4.8-RELEASE not identifying scsi drives
A problem with 4.8 reported by myself and Aaron D. Gifford.
Anyone in -stable who knows more?
********
I'm assembling a Compaq 1850R with attached storage system. For the
built in scsi controller (sym), there are three drives internally on
channel 1 + 5 drives externally on channel 2.
During boot, I can see all disks being identified first by the machine
itself and then in the early part

vinum (root on vinum too) throw_rude_remark crash: endless loop
Dear colleagues,
experimenting with vinum stripes and mirrors, I'd stuck myself with the
following:
panic: throw_rude_remark: called without config lock
(from vinumconfig.c:throw_rude_remark:103)
The system before this panic has two 160G drives with two vinum partitions on
each (one for mirrored root and one for the rest with swap between); these were
ad0 and ad2.
For the experiments,

This seems to be an old problem, but I haven't found much about it.
SuSE mentions "hwprobe=-pci" but, as far as I know, CentOS doesn't
use it.
This does stop the machine from booting (mounting /) quite a few
times.

Can't Get Lattice Histogram Minor Tick Marks to Work
I'm drawing a paneled histogram using the lattice package. I've succeeded in
adding minor tick marks to the vertical axis, but I can't get the desired
number of minor tick marks between the major tick marks.
I've attached a self-contained program to illustrate the problem.
Thanks for your help,
Don Macnaughton

Can't Get Lattice Histogram Minor Tick Marks to Work
Per the Posting Guide, why didn't you post the reproducible R code example?

How Can I Execute a String Expression?
I have the string ggstr that I've built with string manipulation:
ggstr = "ggplot(df1, aes(x,y)) + geom_smooth(se=FALSE, span=0.01)"
Assuming df1 is properly defined, this string will execute properly if I
submit it manually without the quotes. How can execute the command as a
string, so that I can run it repeatedly (with minor modifications) in a
loop? Presumably, it would be

Webgeb 0.5.x possible in Windows XP?
Hi Colin,
I think fcgi is only required for testing. I do without it and
directly open the output files in my browser. Maybe try saying no to
ramaze or whatever depends on fcgi?

Can't Get Lattice Histogram Minor Tick Marks to Work
Thanks Jeff,
I attached a file with the program to my earlier email because the posting guide seemed to imply that non-binary attachments would work. But I see that the file was stripped off.
I installed the program file on a web site, but when I downloaded it, the line breaks were stripped out. So I've included the program below:

Partial deadlock in 4.9p1
I've just had a 4.9p1 system partially deadlock for about 30 minutes
and then spontaneously(?) recover. The "ps" results point at vinum.
I've never seen this before and don't recall anything like this being
mentioned here before.
At the time, I had two find's running in a large NFS mounted
filesystem and was doing a "cvs -d /usr/ncvs -R checkout -P ports"

5.1-R-p2 crashes on SMP with AMI RAID and Intel 1000/Pro
Dear Sirs.
It seems to me a never ending story. We run a box with a TYAN Thunder
2500 Dual SMP mainboard, 2GB ECC Tyan certified memory, AMI Enterprise
1600 RAID adapter and additional Intel 1000/Pro server type (64 bit)
GBit LAN NIC. With FreeBSD 4.8 this was stable, but to achive this
state was really hard! It is a story similar to that what happend when
we changed towards FreeBSD

I'm trying to cross-compile 4.8-STABLE world to install
it over NFS later.
I have ./make.conf:

I run:

Direct access to SCSI cdrw
Hello,
I tried to install Yamaha cdrw at FreeBSD 5.1.
At 4.8 stable all was Ok.
Now I have in kernel configuration sym device.
But cdrecord shows message "No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver".
Maybe I must have /dev/sym0 device or something else?
If yes, then how to create it with help of devfs?
There are no much info in devfs's manual.

SCSI backup error
Hi,
Can someone please help me with this? I have just upgraded from 4.7 to 4.8-STABLE and
this is what I am getting when I try a tape backup. Please CC as I am not in the list. It was
working well before the upgrade (dump -0ua -f - / | gzip -c -9 | dd of=/dev/nsa0).
Thank you,
