Rewritten Language Tutorial
The language docs have been languishing for ages, so out of disgust I
consolidated the LanguageStructures and LanguageTutorial pages into a
new, rewritten LanguageTutorial[1] page. Let''s consider this page
the single page for all language explanation, and let''s do what we
can to enhance and correct this page over time. I think the
existence of two pages confused

Can i manage part of a file ..
Can I use puppet to ensure that a file includes certain text but not be
required to maintain the entire file?
For example,
I would like /etc/modprobe.conf to contain the following lines but the
file will also contain lines that are system dependent.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Disable IPV6
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

"All resource specifications require names": wot?
Hi, everyone --
I downloaded puppet and have been playing with it. I''m using the RPM''s for RHE4 created by David (mentioned on the install page: http://people.redhat.com/dlutter/yum/rhel4/) with RHE''s ruby 1.8.1-7:
ruby-1.8.1-7.EL4.8
ruby-libs-1.8.1-7.EL4.8
ruby-devel-1.8.1-7.EL4.8
I''m sure this is an easy one; all the same, I''m stumped. Please

Modules Search and Puppet
Hi,
I''m not using puppet in a standard way (ie. in a server/client
configuration), just the standalone ''puppet --use-nodes'' command.
I''m having problems with the directory structure of modules and using the
import feature.
My directory infrastructure looks like this:
/srv/puppet/facter/...
/srv/puppet/manifests/site.pp
/srv/puppet/manifests/libs/file.pp

Facts load by puppet -factsync question
fact loads:
I use facter to search the rsync path and then i write this sudoers line:
Cmnd_Alias BACKUPCOMMANDS = /usr/bin/rsync
I call puppet like this:
puppetd --factsync --server=xxx.yyy.61.131 --waitforcert 60 --test
the recipe is:
sudoensure_line { sudobackupcommands:
ligne => "Cmnd_Alias BACKUPCOMMANDS =
$rsyncpath",

file type not autorequiring parent directories.
If I use the ''file'' type to sync a file where the parent directory
doesn''t exist the sync fails. According to the puppet docs "Puppet will
autorequire any parent directories that are being managed". Am i
missing something?
Example:
file { "/tmp/dhcp/dhcpd.include":
source => "/tmp/dhcpd.include",

Hi,
I wanted to know whats the ideal way to install puppet client
ie the below packages on Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike) system --

Thank you puppet!!
I''ve been hacking at puppet for the past week or two, and came up with
some great stuff, but I''m wondering if there''s a way to tie it all
together
To create a virtual machine for our company''s QA environment, I''m
currently doing 3 things:
#create a vm
node vmsvr2 inherits default {
include vmserver
vmserver::vm {

Mac OS X pkgs up.
So I''ve done some Mac OS X pkgs for the latest Facter and Puppet, as well as
a combined mpkg for them both.
Jeff McCune and I are doing a fair bit of testing on them this week in
preparation for MacWorld, so I wasn''t going to upload them to the official
site for another few days, but they''re looking pretty good.

relative path cmd line option
I''m having a hard time shipping off complete puppet manifests/facts/files
within a single versioned container to end nodes because of how strict
puppet is about not allowing relative paths, even with runtime command line
options. (I can not use the puppet/puppetmaster client/server model because
of company policies, organization divisions and personnel issues.)
When I export a complete

0.20.0 and Schedules...
Hey thanks for the new version, but I seem to be having some troubles.
I have a number of schedules defined in my configuration, something like:
schedule { once_a_day:
period => daily,
repeat => 1,
}
Using 0.20.0 of the server I get:
err: Could not retrieve configuration: Duplicate definition:
schedule[once_a_day] is already defined in file

Modules, namespaces and variables
Hi there,
After quite a long time out of puppet business I''m back, and the first thing
I''m doing is rephrasing my puppet manifests using modules. I started with
the NTP module (a classic, I guess). I have (more or less) the following:
In modules/ntp/manifests/init.pp:
$ntp_localtime = "/usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Madrid"
class ntp {
... some stuff using the

Reusing definitions - need to pass variable in the title
I recently tidied up a class/definition combo that sets /etc/issue and
/etc/issue.net. This failed:

group => root,
mode => 0644,
content => template("issue_conf")
}
}

path => "/etc/issue"
}

multiple files with same attributes
I''m almost afraid to ask because this probably sticks out
like a sore thumb on the wiki somewhere, and I''m just not
seeing it.
But I have a bunch of files with the same owner/mode. Is
there a way to somehow collapse these, so that all I repeat
is the file name?
Example:
file {
"/opt/test/1":
owner => "jtan",

Downloading a file into a directory that does not exist
Hello again, all:

Host groups config in puppet & User Management.
Hi,
I have installed Puppet puppet-0.23.2-1.el4 &
puppet-server-0.23.2-1.el4.
Now trying to configure. I have a basic config which changes the sudo
permission of the file.
Currently I am using the puppet server as client. Now I wanted to add
all my hosts some linux some unix. So was looking for a config syntax
whioh can create groups.
Like IT = [ host-1, host2, shost3 ]

before everything
I have some facter file to distribute before running puppet on the platform.
The problem is :
how can i send the facter local.rb file so the rest of the .pp file take
into account the new facts created ?
ex: i have sudopath as a facter fact and one sudoers class that need
that sudopath to work. How do you model that ?
it seems puppet would have to rerun after the new local.rb is downloaded

puppet definition
Hello,
still upgrading to .20.1 and i have another issue that puppet does
not regonize anymore my definitions, i use some ensure lines definition
in a function.pp file and since then i am unable to make it work.
puppetmasterd tells me this:
Unknown function sudoensure_line in file
/etc/puppet/manifests/./classes/backup.pp
the import of the function is my 2 line of the site.pp and i
