unexpected read size of 0 in map_ptr (Solaris 2.5.1)
Hi list,
Since upgrading rsync to version 2.5.2 on a Solaris 2.5.1 box,
I see plenty of
Warning: unexpected read size of 0 in map_ptr
when doing my nightly backup (rsyncing some directories
to an rsyncd on the same LAN). I have never seen this message
before, and I only see it on the Solaris machine (I upgraded
all my other machines to 2.5.2 as well).
I hope this is not a FAQ... I did not find

Solaris, socketpair and chroot
When using rsync 2.5.2 as daemon on a Solaris 2.5.1 box, I cannot
copy data to rsync volumes with option 'use chroot'; I get the
following messages on the client:
pipe failed in do_recv
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at main.c(375)
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (69 bytes read so far)
What seems to occur on the server is that socketpair(3)
(not pipe(2)) is called,

boot with dirty filesystem?
I have a small problem. I've had a machine go down and it came back
up with dirty filesystem on /var and /usr. fsck has solved the
problem with /var, after 10 times through. fsck seems unable to
resolve the inconsistencies with /usr however. fsck is running for
the 15th time right now. It looks to me like a probable bad sector on
the disk.
My question is there a way to force the machine

Correct. And indeed pxelinux.0 goes much further than lpxelinux.0!
I have a few issues yet to fix:

3.4p1: 'buffer_append_space: alloc 10506240 not supported'
I have been trying to install 3.4p1 on a number of machines.
Servers on ia64 Linux, i386 Linux and SPARC Solaris are all working
like charms. On the other hand, I am having trouble at least with
HPUX 11, DEC OSF 5.1 and Unixware: on all those systems, sshd bails
out after authentication with an error in buffer_append_space.
Here is the output of sshd -d on the UnixWare machine

Problems restoring from dump
Hello all,
First, the vital stats: FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, dovecot 1.0.rc7 from ports.
I have run into a vexing little problem that has brought my deployment
of a shiny new dovecot server to a screeching halt. Using 'periodic'
I've configured regular backups to occur using 'dump'. I have a monthly

hebrew characters
I'm trying to use rsync (version 2.6.9) to back up some files. However, a few
of them contain Hebrew characters. While I can back them up, the filenames
come through scrambled (I don't have Hebrew characters anymore). I've tried
the -8 switch, but that didn't work. Any suggestions?
Background:
The files are created on Windows and saved on a samba share (v3.0.24). I can

PAM fails to change user password
Hi, freebsd-security.
I have FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE.
When I try to change user's password (via passwd) I recieve the
following:
passwd: entry inconsistent
passwd: pam_chauthtok(): error in service module
passwd: in pam_sm_chauthtok(): pw_copy() failed
and password stays unchanged.
There are no other errors in the authorization system at all.
Contents of /etc/pam.d stayed unchanged (compared to

Further bug discovered with the Directshow decoder
Hi good people,
Just to inform:
I finally fed FFMpeg2Theora with a .VOB input, and the .OGV output produced played back beautifully in VLC, both audio and video. However, the same output .OGV file gave clicks and pops in the audio when fed through Directshow programs. I played it through Windows Mediaplayer as well as through Winamp, with the same crackles in the audio, and this leads me to

Script to strip chroot passwd file
Hello BSDers,
I'm running Apache in a chroot jail with suPHP. It needs an /etc/
passwd in the chroot so that suPHP can setuid to the owner of the PHP
script, but there's nothing that requires the passwords to be valid.
Does anyone have a script strips passwords out of master.passwd, sets
all shells to nologin, etc and writes it to the chroot etc dir? I've
looked around but

NA in logical vector = data frame row numbers scrambled
Dear all.
RE how to estimate parameters of multimodal distribution
Thank to prof.Ripley for pointing me to mclust package, although I am not sure I
can apply it to my problem.
I have another question.
I need to change some of my values in data frame to NA.
I use something like
df[df$v1 < 5, 5:10] <- NA
which is OK if there are no NA values in v1.
here are some foo attempts

CentOS as Development Laptop?
Hi,
Is CentOS good for a desktop machine?
I have been using Fedora but the whole GNOME 3 debacle has me
scrambling for something else. I have a few "minimal" CentOS servers
but does anyone here use CentOS on their laptop?
Does wireless and suspend work ok?
Are there packages for the usual desktop stuff like libreoffice,
sylpheed and so on?

copy/paste of large amount of code to terminal leads to scrambled/missing characters
Dear R-users,
This question might not be restricted to R, but I hope that some might have experienced similar problems and could help me.
When using R, I usually work with a text-editor (textmate2) in which I prepare the script.
To execute code, I then copy and paste it to an R-session running in the terminal/shell (on Mac OS).
Unfortunately, when pasting too much code into the terminal (e.g.
