-update.
These systems are

Dovecot "open files" (again?)
I'm a new dovecot user, just began using it last week. I switched from
courier because my research showed that Dovecot did indexes, and allows me
to store them anywhere I chose. I did this, and it fixed some severe disk IO
issues that my server had. (25k horde only webmail install using imap
proxy).
I'm using quotas, and by default had it set to 'dirsize'. my postfix is

I also keep on getting funny errors of dovecot EVEN THOUGH I
authenticated successfully through SMTP (Dovecto SASL) ?!?!
Just for debugging this entire issue I set those parameters:
debug_level = -1
auth_verbose = yes
auth_verbose_passwords = yes
auth_debug = yes
auth_debug_passwords = yes
mail_debug = yes
verbose_ssl = yes

I am running Samba 3.0.5 on OS X 10.3.8 Server. It's the stock Samba
supplied by Apple with no modifications. I am running a variety of
shares on the system to around 50 PC clients.
I came into the office this morning with a dead Xserve... could not
login, could not ping or ssh into the system. Users in the office
could not even browse the network. When they tried to browse the

Why would this be happening, and how can I fix this - the man subsystem

I did

I got no errors, but it doesn't seem to have installed everything I

"Too many open files" error
We have a Sun E450 running Solaris 8 and Samba 2.2.8a as our domain controller.
We have had no problems with Samba until earlier this week when we have started
to get lots of these errors in log.smbd:

Problems with dovecot 1.0rc5 + MySQL 5.0.24
Hi all,
I'm having an intermittent problem logging users in through a webmail
client (RoundCube). My maillog reports this:
auth(default): vmysql: sql error[3]: MySQL server has gone away
imap-login: Disconnected: user=<sales at coppersinkdepot.com>,

The MySQL server hasn't gone anywhere, I can log into it fine and

Sticky bit problem
Hi
We are building a Linux app under Centos 5.3, using gnu make 3.81 and gcc 4.12. The working directory is on a remote machine and is either a Samba share or a Windows 7 share. We find that in the case of a Windows 7 share the resulting executable has the sticky bit set in group:
On Windows 7 share:
-rwxrwSrwx 1 <snip> myapp
On Samba share:
-rwxrwx--x+ 1 <snip> myapp

Using Amazon S3 storage for Maildir ?
I wonder if anyone has tried using an IMAP server with Amazon S3 as a
backend. There would be many factors to consider (speed, etc).
However, moreso, I don't know that Maildir(++) would support multiple
folders that might be linked into the cloud. For example, higher-I/O
local incoming mail is on disk, some folders archived on S3. Could be
easily done by simply creating another

Rsync resource consumption, whilst building a large file list
I need to rsync a large collection of files (images) that number in the
1000's. We have 2 repositories, one was mass-copied recently, the other
has since had updates performed. The initial copy took over 5 hours to
complete ;-) What we want is only to update the destination (old) copy
with newer files, delete anything that shouldn't be there.
What I'm trying to determine is

New system build overwrites perl modules?
I've had a problem with 4.8-STABLE whereby a new system build/install
appears to nudge out the module File::Spec (perhaps others), which I
usually have to reinstall every time. I'm curious about what's happening
here, why, etc.
Thanks.
