Proliant 5000 hangs on boot to 5.1 during install
Hi, I have a Compuke Proliant 5000 I would really like to use FreeBSD on When I boot to CD or floppies using 5.1 I get all the way to: "/stand/sysinstall running as init on vty0" but the machine then locks up hard. When I boot to CD or floppies using 4.8 I get nothing. The machine won't boot to a 4.8 CD (that works in another machine) Any ideas on what to try next? TIA Rick

Proliant on a 6500
Sorry to reply to myself, but I wanted to expand this to -stable and add some more info... See the original post at the bottom of this msg. I just took the Smart 2/P and put it in slot1 (one of the shared Eisa/PCI slots.) Now the Dmesg output shows the "SMP: AP CPU" lines in a different order... They were: SMP: AP CPU# 3 Launched! SMP: AP CPU# 1 Launched! SMP: AP CPU# 2 Launched! now

Updating from 4.8 release to 4.8 stable
Hello, I am very new to FreeBSD and just installed 4.8 release. I want to upgrade this to stable. I have printed some of the pages out for makeworld and CVSUP, I am wondering what the best method for doing the updates are, downloading the individual packages and installing or using the CVSUP to do this? Currently I used mostly Red Hat Linux but have wanted to give this a try for some time

Installing FreeBSD-Stable and Upgrading to FreeBSD-Stable
I am a newbie trying to get the most current Stable version of FreeBSD running. I have been using CVS to update my system, but things don't work after an update. For example KDE 3.1 (from KDE 3.0) doesn't start using startkde. I am looking for instructions on the best way to Install the lastest version of FreeBSD-Stable and how to Upgrade the system in the future. Thanks.

I track stable via cvsup, sup'd on 4/29/03, and cvs up the system having problems, which is running FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/lib/libm.so.2: Undefined symbol "__stderrp" objdump -r /usr/lib/libm.so.2 show the symbol __stderrp. SMP goes away after installworld (4.8-STABLE)
Hello, I installed 4.8-RELEASE a few weeks ago, and since I let the effort sit stagnant for a while I decided to do the cvsup/buildworld/buildkernel/installkernel/installworld/mergemaster/MAKEDEV steps to get current. Went fine, rebooted, then noticed that just one CPU was recognized: FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE #0: Thu Jun 19 17:05:20 PDT 2003

-STABLE broken?
Hi. My bad, but I have not been tracking the -stable list and I just updated -stable on a production machine. It seemed to work just wonderful, as normal, for about 10 minutes then it started to deny connections and when you run commands, it would just hang. I have done a reboot and fsck everything. It is up now but things are still strange. Here's the output. I just updated -stable at

apache panics on a recent 4.8-STABLE
Yesterday I begin a couple of update to the latest 4.8-STABLE. After that the two boxes continues to go in panics as soon as Apache (1.3 from the ports, also freshly recompiled, 2.0.x seems NOT to hang) starts. I don't know if it is related to the other thread : "Kernel core dump in recent 4.8-STABLE" but it is easily reproducible by cvsupping to a today -STABLE and then running
