Usability concern with overrides
I''ve been tinkering around with managing users and am concerned with the overall administrative usability of the inheritance overrides. For instance, the user games: redhat_base: user { games: ensure => present } local_site inherits redhat_base: User[games] { ensure => absent } This is fine, but imagine a few levels of nesting later with an admin that wants to ensure that a

File type attribute "type"
I''m having a bit of trouble understanding what to do with the ''type'' attribute of ''file''. I would like to perform different operations on directories vs. files under the same structure, can ''type'' be used for this? Are there any other examples of doing this kind of thing? Thanks, Trevor

Solaris SMF manifests and services in puppet
Anyone ever thought of making the service type in puppet able to deploy new services? I''m not sure this would be useful for all OSes, since package management systems generally install init scripts. Well it''d still be useful for Linux if you''re managing any customized services. For Solaris, it''d be great if I could just give puppet an SMF XML file, and say

Problem implementing multiple Environments
I am trying out having multiple environments so that I can push a test config to a single server in production. The idea being that I could push out a config change to one server and see if the change works in production. If it does then I can merge the change into the production environment and push the change out to all the clients. So to test this I made a change to a config file in testing

isc-dhcp dynamic update problem
Hi, I have a buster system configured as a DC running 4.11.13 from Louis's repo. I am trying to get https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_DHCP_to_update_DNS_records_with_BIND9 working. Mostly it seems to work but there seems to be a problem with what dhcpd writes into the leases file in the "on release" stanza. When dhcpd writes the On Release stanza I get something like the

getaddrinfo() problem with AIX 4.3.3 and rsync 2.5.2?
I had to apply the following patch to the clientname.c check_name() function before I could successfully use "hosts allow" in rsyncd.conf. Without the patch I kept getting "rsync: forward name lookup for ... failed: Host not found" errors. These errors were produced by the rsync daemon, and putting in a debugging statement revealed that the port_buf being used had a large

Definition specialization
There was a discussion a while ago about adding inheritance to definitions. There is a need for a way to specialize parameters while allowing passing other options. This comes up with remotefile where it would be nice to have a default server location but not specify all the parameters (and their defaults) in the definition. Was there a change to the syntax? Is there a way to accomplish this?

same changes in the DHCP to DNS script
I am "playing" around with the DNS update script from the Wiki (https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_DHCP_to_update_DNS_records_with_BIND9) and made a "few" changes, which I think could be important. 1. the script dhcp-dyndns.sh should give back the control to dhcpd as soon as possible; therefore I am using a second bash-script (dyndns.sh) to fork of the main script

Hello everyone, I have configured my Samba as AD with BIND9_DLZ as backend and trying to configure the ISC-DHCP-server to add the leases to BIND_DLZ As described in the samba wiki: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_DHCP_to_update_DNS_records_with_B IND9 Everything is working fine so far, but I get an error message as shown below in syslog: Aug 13 14:32:28 SAMBA dhcpd[4635]:

Hi: I''m trying to configure Puppet on Ubuntu, and strangely I am never able to generate a certificate because my server never shows any pending certificate requests. Netbios over VPN
I am attempting to utilize BackupPC on a Fedora 14 server to backup a remote client. As I understand, it's primary mechanism for finding clients is performing a nmblookup <clientname> This works fine for computers connected to the local network. My issue is extending ?Samba's? search to encompass our other network - the point-to-point VPNs Using OpenVPN, we have a number of road

Type development for the rest of us
Since I had my type development epiphany a couple of days ago, I''ve decided to write down my understanding of developing simple types, at http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PracticalTypes. I''d appreciate comments from people who already know how to develop types as to correctness, and also comments from people who are new to type development about whether it''s a
