Proliant on a 6500
Sorry to reply to myself, but I wanted to expand this to -stable and add
some more info...
See the original post at the bottom of this msg.
I just took the Smart 2/P and put it in slot1 (one of the shared Eisa/PCI
slots.)
Now the Dmesg output shows the "SMP: AP CPU" lines in a different order...
They were:
SMP: AP CPU# 3 Launched!
SMP: AP CPU# 1 Launched!
SMP: AP CPU# 2 Launched!

atheros chips dangerous?
Hello,
Possibly some of you will have read the news about "Hijacking a
Macbook in 60 Seconds or Less"[1]. At this time I was searching
a wireless card for my server and I wonder how this can affect
to the combination FreeBSD+ath(4).
The ath_hal page states that FreeBSD use a binary driver and
I think it is located in this file[2].
Unlike OpenBSD which affirms that they have

Integrity checking NANOBSD images
We have a number of Soekris devices that we will be deploying
remotely in semi- hostile physical environments. The remote links
are dialup so I dont have a lot of bandwidth available. I want to do
integrity checks of the images so that I can detect any tampering of
the flash image.
If I upload a static sha256 binary to /tmp on the remote box (which
is a RAM disk) and then do something

Drivers for FORE systems cards under FreeBSD
I had originally mentioned this only to 2 people, which was Jordan
K. Hubbard and Paul Henning-Kemp, but since I have received a lot of
queries on this, I thought I might as well post it on the FreeBSD announce
groups.
Included below is a posting done on the Linux-atm mailing group, by
Pragnesh Sampat. I have just adapted for FreeBSD.

Possible security issue with jails
Howdy!
I'm not sure if this is actually an issue, feature or a bug, but I have found
that inside a jail, the jailed root user is able to sniff traffic (and enable
promiscuous mode) on at least the interface of the IP address the jail is attached
to.
I have not found any documentation explaining if this should occur or not, but
I feel it is something that should at least be known to those

recommended SSL-friendly crypto accelerator
Hi,
I'm pondering building my own SSL accelerator out of a multi-CPU
FreeBSD system and a crypto accelerator.
What's the recommended hardware crypto accelerator card these
days?
Thanks,

[patch] Raw sockets in jails
Although RAW sockets can be used when specifying the source
address of packets (defeating one of the aspects of the jail)
some people may find it usefull to use utilities like ping(8)
or traceroute(8) from inside jails.
Enclosed is a patch I have written which gives you the option
of allowing prison-root to create raw sockets inside the prison,

I'm (as always) short of time, and GBDE is not the top priority
for me for the time being.
So I am more than happy to see people band together and improve
gbde.
The main work necessary is to polish the userland program and that

how to configure a FreeBSD firewall to pass IPSec?
I have a FreeBSD box acting as a firewall and NAT gateway
I would like to set it up to transparently pass IPSec packets -- I have
an IPSec VPN client running on another machine, connecting to a remote network.
Is there a way to do this? I can't find any hints in the man pages.

ACLs on Top level mailboxes.
Hello,
I?m in the process of migrating a mail server to new hardware. At the same time, I?ve made the decision to switch from courier to dovecot (v2.2.13) and from what I have seen so far I?m pretty happy.
I have two questions for the list.
I?d like my users mailboxes (Maildir format) to look like this:
Inbox
UserCreatedSubFolder1
UserCreatedSubFolder2

BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#?
Hello All.
I've just started looking into Xen and have a test environment in place. I'm seeing an
annoying problem that I thought worthy of a post.
Config:
I have 2 x HP DL585 servers each with 4 Dual core Opterons (non-vmx) and 16GB RAM
configured as Xen servers. These run CentOS 5.1 with the latest updates applied. These
system both attach to an iSCSI target which is an HP DL385

booting gbde-encrypted filesystem
Hello,
I think there was already a thread on this. I just
want to raise the question again if anyone has successfully
booted an gdbe-encrypted filesystem (everything encrypted except
the bootloader). The passphrase is entered at the bootloader prompt
or embedded in the bootloader.
I appreciate any tips.
Thanks,

NIC bonding on modern Proliants
Hello,
Does anyone have bonding working under CentOS on a modern Proliant?
What driver do you use?
My setup:
Centos x86_64 4.3 fully patched on a Proliant DL380 G4.
2 built-in NICs: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit
Ethernet (rev 10)
Using the tg3 driver that came with the OS.
I'm trying to set up bonding between the 2 built-in Broadcom NICs in
active-backup mode with each NIC

New entropy source proposal.
Hi.
I've been playing a bit with "use sound card as an entropy source" idea.
This simple program does what I wanted:
http://people.freebsd.org/~pjd/misc/sndrand.tbz
The program is very simple, it should be run with two arguments:
% sndtest /dev/dspW 1048576 > rand.data
This command will generate 1MB of random data.
With my sound card:
pcm0: <Intel ICH3 (82801CA)>

Recent 4.8-STABLE & Compaq Proliant System drive issues
Howdy all. We're experiencing some difficulties encountered from a new
build/install world/kernel on a Compaq Proliant machine we have.
We were running fine under 4.7-STABLE, and updated the sources to 4.8-STABLE
last night (5/8/03), built and installed. This morning after a reboot, we got a
horrid error to the likes of:
Error mounting root. Error no 22.
We encountered this error earlier
